The Ugly Americans

What do people overseas really think of Americans?

I'm curious about how people feel about us,particularly on this board. Do we fit into the stereotype? Have your experiences on this board changed your opinion? Are you guys ever offended when American shows poke fun at you and your culture?

Let it be known.

I can tell you know that a decent number of Europeans are either angry with Americans,or feel sorry for them. Those who feel angry,is that they see the USA as doing whatever they want, and when a country says to stop. The USA doesnt,it only stops when Europe as a whole says to stop.:marv:

We do feel sorry, for those who have seen what Bush has done to the country.Yes,some make fun of it,but most are sad,and its pity.Like how the Americans are too lazy to get Bush out of office,or they dont know the truth.

Yes,The Ugly Americans............reek.

Lazy... right.

Well, maybe if Europe wasn't so lazy, they could stop Bush.

seriously, I know that most of the folks on here are joking about the center of the universe stuff and all that, but if you were an outsider, you'd pry be like, "f**k you!! can you be any more full of yourself!?"

The US was founded on land that was stolen from another people, and prospered by bringing stolen people to cultivate the stolen land

The US's main goal as a country is to 'make a quick buck', capitalize . . . it's a flawed system, and eventually I think will crumble like all great empires before it . . .

Our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts.

I think the problem is that the US is behind the curve. Up until WWI and II, every country was completely full of themselves. They were wantonly attacking other countries, trating prisoners poorly, taking advantage of others, the works. Excessive nationalism was also rampant. Then, after WWII, that was given up.
The US acts like that now. Its a reminder and harkening back to an era many people in Europe, especially the younger generation, is not proud of.

However:
As far as the US being based on stolen land, slavery, and the like, EVERY country did that. There is not one nation today that was always living on their own land in peace, working honest labor themselves. This is true everywhere. If it is the US's past that they hate us for, that's very hypocritical of them.

And besides, every system is flawed. No system is ever going to last forever. Some may last longer than others, but its not as if any other people is going to fare better.

Your right man, your right it's just that everytime I turn around (I've been all over the world) it seems other countries got a problem with us. It's like damn did they want Hitler to win?
You know I respect you, but that damn war was 60 years ago. I'm not diminishing what the Americans did for Europe in that war (even though I still think the Canadians and Russians should get a lot more respect than they have had), but let it go already. What I think bothers some Europeans is some of the "you're indebted to us" attitude that some Americans will hold, something that is horribly ridicilious. We layed the ground for America and you pulled our asses out of the fire. There's no debt.

Then there's the foreign policy that America currently employs. No matter how much Americans try to prevent it, your political system and policy do reflect on you, and we'll be quick to generalize you in that area. Again, the regime's "you're either with us or against us" hasn't really brought any sympathy either.

What most Europeans will see Americans as? Obese blowhards that should stick to their own business.

I think that one of the few great things in England is still the fact that most anybody can get into a position of power, America seems from the outsidre to be a place where only those with money get into power. Anyone can become an MP in england, you can contest anyseat against the other parties, For instance when my local football team were refused the right to rebuld their ground, they started the Valley Party and challened the decison in the polls. It worked an it now one of the nicest places to go in the premiership.

ALso i think americans rarely seem to look outside their own walls. For instance, the top ten greatest athletes in the world thread on the hype. It took 3 pages or more to actually mention someone who wasnt form the american continent. I think they should be a little more world aware for want of a better term.

I also agree that the war thing is way overdone. Americans forget that if the european countries like Britain and Russia hadnt held on for as long as they did, or hadnt kept fighting as much as they could, or hadn't endured the blitz that devastated their capital cities, hitler wouldve been on their doorstep before long.

Now 911 is another issue, It was a horrendus tragedy, completely unnacceptable in the civilised world. But some americans i've had conversations with make out that its the first instance of terrorism to ever occur, and although it was awful, they forget that us in europe have been dealing with this stuff for a good while longer then them. Spain has etta, and Britain has been plagued with IRA bombs and killings since beginning of the last century. Tell the parents who lost children in Omagh that there wasnt terrorism before 911. Sometimes America seems like a spoilt child, who when they dont get their way stamp their feet, throw tantrums and generally act up until they get what they want.

Sorry, rant over, let the flames begin.

"I want to say this. I want to say it gently but I want to say it firmly: There is a tendency for the world to say to America, "the big problems of the world are yours, you go and sort them out," and then to worry when America wants to sort them out." - Tony Blair

Canada needs to remember who keeps their asses from being a 3rd world nation.

Out of all the countries in the world your lucky enough to be right next to us for protection.

LOL, their economy? and protection from who?:o

Eh, I don't see why so people have so much pride in their country.

To me, it's only a lump of dirt I had no choice in being born on.

I don't hate Americans in any way, shape or form. I mean I have alot of family living down there, I certinally don't hate them. And i'm never offended if Americans poke fun at the culture either, I really couldn't give a ****. Every country has their hangups. Look, this is my opinion;

I'm happy with where I am, i'm happy with where my life is going. I like my job, and everything is going good. I don't care about what's going on with the rest of the world, or whether or not they think my country likes them or not, i'm concerned with them.

Now i've visisted the United States plenty of times, I enjoyed my stay. But i'd rather live here where I have my life, my friends etc.

I'm just waiting for some foreigner to say something like "hey ugly American, I fart in your general direction!". So I can lay da smackdown on dey candyass!

Good evening, ye who are disgraced in looks, citizens of the United States of America, I would like you to know that the vertex of the flatulance that are currently within me will be thrown out pointed relativly to your location or maybe slightly out of path by a few degrees.

Well for the most part we're oblivious to things like the events you mentioned. 9/11(or 11/9 for you:p) was especially significant because of the great loss of life, and the fact that no one saw it coming. As its been stated earlier in this thread, we Americans are led to believe that this is the greatest country in the world, and as such we can win any war,and are completely untouchable. I may be wrong about this, but the last terrorist threat we had to worry about came from within.

It doesn't count when it's homegrown. When it's a middle eastern/asian type, we're ready to go to arms.
