The Wrestling Thread Will Take You Out, Like On a Date

Yeah, it kinda sounded like a blanket statement, but I agree that the realistic approach doesn't work for everyone. We need more characters.

Agreed. Let's take Cena for example. He is somebody that a lot of us could relate to but his character is still not going over quite well with the fans. And this is coming from somebody that doesn't dislike Cena.

I really like The Miz, but something about him lacks. He looks to baby faced/clean to have an effect as an aggressive heel. I'd like a babyface run.

Del Rio would have been better off in his mask. Bringing in Cara was a huge mistake and Dos Caras would've had a better pay off.

It would've been cool to see a heavyweight superstar performing insane high flying moves.

I always liked Mistico but he is a perfect example of why they shouldn't put fresh signees on television so soon.

I think part of the reason Sheamus is popular/works is because he is kind of a throwback cartoon character wrestler.

You know, when you think about it, Zack Ryder is relatable. Underneath the colorful ring gear and catchphrases he's a wrestling mark from Long Island with a Youtube show. He's the most over mid-card guy out there. Dude is selling merch and that's why he finally got TV time.

Whatb would be your perfect dream Wrestlemania? You can pick wrestlers from any era or company, just limit it to ten matches. Here's mine:

WWF Title match
Shawn Michaels vs Randy Savage

Hulk Hogan vs The Rock vs John Cena

Grudge match street fight
Rowdy Roddy Piper vs Stone Cold Steve Austin

IC Title match
Bret Hart vs Edge

Undertaker vs Sting

Brock Lesnar vs Big van Vader

TV Title match
Eddie Guerrero vs Owen Hart

Tag Title match
The Dudley Boys vs Harlem Heat

Chris Jericho vs Mr Perfect

Crusierweight title fatal four way ladder match
Rey Mysterio vs Evan Bourne vs AJ Styles vs SuperCrazy

Dream Wrestlemania:

World Title Match - Main Event

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin vs. Hulk Hogan

Each guy in their prime. I know it wouldn't be the most spectacular match in the world but the fact remains they are the two biggest wrestlers in the history of professional wrestling and it would be amazing to have seen these guys go at it.

Intercontinental Match (4 Way Dance)

Shawn Michaels vs. "Macho Man" Randy Savage vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat vs. Bret "The Hitman" Hart

Once again...each of them in their prime and it would be absolutely magical. If anybody has ever seen Wrestlemania 3 and Wrestlemania 12...you KNOW what I'm talking about. These four guys defined what an amazing wrestling match can be.

US/TV Title match (3 Way Dance)

Chris Jericho vs. Kurt "Mr Perfect" Hennig vs. C.M. Punk

Think that these three guys would be amazing together. The late Kurt Hennig was probably one of the most underrated guys in the game and these guys would have set it on fire.

Honestly, that's all I got now. I've seen a lot of amazing matches in my day that I would consider dream matches. Definitely seeing Eddie Guerrero vs. C.M. Punk in 2001 was a treat that I'll never forget. Paid 8 bucks for the ticket and had a front row seat. They put on a 30 minute match that blew my mind and that's when I knew I'd see C.M. Punk make the big time.

Here's mine:

WWF Title match
Shawn Michaels vs Randy Savage (c)

WHC Fatal Four Way Sumbission Match
Kurt Angle Vs Owen Hart Vs Chris Benoit Vs Bret Hart

Dolph Ziggler Vs Mr.Perfect

IC Title Falls Count anywhere match
Eddie G Vs Cm Punk

Undertaker vs Chris Jericho

Trish Stratus Vs Beth Phenoix

No Holds Barred grudge Match
Stone Cold vs. Brock Lesnar
- Imo the feud that had potential but never happened

Triple H (02) Vs Ric Flair in his prime

Randy Orton vs Scott Hall (90's razor ramon)

Tag Team Championship ladder Match
The Hardy Boys Vs MCMG

I'll stick a dream Mania up soon but I just wanted to say on the whole relatable argument, my view is that there is no key route to success, connecting with the fans is unpredictable, some guys look certs to be stars and yet never catch on, some guys look like Mick Foley or are dorks like Ryder, but somehow they connect with fans through something that they have, the magical it factor. Trying to argue one way or another on how a star is made or what works, be it off the wall or grounded, is fruitless IMO.

It's said that Alberto Del Rio's stock isn't as high as it was a few months ago within WWE. There's a feeling that RAW is lacking a top heel and while The Miz is good, he's not seen as someone who can be the brand-carrying heel. Del Rio was supposed to be that heel but the feeling is that he's not quite at that level either.

In time, I reckon Wade Barrett could be that 'top heel' the WWE are lacking these days.

Whatb would be your perfect dream Wrestlemania? You can pick wrestlers from any era or company, just limit it to ten matches.

Iron Man Match for the WWE title: Ricky Steamboat vs. Eddie Guerrero
#1 Contender's Match: Owen Hart vs. Kurt Angle
Streak vs. Streak Match: Andre the Giant vs. The Undertaker
Hardcore Legends Match: Mankind vs. Abdullah the Butcher
Intercontinental Title Ladder Match: Shawn Michaels vs. The Dynamite Kid
Tag Team Title Match: Hart Foundation vs. Blanchard/Anderson
#1 Tag Contender's Scramble Match: Haas/Benjamin vs. Zenk/Martel vs. Road Warriors vs. Freebirds
Triple H vs. Jake the Snake
Mil Masceras vs. Rob Van Dam
Ivan Putski vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin

IC Title Falls Count anywhere match
Eddie G Vs Cm Punk

If you were in Pittsburgh in 2001 you could have seen this match. Ironically enough Eddie was IC Champ at the time and "put the title on the line". They wrestled to the time limit and then Eddie got on the mic and said the fans came out to see someone win. They wrestled for about 10 more minutes and Eddie won with, of course, a frogsplash. Amazing match and I was front row. :woot: CM Punk was basically just starting out and looked great. I remember he was outside the venue warming up and he propped me and my friend up...then later on my friend went to that indie's wrestling school and CM Punk took him under his wing...got to meet him a few times and he's, quite honestly, one of the nicest wrestlers I've ever met. Plus he's into comics. :woot:

There could be a number of reasons for that. I like Pee Wee but his segments with WWE have been awful.

Exactly. If it was that cut and dry , WWE wouldn't have so many failed experiments on their hands . They know how to build a star but making one connect to the fans and get over is out of their hands. There's no telling how people will react , especially nowadays. I think Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase Jr. are a good example of this.

Yeah, WWE has tried really hard to push Ted but it hasn't worked. Mostly because he's as interesting as a block of wood and a mediocre in ring performer. Hard to believe Million Dollar Man spawned that guy. Maybe Ted should hang out with Joe Hennig so he'll seem more talented by comparison?

All-Stars Wrestlemania

Hulk Hogan Vs. Steve Austin

The Rock Vs. Shawn Michaels

Bret Hart Vs. Kurt Angle

Sting Vs. The Undertaker

Goldberg Vs. The Ultimate Warrior

Randy Savage Vs. Eddie Guerrero

John Cena Vs. Dallas Page

Jake Roberts Vs. Randy Orton

CM Punk Vs. Ricky Steamboat

Lex Luger Vs. Triple H

Mr. Perfect Vs. Chris Jericho

Brock Lesnar Vs. Vader

But at this point it's hard to repackage Del Rio just to make him interesting again. Not only that but they missed the boat with him earlier this year. He won the Royal Rumble just to get placed in the opening match and lose his World title match.

I don't even think it's a problem with putting people towards the top too soon. In some cases that works like with Lesnar. The problem is putting them up there then booking them terribly. He seemed to lose 3 times for every 1 big win. If you want to make some one an instant star it CAN be done, just not when they are booked like that because then no one takes them seriously.

I agree. Its a clash of interests (wanting to have your cake and eat it too) which leads to bad booking. They wanted to make Del Rio a top star, but wouldn't book him to pin Cena. Instead of going through with trying to make him really look like "The Greatest Of The Greats", they give him forgettable title runs.

I was fine with him losing at Wrestlemania 27 because that would've been way too soon for him to be champion. Had Ricardo helped him beat Cena at NOC, retain the title at HIAC, then lose it to Punk at Survivor Series, it would've been a fair tun with the belt, but nooooo Cena just HAD to get that last title run for whatever stupid reason.

The WWE has mishandled both Miz and Del Rio. Del Rio should have stayed on Smackdown and Miz title reign was horrible. Miz should have beat the living hell out of Lawler in that first match by using any means necessary. Making an out of shape announcer look better than a guy your investing so much in, is completely stupid.

I agree with Del Rio going back to Smackdown. Better to build him back up that way unless he's fed to Orton right away which accomplishes nothing.

And I can't stand The Miz, but when the best thing about your run as WWE Champion is beating a commentator on PPV clean, that's completely pathetic!

They'd make a great tag team: The Apples That Fell Far From The Tree.

My dream tag team match would be the Road Warriors vs DX.

All the other matches mentioned would be quite awesome to see, as well. I'd particularly like to see Stone Cold vs Roddy Piper.

Is he talking about the anonymous Raw general manager. I wanted to see a resolution to that but it seems the ship has sailed. I guess they could tie Stephanie into it. Although looking back , John Laryngitis would have made sense.

Johnny Ace and Stephanie McMahon were the most likely choices but it seems like WWE has put it on the backburner to the point that nobody even cares anymore. I guess the time to make the big reveal has passed. Like you said the ship has sailed.

They need to position Ziggler and Cody for the role IMO.....or drive a truck filled with money up to Bobby Roode's house.

I think they should push Ziggler now since he's already dance in the main event a little bit before. He could be the anti Punk in a lot of ways. The two of them could have some great matches.

Del Rio is not ready to be the top heel on RAW. He needs to work on his promos and a mid-card run would have helped too.

With Del Rio he had no credibility since they rushed him into the main event way to fast. To do that with somebody they have to be phenomenal or a freak of nature like Lesnar or Taker. When you saw a monster Lesnars size doing the thing he did he had instant credibility and people were immediately drawn to him.

It was a similar thing with Goldberg. He wasn't the wrestler Del Rio is but he had a presence. Thats not something you can teach so easily.

As Soon as Del Rio opened his mouth and started doing the same indecipherable promo over and over it was over.

i'll be honest stuff like this always creeped me out. who would enter stuff like that it would just be a little too weird

It does seem rather prostitute-ish doesn't it? It would be way too awkward for me. You just know she ain't really that interested in being there.

The reason I relate to Ryder is because he's a guy who has had absolutely nothing given to him. He's had to fight and scratch and claw for ever little taste of a push he can get. He wasn't a chosen one or groomed to be a star. He worked hard and did it all himself when the company sh** on him. And he did it. You've got to respect that as opposed to guys like Del Rio and McIntyre who had big things handed to them so early in their WWE careers.

Thats the kind of story normal people can rally behind. People are rooting for Ryder to make it because we know he wants it so badly.

Batista Calls WWE's PG Product Brutal, Comments on Today's WWE Superstars

Posted by Marc Middleton on 12/16/2011
- Former World Heavyweight Champion Batista spoke with The Daily Star in the UK to promote The Scorpion King 3 and talk about his MMA career. Here are some highlights:

The current WWE product:
"It’s brutal. I can’t watch it. I can’t connect with it. I no longer know this business. I don’t do PG wrestling."

The Miz and today's Superstars:
"Love me or hate me, when I was there everyone took one look at me and knew I could beat someone up. I don’t think they look at Miz that way."

"It’s sad. It’s not their fault. These days the guys have their hands tied, they are so limited in what they can do. The difference is that guys like Rock, Austin, Triple H, excuse me, but they had to have the living ***** beat out of them to get where they are. They went through war and the audience knows it and the audience appreciates it. The guys today will never get to that level. It’s sad, but that’s the reason for it."

******

I agree with him to a certain extent. I think you can still have a good product in the PG era but if these guys aren't able to push the envelope once in a while it becomes repetitive and boring. Also it's a shame you can't have blood anymore. When Jericho put HBK through the Jeritron it was shocking and you bought into Jericho being truly sadistic. Nowadays Miz cant do stuff like that so he doesn't seem nearly as threatening.

Also i agree with what Bret said about management not realizing the talent they have on their hands. Also 1997 was one of my favorite years in wrestling.

You've confused Roode with Storm. Roodes not a big drinker

That would also be enough to hire Jake Roberts.

You forget that Crown Royal is Canadian. Roode would be obligated to sign up just for patriotism alone.

Jake Roberts would sign for a single bottle, plus a handful of corn nuts.

Considering WWE's track record with Canadians Roode might want more incentive that that.

Getting screwed on the way out, dropped from the top of the Kemper Arena, fired for speaking out on steroids....that sort of thing.

If you're Canadian jobbing to HHH is also part of the job description.

Now if your vagina is Canadian made (even if other parts are made in the USA) you've pretty much got carte blanche to make it to the top

It is a good example, you look at the two and it's clear which Vince will have earmarked as a star, however it hasn't turned out that way. Look at Dloph or even The Miz, who ever thought the Miz would make it at all let alone to the top end?

Bret seeing himself as King Arthur aside I think he makes some decnet points here.

I think they should push Ziggler now since he's already dance in the main event a little bit before. He could be the anti Punk in a lot of ways. The two of them could have some great matches.

I agree, he would be like a young HBK who was cocky as hell but could deliver and thus be booked as being infuriatingly good. If he's booked as a sneak heel he'll end up like the rest.
And the guys now don't have the living **** beat out of them? I mean he mentions Rock who was a hand picked golden boy, guys like Bryan and Punk have had a much harder road in the business.
