The Trials of Shazam

BNW was split up among 6 stories, highlighting new minis that DC has coming out. All those stories were separate. Trials of Shazam was about 12 pages.

BNW gave us a glimpse of what happened to Billy before Trials #1. During Infinite Crisis, Shazam was killed and Billy stepped up to take his place as basically the chief conduit for magic in the DC universe. He was bound to the Rock of Eternity, so he had to stay up there a lot. The other Marvels were unaffected, though. In BNW, that changed. Billy's transformations started drawing more of the Marvels' power, until eventually there wasn't enough to spare for the other Marvels. That's why CM Jr. and Mary lost their powers and Billy grew that patch of white hair. Now, in Trials #1,
Billy's drawn basically all of the Marvels' power, turning him into an "acolyte of the Wizard," which made his hair and costume totally white and, for all of Winick's protesting that he's not the "new" Shazam, basically makes him fill the exact same role as Shazam did.
That was all in an interview Winick gave to Newsarama recently.

I thought the first issue was good. Better than I thought it would be based on the BNW preview, in fact. I'm looking forward to the other changes the Marvel family goes through. I'm also hoping Winick doesn't entirely neglect the human aspect of everything that's happening. Billy is, after all, still a teenager who's basically been ripped from his home by circumstance. Presumably someone, somewhere would care about that.

No problem. I thought that was actually why this thread started in the first place. I was surprised no one else had posted it yet.

See, when I read this and 52 at the same time, I'm like "Wow, what the **** is going on, I thought most of them lost their powers".

****ing 52.

Right I just read Trials of shazam #1 and I don't understand what happened to Billy at the end? Why didn't it work properly when he said 'Shazam?'

well i guess from issue 18 of 52 that by someone(a suitable person) finding fate's helmet the 10th age of magic would start but since it did'nt, the realms of magic is still f'ed up. and since the marvel family mythos revolves around magic thier powers don't work properly or in the case of freddie and mary it does'nt.

anyone has a better guess?

I am just shocked to see what has happened to Billy, he's just a kid for god's sake. What is this transformation going to do to his life.

well im not that deeply educated in captain marvel's mythology, but did'nt he start as an orpan and remianed that way until he found a home? he really did'nt have life anyway, ya know. so im pretty sure it won't bother him too much and he's i think he's a teenager right now, probably 16.

and him transforming into an old captain marvel with a white and gold costume looked awesome.

He's 15 i think it was mentioned in the issue, so yeah I guess it wont be too traumatising, god damnit i just want toi know whats going on. Guess we all have to wait for #2.

I wouldnt' be surprised if they made Billy the new wizard. I cant' say I was a fan of the way he looked in all white though.

I think its more to the point that Billy cant be both the Shazam's replacement and Captain marvel. It seems to me, hes now Shazam and therefore thats why Freddy will have to step up and take the Captain Marvel mantle.

billy is the new wizard. thats why he lives in the rock of eternity. read 52 and days of vengeance.

yup, but i really, really, hope that if an ongoing spins out of this it'll be about billy not freddie, he's cool and all. but billy needs his turn in the spot light.

I doubt it will turn into an ongoing anytime soon. And it will be Freddy most likely if they do.

I liked this, mostly the art, I mean giant frikken titans with artworks that looks like paintings. What's not to love? The story looks interesting to, I never really liked Superman but CM always seemed interesting.

That theory relies on the point that there's still no new Dr. Fate by the time OYL rolls around. That seems unlikely given that Trials of Shazam is set in present, OYL continuity, and a certain someone has apparently just started his journey to becoming Dr. Fate way back in week 18 of the preceding year.

Still, it's a moot point. Winick explained what happened to Billy: he'd been drawing on more of the Marvels' power ever since Shazam died and he was bonded to the Rock of Eternity. I guess the Rock recognized him as its new Wizard-guy, and the Wizard can access all of the power, so it started feeding him more. Eventually, it got to the point where Billy drew so much that there wasn't enough left over to support Freddy and Mary's transformations--which is what we saw in BNW. At the end of Trials #1, the Rock finally slaps Billy with all of the power, transforming him from Captain Marvel, the Wizard's champion, into his current form as the Wizard's replacement. Why that means he has to have white hair and clothes is beyond me, though.

I prefer to go with a wait and see approach. We'll find out just what's going on eventually. Either way, this first ish was great. Especially the artwork.

Dude, I got my comics from last week, yesterday. I read freakin Planetary. There isn't a word fit to describe my patience. Job aint got s**t on me.
