There's nothing irregular or unlikely about a black person having a latino last name. Tony Revolori is latino, can't his surname be Thompson in the movie?

Perhaps not, but my comment wasnt just about the surname. The character is latino. A member of an underrepresented minority whereas Flash Thompson is not. I don't think it's likely that they'd change that or cast a non hispanic in that role, or that Zendaya would even go for that given her views. If you do, that's fine. I'd rather not get into a tangential debate about race/ethnicity.

Ok, I see where you're coming from. I'm just thinking, it's a little weird when all the other high school characters are from the comics but there's this one random new character among them. That's why I think she's Michele Gonzales

Yeah, I thought that was strange as well. I think that's why some were speculating that it was a fake name like when Revolori was playing Manuel Nguyen. In any case, whether she's a new Michelle or an adaptation of Michele from the comics, I'm curious to see what they'll do with her.

Maybe they'll change Michelle's surname from Gonzales to something else. After all, in Grease they changed Sandy's surname numerous times depending on who was playing her. In the stage musical it was always Sandy Dumbrowski. In the movie, when Olivia Newton-John played her, it was Sandy Olsen to reflect her Australian heritage (although I don't know if Olsen is particularly Australian). When Julianne Hough played her earlier this year in Grease Live, she was Sandy Young.

It's probably going to be a mix of OC's and characters like Liz, Ned, etc. I doubt it'll be Gonzales because obviously Zendaya isn't Hispanic.

yeah, besides the fake name possibility, Zendaya was also the 1st young actress cast after Tom.

Also, the news of her casting suggested she'd have a minor part that would be expanded in future films.

That being said, NOTHING concrete ever existed that she could be MJ. It was all pure speculation. Which is why I was puzzled why some posters here were so adamant she was indeed MJ.

It really is a headscratcher?

The first role they made a priority to cast, which they spent weeks looking for just the right actress, was for an original character named "Michelle" (Since Watts didn't mention a last name, I'm going to assume it's someone new).

A KEY ROLE, that will be expanded upon in future films.

Meanwhile, the rest of the core cast, are all playing classic characters from the comics (Liz Allen, Flash Thompson, Ned Leeds, etc.).

It still doesn't add up. LOL

I dont think so. Gives her a chance to put her stamp on a role without any preconceived notions of who she should be. If popular enough, she may end up getting translated to the books

I don't want to jump to conclusions until I see the film (or have a clearer idea at least of what they're planning) but in theory, I completely agree about using original characters. The Spider-Man mythos has BY FAR, the richest and most diverse, supporting cast of characters in all of comicdom. It's a goldmine, just waiting to be mined.

Exactly. Them making original characters for Spidey's supporting cast is completely pointless and in my opinion, in bad taste.
