Deadline is reporting that Andy and Lana Wachowski, who are currently filming Cloud Atlas with co-helmer Tom Tykwer, will next turn their attention to Jupiter Ascending.

The site says that it will be the duo's first major sci-fi action film since "The Matrix" trilogy, which earned $1.6 billion worldwide. There are no details known about the Warner Bros. Pictures film other than that it is an original creation by the Wachowskis. The studio is currently discussion which star to lead the cast.

Deadline notes that the Wachowskis had trouble setting up their hard R-rated drama about a gay relationship between a U.S. soldier and an Iraqi called Cobalt Neural 9.

I don't get why a blockbuster is premiering at Sundance? And Jupiter Ascending? It's not like it's highly anticipated or anything.

sundance is not for highly anticipated movies. like Jupiter haha :)

A crazy, fun action movie that's like The Matrix and Star Wars? :mrk:

Also, some amazing alternate posters have been put out.

I just watched Brazil a few weeks ago, it's such a splendid and beautiful movie. The humour holds up well even though it's been thirty years.

That description from Twitter user "Hendrix" is really high praise.

Those posters are magnificent as well.

The only people not rooting for this film are those still pissed at the Wachowskis for the Matrix sequels.

Get over it.

Jupiter Ascending will be amazing.

I think there is far more motivation for the haters than that.

This movie comes off as not just being its own thing, but as being proud that it's its own thing. This doesn't look like Marvel/Star Wars. Those who prefer the comfort of the familiar will thus recoil in anger and disgust.

Interstellar got mostly positive reviews and has made over 671 million worldwide while John Carter got mixed reviews and flopped. The two films have absolutely nothing in common.

Who's talking about John Carter?

Those posters are the most glorious thing in the history of things. Bummer about the iffy Sundance buzz, though. I have a high tolerance for weird and unconventional, but if the movie drags, or is incoherent or thinly plotted... that's a concern. I believe reviews come out Monday night, hoping for the best.

I have no doubt that this film will be interesting. Even it's a failure, it'll be an interesting failure. That much I know I can count on the Wachowskis for. I'm looking forward to checking it out. The Matrix universe is one of my favorite sci-universes, so with this being their first attempt at an original sci-fi since 2003, there's no way around me giving this a shot.

Btw, thanks for posting that link on the previous page max314, great interview/discussion. Lana is incredibly intelligent and insightful, and Andy's always been so chill and down to earth.

There is really nothing about the film's trailers that looks at all original. Such comments are a head scratcher to me. Sorry, but those staking out such a position just come across like they want to be iconoclastic contrarians, ala Armond White.

I think it comes down to the casting. I think Mila CAN be a great actress but she's not the type who works well with hard sci-fi and fantasy, just like Natalie Portman. They seem out of place.

I do like the designs however, and the ambition. I can't fault it for that.

You're more than welcome.

It's always great to hear them talk.

Just aesthetically, it's more Gilliam-esque and absurdist than anything being made for the same price tag.

In a time when everyone's rushing to riff on Nolan's brand of sober naturalism, the Wachowskis have stuck their middle fingers in the air and said, "Watch THIS!!"

Her and Tatum aren't solo leads. They kind of live and die by who they are surrounded by. Surrounding them with each other doesn't do anything good.

I mean, I'm gonna go see it because I support the Wachowskis and what they do. I won't be theatre hopping into this one, I'll actually buy a ticket. Shocker. :o

It feels like it's been a long time since we have had a proper space opera. So I am ALL IN for this one.

I want to see this with a large group of friends so we can play the over/under on Sean Bean.
