It's a bigger deal for me than just hair color. Black/Asian Mary Jane is like Black/Asian Alfred to me. I can't accept it.

I mean, fair enough if you feel that way but I just find it confusing myself.

Why would she suddenly sport red hair at the end...?

The whole transformation idea, i.e. Basket Case from TBC. Not saying she has to have red in her hair but it is a staple of the character.

If she is MJ I think it's good casting based on looks (outside of the movie). I'm not sure what she looks like in the movie or how her character will be written, though.

Man you must hate the Aquaman casting because that is a lead white, blond haired blue eyed character that DC race bent.

Aquaman needed some upgrade, IMO. Mary Jane did not.

Aquaman needed some upgrade, IMO. Mary Jane did not.

Aquaman was fine the way he was and could've easily worked without a drastic reimagining.

and that has become my problem with this film. It's gone beyond the Zendaya/MJ thing.

outside of Tom being perfect casting for Peter, and Keaton playing the villain, NONE of the casting choices have inspired confidence in me.

it's either way too many people ( especially on the bad guy side ) or the rest simply don't resemble their comic counterparts in any recognizable way.

the whole thing just doesn't make sense to me. it's like they aren't even trying to be accurate to the source material and just casting for the sake of having a diverse looking cast.

and I don't like that too well.

my interest in this film has dropped markedly.

I mean, look at the supporting cast in SSM. That was diverse. You had whites, blacks, Hispanics, and Asians. And yet, none of the major characters were changed and more importantly, they all acted and looked like their comic characters.

I don't think Zendaya as MJ is an upgrade, just another version. It's not different than Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

I'm fine with MJ being black, the only thing I'm wondering is how her character will be portrayed because she looks frumpy in the pictures and that's not usually how the character looks, at least not the most popular version of the character that most seem to have wanted.

Why did you choose this photo instead of the several other ones of her with red hair that were posted in here where she could pass for MJ? Either way, she's fine. No one looks 100% like their comic counterpart. Wolverine was too tall. Christian Bale didn't look like Bruce Wayne. Blah blah blah.

I knew Peter David's was going brought up. That's not the defining image of Aquaman, we both know it's the orange scales and green pants, short blonde hair and clean-shaven. That's Aquaman everybody knows.

that's why it's so weird.

Emma's Gwen in TASM ( which was more like Ultimate MJ ) was nerdy and geeky and smart. yet she was also beautiful and hot. They didn't try to overdress her and hide her beauty.

Zendaya is perfectly capable of pulling off the hot model look ( as evidenced by the many pictures and gifs in this thread.....lol ).

I'm not judging anything based on set pics (I've done that before and was wrong). There's certainly room for a more faithful approach to the character. They're in high school. Maybe later in her life she gets a modelling gig and has something of a makeover, with red hair. I will admit that she looks more like MJ in some other pics than this one but I'm going to wait and see. I think there's potential.

He still looks relatively close to the bearded Aquaman we saw in comics and animation.
