The Wizard of Oz (Remake)

dude... the whole "hollywood's out of ideas" thing is getting very, very old. just stop it, hm?

"hollywood" makes hundreds and hundreds of movies every year, and maybe 5 of them are remakes. i'd hardly call that out of ideas.
i am talking about big budget fantasy movies.
i am old :oldrazz:

I, for one, am glad this will be getting a remake. Although, I am a bit disturbed by this comment: " You’ve still got Dorothy trapped in an odd place, but she’s much closer to the Ripley from ‘Alien’ than a helpless singing girl."

Most people like 'the helpless singing girl.' That's what makes The Wizard of Oz one of the best films of all-time, Dorothy's innocence. This is once again a perfect example of Hollywood being lazy and dumb. They can't find a known actress whom can compare to what Judy Garland did so they decide to cut out the music and give Dorothy an attitude. It sounds to me like we'll be getting something much closer to The Wiz than The Wizard of Oz.

My hopes for a remake were to keep the entire original film basically intact
'cept with new scenery and special effects and new actors.

MY CASTING SUGGESTIONS
DOROTHY - An Unknown
(there isn't an option. How many 17 year old actresses are there in Hollywood who can sing?)

SCARECROW - OWEN WILSON

TIN MAN - BEN STILLER

COWARDLY LION - VINCE VAUGHN

GLINDA THE GOOD WITCH - NICOLE KIDMAN

THE WICKED WITCH - MADONNA

they look and feel like the judd apatow version of it... and don't get me wrong, i love those comedies.

but not for a wizard of oz remake.

I happen to think they could pull off serious roles:
Owen Wilson = Ned Plimpton/The Life Acquatic with Steve Zissou
Eli Cash/The Royal Tenenbaums
Lt. Burnett/Behind Enemy Lines

Vince Vaughn = Norman Bates/Psycho

Ben Stiller = Chaz/The Royal Tenenbaums
Alex Rose/Duplex

I know they could pull it off but enough of that...

What do you think of my choices for the witches?

i guess this is what we have to look forward to

Haha. The munchkins looks hilarious. I would love to see a more faithful adaptation of the book. I would love to see darker in tone and look, but this is a bit much. But I doubt it would turn out like those toys.

if they can do it right then i'm all for this remake. i just hope it doesn't turn out to be another...

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures are teaming on "Oz," a revisionist take on the L. Frank Baum's 15-book "Wizard of Oz" novel series reports Variety.

Scribe Josh Olson ("A History of Violence") will write and "Spawn" creator Todd McFarlane will produce. Both are working out the tone which will aim to be a darker and more adult - something along the lines of the recent "Harry Potter" film than the famous 1939 MGM feature.

McFarlane says "I want to create (an interpretation) that has a 2007 wow factor. You’ve still got Dorothy trapped in an odd place, but she’s much closer to the Ripley from ‘Alien’ than a helpless singing girl."

They also say the film will be more of a sequel than a remake.

That's exactly what I have a problem with here too. He shouldn't go trashing the original...it's not just some cheesy musical that got it all wrong. The movie is a classic, and I can't imagine most audiences being all excited for a remake of The Wizard of Oz.

Take Wicked, for example. The book, which is a prequel to Wizard of Oz about Glinda and the Witch as college roommates was turned into a hugely successful stage musical, but it's almost nothing like the original Gregory Maguire novel. The book was dark and grisly, and full of all kinds of political undertones.

But on stage, audiences didn't react to anything that really took them away from the original movie, so they adapted the show to be completely tied in with the movie. The murders and most of the politics are gone, the story is sweeter, the whole second act takes place alongside the events of Wizard of Oz, because that's what the audience wanted.

And I loved Wicked on stage...the book depressed the crap out of me. I've never read the original L. Frank Baum books, although I'm planning to eventually, and the idea of a new movie series is definitely intriguing. They just shouldn't be stepping on where they came from and expect that everyone is going to be OK with it.

They also say the film will be more of a sequel than a remake.

This will be a disgrace and fail miserably. The original earned Oscar Nominations for Best Picture, Best Visual Effects, Cinematography, and Art Direction AND wins for Best Original Song, Best Original Score, and Best Performance by a Juvenile(Judy Garland.)

It also is regarded by most as one of the 10 best films of all-time.

If this remake/sequel comes anywhere close to that I will be shocked. Re-inventing Dorothy as a foul-mouthed **** is what those fools are trying to do. It sounds to me like they want to cast Lindsay Lohan as Dorothy and change her name to Butch.

Of course it's going to be a sequel. God forbid they cast a complete unknown as Dorothy because no known actress can do it.:whatever:

Sure they can...
Plenty of actresses nowadays do drugs...

This one is going to probably stay truer to the source material than the original film did dude.

Yeah, the original film is great and considered a classic.

But, why exactly should that stop production on a film that will be TRUER to the original book than the 1930s film?

In this case I don't think they're looking at remake, rather looking at adapting the actual book complete with the "dark" factors in it that were missing from the original film.

I don't know about the other characters, but just going off of the lion passages that I read- there can definitely, without a doubt in my mind, be a better adaptation than the original film. Whether or not it will be a better film, in the eyes of many probably not due to the original film. But, better adaptation? Definitely possible... the lion doesn't come off half as cowardly as he does in the film.

From what I read, the Lion is just a bit afraid- but if he needs to, he'll go into action without a second's notice. Not run and hide. The Lion is actually AGAINST running and hiding and says that's the stupidest idea he ever heard of!

It's a bold and risky move, but it's worth taking a shot to adapt the book in it's entirety, darkness and all.

I want to see the Lion say he was going to rip Auntie Em to shreds and chop off the head of a gigantic spider.
