The Untouchables:Capone Rising-*UPDATED Nic Cage to play Capone

The Black Dahlia was pretty awful. The last DePalma filme I liked was Mission Impossible. He seems like he is going the Wes Craven route and just completely sucking these days.

This is either gonna be really great or total crap, there's rarely a middle ground with Depalma, for now I'll stay optimistic since i loved the Untouchables and i like Cage as Capone

I like what I read so far; this should be a good film. A must see for me at least. I liked The Untouchables and I hope this upcoming film will be better. It's good that Cage is gonna play Capone.

I hate this idea, and wtf with Cage?!? Every his movie is anpther s***!!! I haven't seen anything good after such great movies as Adaptation and Matchstick Men :(

WTF! Shouldn't Capone be....uh...YOUNG? Nic Cage is one year younger than Deniro was when he played the role in '87. Terrible casting decision. I loved The Untouchables, but the Black Dahlia should have been a return to form for De Palma and it was far from it. I've lost all faith in the man, and this project never was a good idea to begin with.

DePalma's been losing it lately. if this was the same DePalma that did Scarface, Untouchables, and Carlito's Way then i would be thrilled with the news of Nicholas Cage as Capone....but this is the DePalma of Mission to Mars, Femme Fatale, and Black Dahlia.

Nicholas Cage as Capone would be interesting if Cage puts in a genuine effort to NOT act like Nicholas Cage but that doesn't seem likely.....especially under the direction of DePalma.

Agreed.

Al was an engaging guy and it will be interesting to see a movie about his origins, but there's no reason to connect it with the Untouchables movie.

yes there is...it's $$$. i'm not saying it's a good reason but it's a reason none-the-less.

Butler In Capone Rising
Date: May 17, 2007

Gerald Butler will topline in the Brian De Palma "Untouchables" prequel called "Capone Rising" -- and indeed the actor put in a 60-second appearance to say how "unbelievable" the script was, reports Variety.

Butler will join Nicolas Cage who will portray a young Al Capone in the prequel.

Directed by Brian DePalma, the flick is a prequel to his 1987 classic “The Untouchables”, and revolves around the early dealings of the infamous gangster with Jimmy Malone - the Irish cop role that won Sean Connery an Oscar.

Good bit of casting IMO

Isnt cage the same age as deniro in TU? Why didnt they go with someone younger?

From Sparta to Chicago

Twenty years after The Untouchables first hit theaters with Kevin Costner starring as Eliot Ness, Robert De Niro as Al Capone, and Sean Connery is his Oscar winning performance as beat cop Jim Malone, director Brian De Palma is going back to the well with his upcoming prequel The Untouchables: Capone Rising.

Joining De Palma is the biggest name in action films at this moment. Gerard Butler, fresh off his career-making role in 300, has joined Capone Rising playing a younger Jim Malone. “(I play) the young Sean Connery, when he was still a detective,” said Butler. “It’s great, the script is phenomenal.” Several names are attached to the screenplay including Brian Koppelman who put his pen to the upcoming crime caper Ocean's Thirteen.

Butler is looking forward to his new role being more of an homage than a direct retread of his fellow Scot's performance. "Being Scottish and being tall, I’m gonna come across a little bit like Sean Connery and people will make those comparisons, but I’m going to do my own thing (in the role).”

Butler continues, "I think this character (has even) more (great lines) in him (than before), because this was a point where he was more a wheeler and dealer. He has to deal with things coming for him, he has to deal with his own morality. In this story there’s so much going on with this guy that you really see a lot of different sides to his character.”

i was just reading an interview Butler did with MTV.

it really does look like he's getting popular. if this film lives up to its potential Butler will be the new "mr hot thing". although i congratulate him on his success it seems like its now impossible for him to commit to long in development cult movies like The Watchmen.

No Untouchables for Nicolas Cage
Source: Variety
May 25, 2007

If Brian De Palma moves ahead with prequel The Untouchables: Capone Rising, it will be sans Nicolas Cage, reports Variety.

Cage had been in negotiations to star in the follow-up, but talks have ended because of scheduling issues, according to his representatives.

Relativity Media is financing the film, while Paramount has domestic distribution rights. Art Linson, who produced De Palma's 1987 pic The Untouchables, is producing the prequel as well.

It was announced last week that Gerard Butler has joined the cast as Jimmy Malone, played by Sean Connery in the original. Cage would have played the young Al Capone.

aww nutz. i was looking forward to Cage's version of Capone.

Yeah... just drop The Untouchables name.

I completely agree, they should simply call it "The Rise of Al Capone" that way it wouldn't have to be compared to the 1987 film. It would also give more freedom to the director in terms of the kind of story he wants to tell. I would be interested in seeing what Andrew Dominik could do with the story of Al Capone.

I just found out a bout the film and used the search function. I was toying with starting a thread about it beforehand.

DePalma, Lucas, Coppla, have all become hacks. The only good ones left from the 70s Film movement is Spielberg and Scorsese.

Bring back Sean Connery & Robert De Niro if they not back then don't bother making this prequel.

So is this film getting made or...
