The Wachowskis Returning to Sci-Fi with Jupiter Ascending - Part 1

I liked Eddie Redmayne, Sean Bean (my favorite actor) and the general universe that was created. Though I hated Jupiter herself and her entire story.

I actually agree with this take for the most part. It's a really great, imaginative and provocative universe. Jupiter herself though unfortunately got lost in the shuffle.

The universe they created deserved a better movie though, so maybe we'd have a chance of seeing more of it. Alas. At least I can say that I'm still pretty enamored with The Matrix universe after recently re-watching Reloaded and Revolutions.

Honestly, if they start writing EU books I'd probably read them. Especially if they follow Sean Bean.

Saw this the other day.

Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Very little was 'legit' awesome (some of the ship designs, the asian girl's speeder, the design and cg of the androids, some of the sets and worlds)

Some of it I felt was intentionally campy and ott, which I enjoyed as well (Redmayne, the stressed out accountant android scene)

and some stuff I felt was unintentionally lame, but the ridiculousness of their inclusion still entertained me (roller skating Tatum, the cousin, the lizard things)

But then there's just the bad stuff that I wish wasn't there (the overall story, the incomprehensible space battle through the mines, bland characters, etc).

But overall, I had a good time.

what did you think about the Terry Gilliam homage and cameo? i liked it.

Just saw this, actually kinda enjoyed it.

I mean, I wouldn't say it was "good" - the dialogue was quite terrible, the action wasn't all that great, the two leads were severely miscast and Eddie Redmayne was utterly ridiculous in every scene - but...the world was wonderfully imaginative, the cinematography was quite beautiful and it was a pretty fun space adventure overall, imo.

Also, Gilliam's cameo was inspired because literally seconds before he appeared, I found myself thinking, "this is starting to look pretty Gilliam-esque" and then there he was! That whole sequence was a straight-up Gilliam homage, so putting the man himself in there right after the moment the homage became clear was a brilliant move. Definitely helped endear the whole movie to me, haha.

As I said, not necessarily a good movie, but would watch again. On premium cable.

What the hell did I just watch?

This movie was awesome to watch...when you're drunk.

Well it opened to 23 million in China

http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4039&p=.htm

So right now it is at 152 Million worldwide
So much for China "saving" it as I saw some predicting. Even its performance there (totaling $44.6M) proved to be underwhelming. Not bad, but not great. Kingsman, Big Hero 6 and Cinderella all totally crushed it there.

This is an all time bomb. They had to have lost well over $100m on this. Considering distribution and marketing, it I'd say it is easily over $150m. Could be close to $200m.

Was expecting much worse from this, Mila Kunis going from a brother's deceit to another was pretty entertaining, but was it just me or the main villain seemed a bit like a crybaby at times?

Would give the film a 4/10.

Channing Tatum did an AMA. Laawd.

Jupiter Ascending? What was that?

Great question. I have the same one to myself.

I finally had a chance to watch this tonight. Visuals were done really well. Story was just flat out boring. Tatum wasn't as bad as his makeup looked. Judging by the visuals alone, I know this movie lost a pretty big chunk of change.

4/10

Agreed, the visuals and the universe were great and the visuals team behind this movie should do more sci-fi and/or superhero movies.

I agree with the posters above, the movie had it's moments but everything doesn't quite come together. Tatum and Kunis did better than I expected from them, which isn't saying a whole lot but I really was on the fence with this movie solely because of them. I had a good time watching it, it's pretty entertaining. But I am still holding out for the Wachowski's to really hit one out of the park again.

I didn't find this to be any worse than The Fifth Element and actually enjoyed it more than the Star Wars prequels.

The thing that cracks me up is that if this were an anime, people would absolutely be eating it up. This is something I've noticed with the Wachowskis: they essentially want to make live action anime. Keep all the audio, dialogue, story, everything down to a tee, and just replace the live action with animation, and people would say it's all mindblowing genius and their lives have been changed.

I liked this movie a lot. I'm weird because I tell myself what something is going to be, I adapt to it, and I choose to be open to it. I don't go out of my way to hate something before I even see it. I did the same thing with Terminator: Genisys and I loved it.

People say the Wachowskis were a one-hit wonder with The Matrix, but I disagree. It just happens to be the only live action movie they've made that was meant to be live action.

Apparently I'm the only one who remembers Bound exists. :o

I loved the world they created here. The whole concept of worlds being harvested for life force is interesting. The story is a cool twist on the whole exiled princess thing too.

Problem is the characters aren't really engaging and i don't really like Kunis as a lead.

The Wachowski's have got so much imagination. The whole cross breed thing is awesome, especially Sean Bean being part Bee? WTF? That's bad ass. The scene with the bureaucratic androids? Very funny.

Their problem is they haven't really been able to create iconic characters like they did with the Matrix trilogy. If this film simply had some better lead performances i think it would have been received much better.
