Experts caution against VR dangers

April 10, 2017 37 comments

With virtual reality headsets becoming widespread and the gaming industry jumping on board the movement, could there be a dark side to this rapid adaptation? That’s the concern of some of University of Southern California’s researchers, who spoke at a lecture to present some of the unintended consequences of widespread VR penetration.

The researchers are calling for government scrutiny of VR to prevent abuse and gaslighting: “We haven’t mastered the idea of how we maintain boundaries within virtual and digital and now we’re going to start connecting all of these other systems. So maybe it’s time to start thinking a little bit more deeply.”

With that said, there actually is a VR MMORPG in development. Yoshinori Yamagishi, who formerly produced Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile, is working on a new title called Monobit VR. You can take a glimpse of this title after the break.

Throw your own Kamehameha!

Virtual reality is really making the rounds with popular franchises. Most notably, the Batman: Arkham VR title for PlayStation 4. But now, Dragon Ball Z has made its way to the VR scene with BotsNew Characters VR Dragon Ball Z.

Who hasn't tried to throw their own Kamehameha? Come on, it's okay to admit it, we all have. Well now, it's possible with virtual reality. The video below only shows some scripted scenes, so the specifics aren't readily apparent, but a quick look around the world and it looks like it's straight off of Akira Toriyama's drawing board.

What virtual reality immersion researchers are up to will ‘shock’ you – literally

April 18, 2017 18 comments

OK, virtual reality fans and frenemies, here’s a fun thought process: How do you simulate haptic feedback when your arms are waving around in the air? When you pretend to grab a mug of coffee, pick up a ball, or clock someone in the jaw, how does the game world sell immersion to you?

One answer might be electric muscle stimulation — yep, they’re gonna shock you. Researchers at the Hasso-Plattner Institute in Germany are apparently trying to mimic the muscle response and feel of touching, pushing, or lifting items in virtual reality with micro-shocks in actual reality.

It’s not really as “shocking” as it sounds, as anyone’s who’s ever experienced this sort of thing in its existing form as muscle therapy can attest (I can, and it actually worked, I’m still surprised to say). At its worst, it sort of feels like weird tingling or zingy pressure, not pain. It’s a cheap process, but it’s also goofy as heck, and if you were annoyed at having to plop on a giant headset for virtual reality, just wait until you have to tape a bunch of electrical nodes up and down your arms.

Apparently he thinks VR won't be powerful enough.

Roughly a year ago, Take-Two Chairman & CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed his doubts about VR and the market it has opened. He discussed this at the 44th Cowen and Company Annual Technology, Media & Telecon Conference. Yesterday, he echoed this mindset in the same halls.
He still isn't keen on the idea as a whole but remains open to it. He does, however, think it has other applications outside of entertainment.
"It’s developing exactly as I expected [laughing]. Look, so far there’s not a significant entertainment market for VR software, I think that’s a factual statement. We have put out some VR games, sold some units, we put out the NBA2K VR experience. If VR develops as a meaningful entertainment platform, we’ll be there with our IPs and our teams would be really excited to do very cool developments.
To be clear, there’s no shortage of passion to do something about it. I do think there are limitations. I do believe VR is a very powerful technology for medical and military uses; I am not convinced yet it will be a powerful technology for entertainment uses."
Virtual reality is progressing slower than many invested in the movement expected because as Zelnick predicted, there are still too many limitations in VR.
In the same conference, Zelnick also talked about his stance on the Nintendo Switch and its application.
"We’re there front and center, we have NBA 2K coming for the Switch. We consider ourselves to be in a very important partnership with Nintendo. We believe in it, it’s been a very successful launch. It remains to be seen how it does [going forward], but we’re excited about it and assuming there’s an install base, we’ll be there. Not with all of our titles, but selectively."
The full discussion can be found here. At the same conference, Zelnick also expressed his thoughts on microtransactions, stating that Take-Two could do more but won't be out to "Grab the last nickel."

We may be waiting longer than we thought for VR on Xbox.

PlayStation 4 fans have their own custom virtual reality experience in the form of the PlayStation VR. Xbox One fans, however, don’t have any kind of VR console exclusive—and according to Microsoft, that’s not likely to change.
According to a recent statement given to Polygon, Microsoft is turning all of its VR-related development to its PC market.
“Our primary focus is making our mixed reality experiences a success on Windows 10 PCs,” Microsoft technical fellow Alex Kipman said. “We believe that right now a Windows PC is the best platform for mixed reality as its open ecosystem and enormous installed base offer the best opportunity for developers, and Windows offers the most choices for consumers.
“Windows has been the birthplace of a variety of technologies, and we believe this will hold for mixed reality too. Given the efforts we have underway on Windows for mixed reality, and our belief that console VR should be wireless, right now we are focused on developing mixed reality experiences for the PC, not on the console.”
Originally, Microsoft had “hi-fidelity VR” on the list of features for its upcoming Project Scorpio, but quietly removed that line from its product description. At the time, though, Microsoft stated that the Scorpio would continue to support VR features. What this likely means is that the Scorpio will be powerful enough to support various VR devices (especially when the quoted “wireless” technology finally emerges), but won’t have a dedicated headset in the way that the PlayStation 4 has the PSVR. Not yet, anyway.
Microsoft has confirmed that VR will not be a part of its E3 2017 press conference next week.

Rather they get it right the first time any way.

It appears as though Microsoft will be holding off of revealing a virtual reality headset for their consoles at E3 2017 this year. While Microsoft is indeed working on VR, they are focusing on getting it right on PC first before they get it on the console.
In addition to that, Microsoft believes that console VR should be a 'wireless' experience, not a wired one. So, the developers will focus on getting the technology right before they put it on the Xbox One or Project Scorpio.
"Our primary focus is making our mixed reality experiences a success on Windows 10 PCs,” said Alex Kipman, technical fellow at Microsoft, to Polygon. “We believe that right now a Windows PC is the best platform for mixed reality as its open ecosystem and enormous installed base offer the best opportunity for developers, and Windows offers the most choices for consumers.

Given the efforts we have underway on Windows for mixed reality, and our belief that console VR should be wireless, right now we are focused on developing mixed reality experiences for the PC, not on the console.”

This means that we shouldn't expect Xbox VR to be at E3 or in stores alongside Project Scorpio. At least we know we will be seeing Project Scorpio there.

Spider-Man: Homecoming VR Experience Drops June 30, Trailer Released

[YT]XMb8lXuIio0[/YT]

In two weeks, we'll get to feel what it's like to become Spider-Man, when Spider-Man: Homecoming VR drops on all major VR platforms. Sony Pictures' VR division has produced an intense VR experience leading up to the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming in theaters on July 7. Check out the announcement trailer above.
According to the press release, in this VR experience we'll learn the ins and outs of the fancy new Spider-Man suit provided by Tony Stark and Stark Industries. We'll have to master various types of web shots in order to complete fast-paced targeting trials. From the look of the trailer, and from the sound of the press release, this VR experience will be more focused on web-slinging than web-swinging. Taking prolonged drops, hurdling toward the city streets and swinging from building to building in VR sounds like it could definitely cost us our lunch, so this might be a little more appropriate.
The announcement also states that we'll be aiming to take down Vulture, so expect a flashy "boss fight" as well. I think you may actually get a quick glimpse of that final showdown toward the very end of the trailer.
“Spider-Man is the most beloved superhero in the world, so we knew Spider-Man: Homecoming VR had to be something special. Fans can wear the suit, fire the new web shooters – THWIP! – and swing through the air in a faceoff with The Vulture,” said Jake Zim, Senior Vice President, Virtual Reality at Sony Pictures in a statement. “It’s every fan’s fantasy turned into virtual reality.”
Spider-Man: Homecoming VR will be releasing on June 30 for pretty much every major VR platform, including PlayStation VR, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift. If you don't own any of those headsets, don't worry. You'll get your chance to try it out at select Cinemark Theaters across the country.
Just don't forget to mind your surroundings. In your web-slinging frenzy you don't want to accidentally web-slug someone in the face.

Yeah, the graphics aren't amazing but it's free and is something that'll tide you over until the movie is out on July 7th! You can download the VR experience on June 30th. It isn't clear how long it'll be but given the fact it's just an "experience" and is free, it'll probably be 15 - 30 minutes long.

Now we just need some cables and someone to build an obstacle course like this.

If you've ever wanted to pretend that you were Mario in Super Mario Bros., you're in luck. You can live vicariously through Abhishek Singh, a man who built a level from Super Mario Bros. in Unity3D and played it in Central Park dressed up as Mario.
The video is said to use absolutely no post-production, which means that what you see is what you get - all of this was playable in the Microsoft Hololens.

[YT]QN95nNDtxjo[/YT]
Of course, there are limitations with augmented reality games. Abhishek has to walk around most structures seeing as he can't physically jump that high and he wouldn't actually be landing on anything if he did.
