EP Daily Rundown for November 17, 2016

Today in the Rundown, we have exclusive new intel on Ghost Recon Wildlands from Ubisoft Paris! We also get the latest on the JRPG Persona 5, find out how Google Earth is taking users into virtual reality, go ape with Kong: Skull Island, try to escapeThe Legend of Zelda in real life, and finally, get a little less serious with the next chapter in Telltale’s Batman game!

Google is bringing the whole wide world into virtual reality. The tech giant has released Google Earth VR, which, as you might have guessed from the title, is a virtual reality version of Google Earth. Users can strap on a headset and explore anywhere on the planet, with full 3D renderings available for most major cities. The detail level will vary depending on where you are, so don’t expect places to look as good as they would if you were actually standing there. Google Earth VR available right now for the HTC Vive headset, and will come to other headsets, including Google’s own Daydream View, in the not too distant future.

Pokémon Movie Catches a Director – The Rundown

Today in the Rundown, we catch the latest news on the live-action Pokémon movie, have some good news for fans of virtual reality multiplayer, find out how the Assassin's Creed franchise is entering the world of VR, have some eye-popping news about The Walking Dead, get even gorier with a look at the new movie The Belko Experiment, and finally, intercept the latest intel on the future of the Battlefield and Battlefront franchises!

Ubisoft wants to bring all the VR players of the world together. With their new VR games Eagle Flight, Werewolves Within, and Star Trek: Bridge Crew being built for multiple VR headsets, Ubisoft has revealed that all three games will support cross-platform multiplayer. Starting now, Eagle Flight allows owners of the competing Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR headsets to play together online, with Werewolves Within and Star Trek: Bridge Crew getting cross-platform support when they launch. Ubisoft says that cross-platform multiplayer was a goal of theirs from the start because all of their VR titles have a strong emphasis on multiplayer, and cross-platform is the best way to ensure that they have a thriving online community. Of course, this same logic could be applied to regular, non-VR games, so hopefully Sony and Microsoft are listening. Werewolves Within will take a bite out of players on December 6, with Star Trek: Bridge Crew beaming down on March 14.

That’s not the only Ubisoft-related VR news. To promote the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie, Twentieth Century Fox has launched Assassin’s Creed: The VR Experience. It puts users inside the world from the film, allowing them to watch a medieval battle unfold right in front of their eyes. It’s available now on the Oculus Rift, and will also be coming to select theatres alongside the film, which arrives December 21. Hopefully this won’t be the last Assassin’s Creed VR experience. Ubisoft hasn’t said when the next game in the franchise will arrive, but some kind of VR support would be pretty cool.

Nintendo Switch VR? – The Rundown

Today in the Rundown, we have some cool news about the possibility of virtual reality on the Nintendo Switch! We also head to the galaxy far, far away for the latest on the Star Wars franchise, sink our teeth into the new Walking Dead video game, and finally, get some very good intel about Call of Duty!

Nintendo might be jumping into the world of virtual reality after all. With Nintendo’s new system the Switch coming out in just a few months, patent applications filed by the company indicate that they’re planning to bring VR support to the console. The patents reveal that Nintendo is working on a head-mounted display that’s essentially an empty shell, with an opening in the front where users can slide in the detachable Switch screen. They would then be able to run VR games off the detachable screen itself, kind of like how the mobile Samsung Gear VR headset works, only with the Switch screen instead of a smartphone. The patent also points out that the two Switch JoyCon controllers could then be used as motion-sensing VR controllers, similar to the more fancy Oculus Rift Touch controllers. This seems like a smart and efficient way to bring VR to the Switch, and would likely be a lot more affordable than rival Sony’s VR headset for the PS4. Before you get too excited, keep in mind that filing a patent is no guarantee that Nintendo will actually follow through and make it happen. The company has been back and forth about VR. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has stated that he doesn’t think the solitude of VR is the right fit for their games, while Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé has said that they’re just waiting for VR to become more mainstream before they start using it. We’ll let you know when more details about their VR plans come in. The Switch will hit stores in March. If it does come with a VR peripheral, hopefully it will be better than the Virtual Boy, which was a disaster for the company when it was released back in the mid 90s.

Nintendo files patent for VR-like headset for the Nintendo Switch

Posted on December 16, 2016

Posted in News, Switch |

A few months ago, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima gave a very interesting answer when a reporter from Bloomberg asked if the Switch would ever receive its own virtual reality headset. While the executive didn’t answer in the affirmative, he admitted “it’s something we must consider.”

And consider it they have.

Earlier this week, Nintendo filed a patent application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for a Switch accessory that looks quite similar to mobile virtual reality headsets such as Samsung’s Gear VR or Google’s Daydream View. The goggles-style headset would feature a slot at the top, which would house the Switch’s tablet screen. After strapping it to their head, players could then use the detachable Joy-Con controllers or a Switch Pro Controller to play VR-style games.

However, as with all patent applications, it’s important to remember that Nintendo is merely disclosing a possible use for the Switch. There’s no guarantee this headset accessory is in development, and on top of that, the patent application doesn’t include any mention of “virtual reality” or “VR.”

Nintendo will fully unveil the Switch on January 12, after which they’ll immediately take it on a multi-city Preview Tour across North America. While it might be a while before we learn more about the console’s possible VR capabilities, it’ll be released sometime in March.

Nintendo President talks about adding VR support to Nintendo Switch.

According to Nintendo President, Tatsumi Kimishima, the video games company is still considering VR support for the Switch gaming system. He told Nikkei that Nintendo will do this if it can solve one big problem with the user experience of VR. There is currently no time frame on when this may happen. This isn’t the first mention of VR and the Switch, though. In June of last year, legendary game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, spoke on the matter. He said they have been researching VR and that they have the “Core Technology”. Miyamoto also explained that Nintendo wants to make something that:
“can be played for long periods, carries value, and is affordable.”
Furthermore, Nintendo actually patented a VR headset in December of last year. It is designed so that the Nintendo Switch tablet can slide into the headset. While talking to Nikkei, Nintendo President, Tatsumi Kimishima, said this about the problem they are trying to solve:
“If we are able to resolve the issues with playing [VR] comfortably for long hours, we will support it in one form or another.”

This is tricky, as VR gaming has several issues that are comfort-related. The weight of the headset is one of them, though this is a minor issue. Nausea from simulated movement and eyestrain are others. Having used a VR headset before, I can testify to this. If the game simulates you moving, this creates a contradiction in the brain. Your body is telling your brain that you are stationary, but your eyes say you are moving. This sensory discrepancy can lead to that nausea.
Since a VR headset covers your entire field of view, your brain thinks the images its seeing are real. This makes the virtual experience more intense than playing on a TV or computer screen. Some developers have noted that large creatures don’t work well in VR. That’s because a creature larger than the player tends to illicit a primal, survival type of fear in the player. That just isn’t so fun. This means that games need to be intentionally designed for VR. For example, a 3rd-person game probably would not work so well in VR (especially when the camera moves, causing nausea). It remains to be seen whether they will add VR support for the Nintendo Switch, but it could be very cool if they do.
