What kills everyone in New York (World)? Maya or the Virus?

Seems like Maya's powers are triggered when she is emotional. If her brother died(or killed) would she just be an untouchable killing force? I mean what is her limit and range if pushed? Can she relax on her own or is her brother required to counter her power?

methinks the outbreak is triggered by Sylar trying to take Maya and Alejandro's power, but then it would be the same story one more time

New York was evacuated. there was nothing to indicate that everyone had died.

Not true, the preview had said that 93%(or was it 98?) of the world's population was dead.

IIRC, Mohinder warned Bob that their experimentation with the Shanti virus could lead to creating a mutated strain that has no cure.

Then again, it could be both. The virus coming in contact with Maya might be what makes it unstoppable.

As someone else said, for it to be Maya, 93% of the world's population would have to come within her range.

Seeing as that's damn near impossible, it's clearly and undeniably the virus.

I say a combination of the virus and Maya... makes sense in my opinion

My Theory. Both Mohinder injects Maya with the test cure, & with her powers being what they are triggers a deadly virus, instead of cureing her.

Edit: Basically what the dude/dudette above me said as well.

And you know the limit of her power? What is that range?

IF her level of power is tied to her emotions, then the death of her brother could set her off big time. The powers are binary, Peter and Ted could create small explosions and massive ones.

Depending on how the Virus transmits, the same argument about coming in range with an infected person is true.

do you have a link? I didn't see the preview and I can't find it on the official site.

I would think that the company would want to infect Maya with the virus once they find out what she can do, just to stop her- unless she gains some sort of control, that is. Perhaps it will cause her powers to expand or just cause the disease she creates to change and become communicable- then people wouldn't have to be in range with her to get sick, just in range with someone else who already has the virus/disease.

Is it me or does this feel like a plot to 24

Aggreed. No one knows her range, and any regular person who would see the Black Death on a corpse would think, "oh, don't worry about that, that's just Maya's power" They would think that it was a Virus that was making them bleed black in the eyes.

I agree with the combination theory. she tries for the cure, but it mutates into something that's lethal to a grander scale. It almost seems too obvious

I really think Maya will have nothing to do with it. I think Maya's power and the Shanti virus are completely seperate, and that it's merely a mutation of the Shanti virus, created by the company, that gets set loose and kills the world.

Besides, previews for the next episode show that they're hosing Peter and Caitlin down, which means this is an infection that spreads. Maya's power seems to just kill outright, and there's been no talk of it spreading.

I think what causes the mutation in the Shanti virus is Maya's ability. My theory is the Co. does to Maya what they wanted to do with Monica. How it spreads is another story.

I dont know why Maya's ability would cause it to mutate. If anything, the Company accidently mutated it on their own, and it's Maya wanting to take the cure that causes it to get out. Like the cure the company came up with doesn't work like they expected it, and it becomes an uncurable strain which ends up spreading once someone takes it, whether it's Maya or anyone else.

I just dont see how her ability itself would factor into the virus changing. The shanti virus and Maya's ability are two completely different things.

We don't know how they would react together. It just makes sense to me considering Maya's ability is so positively fatal and instant, that if her power mutated with the Shanti virus and had the ability to spread like a virus instead of her being there, it would explain why it killed 93% of the population. Plus, the Shanti virus only strikes a small percentage of specials. Also, so many people ask "What is Maya and Alejandro's roles in the the overall arc?" Well, here ya go. How it would mutate? I have no clue, that's for the writers to figure out. I just think Maya has a large role in this outbreak, but I don't think it's her ability alone that is responsible. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Whoa! I almost start a thread about this... thank you search feature ;)

I think it's Sylar, even though in the future think is the Shanti virus... pretty much like in last season's future everyone believed Sylar were the exploding man, when it turns out it was Peter.

Now the question is (if you believe this theory): Who does Sylar kills? Maya, gaining himself the power to kill, or Alejandro, denying the only way to stop Maya's power?

It's you. Unless Jack or Chloe has the power to make people ooze out blackness from their orifices just by being near em...

If Jack Bauer can rip people's stomach lining out with an ordinary bath towel, I think he can find a way to induce oozing out of ANY orifice.

OR maybe its both, I believe that the Company will give her the virus, instead of killing her, it will increase Maya powers tenfold.

Wait couldn't the Virus outbreak be due to Nikki? Mohinder injected her with the antibodies at the end of last ep, and it wasn't working. He said the strain had evolved or something. Nikki could be the start of the outbreak.

I never thought of it that way...
