Homecoming The Zendaya is Mary Jane thread

You hope she doesn't look more like the character she's supposedly playing?

The red hair is irrelevant at this point. It's not going to all of a sudden make people like the choice more or less than they already do.

I disagree, if she ends up looking anything like the manip you just posted, that's going to do wonders in converting people.

Right up there with the red hair is the sex appeal. Having both nails the (superficial) foundations and that's half the battle.

Well it's not like anyone noticed or liked MJ having red hair :o

It's arguably the most visually recognizable thing about her. I see nothing but positives coming out of that. I myself will be pretty stoked.

Exactly.

Not exactly loving the casting, but let us wait and see. Apparently, Feige took a special interest in it and Marvel knows this is a major character in their universe. They have not screwed that up before... well not for the non-villains anyway.

So, I am going to see how this goes. With that said, if she has no red hair by the end of the movie, I will be disappointed.

red hair will only work if it looks natural.

if it looks like a bad dye job or obvious wig, then no thanks.

just give her auburn, dark brown hair instead.

and if her character doesn't have red hair for most of the movie ( which she doesn't have in the set pics ), and she suddenly has red hair at the end when she has the Jackpot transformation, that means the character obviously dyed her hair red.

and once again.........that's not the character. a stupid, needless change.

either stick with red hair all the way through or don't even bother.

I don't see the big deal about dyed hair. Girls were changing their hair color every week when I was in high school.

but that's not the character.

MJ is a natural red head. Her red hair is one of her defining characteristics. In just about every incarnation I can think of, MJ is portrayed as a red head. Not someone who dyes her hair red because she undergoes a makeover.

by that standard, you could have Peter be blond for most of the film, but he wants a new look by the end so he dyes his hair brown.

making MJ a character who dyes her hair red as part of a makeover is starting to make changes to the character herself that goes way beyond just changing the race of the character.

you are changing her backstory, motivations, etc.

Bueh. I damn well hope she has red hair. Dyed or not. idgaf

Maybe just in the final scene when she meets peter for the Homecoming dance?

I disagree. It's far less common for males to dye their hair. Girls, more specifically, popular girls and girls who are into modeling/acting would be far more likely to dye their hair.

Assuming Zendaya is capable of pulling off red hair, I hope they dye it.

Pretty sure she has had red hair at some point. Think someone posted something.

and that may be true in real life.

but again, it's not the character of MJ.

it would come across as very "inauthentic" if she has non red hair for the entire film, then suddenly has red hair when she's all glammed up and shows up at Peter's door at the end with the Tiger-Jackpot line.

it would really feel like MJINO. you purposefully make the character look ( and possibly behave ) so drastically different from how MJ is supposed to be. then, all of a sudden, you turn her into the "real" MJ in terms of looks and personality.

I don't buy that.

why even make her MJ to begin with? why not keep her as an original character ( Michelle ), where you are free to portray her any way you want?

Man, I'm just hoping for the best. And "inauthentic" seems kinda subjective. I would personally prefer them do it that way than have her not have red hair ever.

I'm doing a lot of hoping here already (considering the last few Spidey flicks we've gotten). Another thing I'm hoping for is that Angourie Rice or someone plays Gwen and that Harry Osborn is in the movie to some degree.

It's gonna be weird not seeing them whatsoever and simply rehashing the MJ-only romance from the Raimi-trilogy.

Angourie Rice is Betty Brant.

Just based on the little information we have so far, it doesn't sound like we'll get anything like the Raimi romance.

I tend to agree. The red hair is a key identifiable trait for Mary Jane. You have her pop up at the end of the film looking like that (or since the news is out there already show something official) then it would change the general feeling.

As to the dyed hair...ideally sure I'd love MJ to be naturally with that hair colour. Ideally I'd be all for MJ not being in this movie and Zendaya actually playing an original character who would rise to prominence through the film and leading into future ones.

But, if we're just talking about what would make this work best....yeah dye the heck out of that hair.

Angourie Rice is Betty Brant.

it was confirmed.

I'm sure someone can find the source link.

to me, it's yet another headscratching casting. Not only because Angourie could have made a fine Gwen or even MJ, but also because now Betty is apparently a classmate at Peter's HS when she's supposed to be part of the Bugle crowd ( and older than Peter ).

well, assuming its not a misdirect, i agree with everything you said.

She didn't strike me as Betty visibly or otherwise. And now I've got even less to hope for cast wise.

You may wonder why Z is still listed as Michelle, well I believe this photo was taken either before or a bit after the news of MJ (it was from AtlantaFilming on Twitter I think) and basically Umberto Gonzalez ruined the darn surprise.

Apparently, we'd go through Homecoming not really knowing who Z's playing only for the reveal to be MJ but eh. Umberto let the cat out of the bag.

Also, just like I said in the GD thread, I think Selenis Leyva could be playing a gender-bent Miles Warren.

While we would have found out eventually this is pretty annoying ruining an end spoiler like that this far in advance. What a punk.

That, may be true. I wonder how large of a role she's even playing. Reports seem to suggest shes a "lead female role" so not likely to be just a cameo or small reveal.

Anyway, if that cast list has her character as a misdirect, just let me hope that its the same with Betty/Gwen! D:

What's the (M) mean anyway? Misdirect? ;)

Ontop of that, they spelled it "Brandt." Hmmm... curiouser and curiouser.
