Just because her character is smart and wears skirts doesn't make her a substitute for Gwen..

Perhaps not. But there are superficial similarities to Spectacular Gwen (a potential love interest who is bookish/geeky, may get a makeover, and has Liz as a romantic rival) and the fact that she was the third person cast, did a chemistry test with Holland, and has a role that will grow in future installments suggests she could be . Not necessarily that she is. It's just speculation, and I thought it was more likely than Michelle being a cover for Mary Jane.

Perhaps...but I recall someone who saw the footage suggesting that Zendaya's character Michelle had a crush on Peter. In which case, it'd seem like they're setting up a love triangle.

There really aren't any prominent female friends in the Spider-man universe who couldn't be classified as a love interest at one point or another. It's possible that they've created one entirely from scratch, but speculation will tend to be based on the character's established history in the comics and media adaptations.

What I'm guessing what happened is that they may have a specific arc in mind for Zendaya's character, no character from the comics was a good fit, so they decided to create a new one.

Eh just make her an original/obscure love interest. We've gotten MJ. We've gotten Gwen. Do something different for a bit.

While I do hope she is Mary Jane, first we have to realize the report by The Warp is made by Umberto Gonzalez, who slightly infamous for making false "Scoops". He's the guy that got everyone believing that fake BvS "leaked" script was real, and then started spewing that Kevin Smith wrote it as a misdirection when it seemed as those it was indeed fake. I won't say he hasn't got some things right before, but I'd take this report with an unfortunate grain of salt.

The thing is-- He's working for a Hollywood trade in The Wrap whose reliability is on-par with Deadline and Variety. They would never let him publish an article like that if it was complete BS. They've checked with their in-house sources as well as his own.

The romance in the Raimi films was downright atrocious. They need to stay as far away from that as possible. Just use the source material. It's all right there, just waiting to be adapted and brought to the masses.

It wasn't perfect for sure as MJ seemed to lack some agency at times, but I did like her in the first two films and thought Raimi at least was genuine in their depiction. I just prefer that to the Webb films' portrayal of Gwen/Peter, but yes. The source material is the best. I remember the Raimi films got me into Spidey comics back when all we had were X-Men and Spidey, so I'm excited to see MJ and Peter back on the screen again.

I've always suspected MJ was in the cards here and the recent report reaffirms it. Especially with how hard they're pushing the diversity angle with this cast, the biggest 'put up or shut up' move they could do is race-swap one of the most famous love interests in the genre.

I'd have still absolutely preferred a caucasian-freckled natural ginger in the part, but I'll take this for now. At the very least she actually looks like a supermodel.
