I'm not a hater, seriously, and I've done a lot of searching and couldn't find a thread on this which I thought was strange.

It's just that I see a fair bit of talk in different threads and I thought we could concentrate the talk here.

I saw the new trailer and I loved it. When I saw the bootleg POV scenes, I thought it was gonna be absolute rubbish but seeing the HD version really does it justice, looks great. When I showed it to my mates at work, their reaction was pretty much, cool, why are they rebooting it? That looks like an origin story they say, clearly puzzled.

The thing is, in the original trilogy, 1 and 2 were bloody fantastic! 3 was the only one they botched and really only the second half (and venom, sigh). Add this to the fact that it was very recent and HUGE, people are gonna be confused.

This new movie could be good, hell it could be great but I just don't get why they are rebooting it so quickly, unless it's for the money. Hell Spidey has made over $1,899,346,518 according to Wikipedia (a bad source to site I know but I'm tired from work) already so maybe they see it as easy money.

If they start rebooting Batman every 10 years people are gonna get bored real fast, since they're already talking about if after TDKR, just hope the same thing doesn't happen with Spidey.

On a side note, I think Garfield is a much better choice than Macquire or however you spell his name, not a fan at all.

Anyway, enough from me, hopefully some more from you guys.

Or let this thread disappear into the graveyard hehe

They had to reboot because if they didn't do a new Spidey film in time, the rights would've went back to Marvel Studios. If that wasn't in the contract and Sony would get to keep the rights, they would've REALLY took their time and not make it so quickly just so they could make more money

It's a popular and lucrative franchise, that's the short answer.

Spider-Man, like most comic-book heroes, also has a wide variety of stories, tones and incarnations that you can essentially reboot it within years of a previously sucessful trilogy and have it be substantially different. There's obviously changes here, with the inclusion of Peter's parents, the early relationship between Peter and Gwen, and an entirely new villain. I think there aren't many franchises or movie properties that can or should be rebooted so quickly, but comic book franchises and in particular Spider-Man lends itself to the minority that has enough of an expansive history to reboot and essentially not tread the same ground.

Couldn't have said it any better. But Sony still wouldn't have rebooted Spidey so quickly in the case they would've got to keep the rights

SM3 was crappy, the actors wanted too much money, and the direction for SM4 was looking bad (vulturess).

Seemed like a good time to start fresh.

Indeed. The reboot haters don't seem to realize that if they would've just made Spider-man 4 we would've probably gotten something way way worse than this reboot

I'm actually hoping for a continuation of the story in a few years time when the cast is deemed "too old" as opposed to a complete reboot.

I wouldn't mind if that had happened with the Raimi movies but, unfortunately... the ending of the last movie pretty much destroyed the chance of that happening.

I'm not against reboot. First, I was skeptical, but after Webb and Garfield were announced to work on the film and Sony elaborated on its vision for a new trilogy, I was all for it. So far, everything looks really good.

My, as well as many others', only and biggest complant isn't the fact it's a reboot, but the fact they will do origin again. They could have easily stayed true to their story and tell us about Peter's first days as Spider-man, without really having to show us his origin.

They could have used flashbacks and non-linear storytelling for that and start with Peter, still a high school student, already fighting crime for the purpose of revenge until he finally runs into Ben's murderer, learns that justice is of greater value than revenge, and moves on with the storylines of Oscorp and Connors, still seeking answers for his parents' past. It would have worked and audience wouldn't need to compare the film's story to Spider-man'02.

Id like this series of Films to extend past a trilogy. I want to see garfield grow into this role. I cant wait to get ASM out of the way ASAP so we can get number 2.

Spider-Man needed a reboot. So I'm extremely happy that we got a reboot.

And yeah I agree Spidey 2007, if ASM is great and the start to something truly awesome I hope it won't end in ASM3 if there is more to explore.

If it wont end there, the series will at least take a break before making the next one

While I'm suprised by how soon after Raimi's Spider-Man they're doing this reboot, I'm not bothered by the decision.

I loved the first two Raimi movies (the third one was a massive, sloppy disappointment that I'd rather forget), and am looking forward to a new take on the story.

The trailer was interesting enough for me. It felt like a slight mix between the mainstream Spider-Man comics, and the Ultimate Spider-Man comics (which I love, but have fallen behind on due to my break from buying comics).

I'm looking forward to this new movie.

.

No it didn't. There were far more stories you could've told in the Raimi universe including the Lizard. Also, Spidey 3 wasn't even close to a franchise ender like B&R. Peole need to stop acting like it is. And SONY must be the dumbest studio on earth; they could've made Spidey 4 with about the same budget and gotten a far bigger profit. The cast's so called loyalty to Raimi would've dissolved once they saw the green.

I don't want them to feel as though they have to churn out a new movie every year or two.

Taking a break, then coming back with one epic movie would be a lot better than just making a sequel to keep up with other franchises.

Actually, it did.

By sm3 the series was creatively pigeon holed. Raimi's stories confined and ruined the potential of the relationships between the core characters and would have required a seriously skilled writer to come up with something to circumvent the mess the series found itself in. Did the series need to be rebooted? No but it was just far easier to do so and avoid making the creative and narrative mistakes of the old series.
The way Peter's goofy love for MJ was handled was appalling. Any potential love interest for Peter would have lacked credibility which is why Gwen's inclusion in SM3 was more of a fan service joke to drive an even more absurd plot.
I am one of Raimi's biggest detractors when it comes to the spidey movies and so I am delighted this reboot is happening, however, I'm slightly annoyed that there may indeed be a big focus and a lot of time dedicated to conveying spidey's origin. Something simple and significant would have sufficed but I fear we just may have the first hour or so of the movie retelling the origin which I personally don't really care for.

I enjoyed all of the Raimi SM movies. The third not so much, in fact a lot less. But one of the things that I really grew to dislike were;

1) MJ became a real whining b***h of character who was solely interested in just her own feelings and had no empathy for anyone else, let alone Peter.
2) Peter would just take every kicking MJ laid out and did not once stand up to her, ofttimes, unreasonable tirades.

It made the characters unrelateable and at times laughable. So in a way I suppose I am saying that a reboot became necessary. Not withstanding the fact that the director and main cast almost always make an attempt to get a lot more money every time a sequel comes around, and at some point a studio can't actually afford to finance a sequel.

As a non comic book reader or Spiderman fan ( I like all 3 movies tho ) :
- a reboot ? yes why not.
- an origin story again ? not so much.

If Spider-Man 3 wasn't, Spider-Man 4 sure would have been. The Vulturess? Spidey Glider with tentacle-attatchments? Personally, I'd have liked to have Schumacher's take axed after Forever, right before it was even possible to make the abomination that was B&R, same applies here. It may not have been B&R bad but it was still a travesty of a film.

Besides, this franchise was going in the dumpster anyways... respectable fans wouldn't have given it a chance after SM3 (especially when -still- no Lizard and a villain the general audience finds generic), and others wouldn't have been interested because of no "teh carnage!!!" Sony couldn't win without getting rid of Raimi, honestly.

You do know that those designs for tentacles in spidey glider were for the toys right?:whatever:, and the first spider-man was supposed to have a green goblin girl sidequick, they would probably cut her from the film, and if not, from the fan hatred they would probably turn her into black cat at some point of production not to anger fans too much:yay:
