The Wizard of Oz (1939)

watch it yourself and do your own homework

Did, writing it as we speak. Sorry for asking for ideas?

No biggie, just a funny you asking for homework help

Been a few threads like this past few weeks

Haha, well there are several prominent visual designs in this movie, so it could stimulate a good conversation. As well provide a stepping stone to address the lack of visuals in movies today?

Well obviously it goes from black and white (and not just b/w, but a sepia-type appearance) of the bitter reality of 1930s America--a dusty and impoverished Kansas farm--to a literal escape from reality in the fantastic world of Oz. You can talk about technicolor and the evolution from three-chrome lighting and basically how everything is just so freaking shiny and bright in that movie.

Ya, visuals is what makes the movie what it is. Of course I talked about the intentional transition from black-white to color, and it's significance. But what do you mean by three-chrome lighting? I have never heard of that before. Lighting is the hardest thing for me to write about.

I have been talking about props, like her shoes. They are red and sparkly, they even stand out in the colorful world of Oz. The fairy tells her to never take off her shoes, and I believe the shoes represent individuality (with each the heart, brain, courage, etc.. making up that individuality), and that individuality even shines brightly in a world as colorful as Oz.

That and you have this girl from the midwest who loses her home, she runs into an industrialist and a farmer in a world run by forces from the east and the west. The only way to save the land is to follow the yellow-brick road (gold). She uncovers the wizard as being a corrupt politician--the world of Oz or ounces, the measurement of gold.
