The Amazing Spider-Man The "why reboot the Spider-Man franchise" Thread?

Venom deserves to be in this trilogy far more than the likes of Rhino, Shocker, or Electro, in my opinion. He could probably carry a whole film by himself better than the three of them could put together.

Really, Shocker and Rhino either of them, could cameo in the movie with Green Goblin. In his first comic appearance he was trying to take control of New York's crime syndicates. So Webb could easily have Shocker as the leader of a syndicate, or Rhino as a leader/lackey with character.

We don't have Kingpin, so why not incorporate more of Spidey's rogues?

I think what's gone wrong with Venom over the years is similar to what happened to Freddy Krueger during the course of the A Nightmare On Elm Street series. Much like Freddy Krueger, as Venom grew in popularity, he transformed from the antagonist into the main character. At one point in the 90s, Spider-Man was introduced with the phrase "From the pages of Venom" when he guest starred in another comic book. This demonstrates that philosophy to a T. Venom was no longer Spider-Man's ultimate challenge and a representation of his dark side, he became the star who Spider-Man would defeat and put away until the next time sales called for his appearance.

I don't have a problem with those characters appearing in and of themselves, but I wouldn't want the cream of the crop of Spider-Man villains to be excluded for them to do so.

More than anything, I would love to see Mysterio on the big screen.

I think that most of the more well-known Spider-Man villains could be fair game film except for the redundant/copycat characters like Hobgoblin or Carnage.

Or dinosaur ghosts from outer space.

My question about Mysterio is what the hell would he actually do in the film? What would be the purpose of his illusions?

I dunno, he'd do what he does in the comics and cartoons.

Doesn't he just steal stuff? Spider-Man defeats Mysterio's illusions to undercover his plot to...steal stuff! I think that would be a bit too anti-climactic for my tastes.
This sums up my problem with a lot of the B-list villains of the Lee-Ditko/Romita era: They're just generic hoods with superpowers.

That doesn't mean they can't be expanded on and given more substance, motivation, etc etc.

And I agree with you. I'm just saying that why Mysterio uses illusions is far more important than what illusions Mysterio uses. Otherwise, however "cool" his illusions are, it's just meaningless, pointless, and therefore boring, like a Michael Bay film.

Very good point.
There's a lot of possibilities. I've always liked the idea of Quentin Beck being a special effects guy who goes mad with greed and power. It would be interesting if perhaps he comes from the world of special effects being stuff that is done live, on set, and being frustrated with the way movies are made more and more with computers, leading to him becoming angry, jobless and obsessive; with a desire to show everyone just what is truly possible in his realm of illusions. Just an idea.

They could always team him up with Chameleon and do the whole 'frame Spider-Man for stealing [insert item here]'. Not all criminals are maniacs who want to cause chaos or destroy mankind. Plus, they could have him be one of the Goblin's henchman and not reveal that fact until the end of the film. It could be another way for Norman to mess with Peter's mind.

Interesting idea, though it doesn't really explain why he would spend thousands of dollars (at least) to create illusions to divert attention from simple robberies.

I know that not every criminal is a maniac who wants to cause chaos or destroy mankind, but the problem I have with those characters is that simple robbers don't stack up against the Big Bads like Green Goblin, Venom, or Doctor Octopus. Some want to exclude those villains because we have seen them before in lieu of the likes of Mysterio, Rhino, Vulture, et cetera, when they aren't worth giving they worth giving those Big Three A-listers up for. I would one of those big three over all of the B-listers like Mysterio put together any day of the week. :gg::otto::venom:

Someone like Mysterious would work better as a secondary villain, being bankrolled by someone like Osborn.

Right, well we agree.

Er, Mysterio, excuse me, I have that "auto-spellcheck" thing on.
