Things You HATE: Volume III

I decided at the beginning of the year that my mantra from now on is "**** it, just go for it." One of the phrases that have always stuck with me is "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take". So I decided I'm never going to let fear keep me from doing something I want to do.

And after typing all that, I kinda realized that that's probably not the kind of fear you were talking about but decided to share anyway.

Trust me, I would love to throw caution to the wind and just 'go with it'. This fear is a little more complicated than that though...

So complicated that you feel you need to live with this fear controlling you? I would suggest weighing your options. As complicated as "going for it" might be, I think you might find that it'll be worth it.

People who are constantly on their cell phones. At the supermarket, on the road, at dinner, etc.

:csad: ****. That's...oh man. That really, really sucks. I'm guessing you two weren't TOO close if you haven't found out till now, but still, that sucks.

We were once a lot closer-a LOT closer. But since then I'd gotten too wrapped up in my own stuff to check in.

Cuz when it's cold, everybodies genitals are as tiny as yours? :o

At best, this is a gross misrepresentation of the piracy problem. According to the idiot that made this image, stiffing a cabbie of his fair after a taxi ride is OK since you aren't stealing his car. It doesn't change the fact that you are deliberately WASTING the cabbie's time and work, and reducing the likelihood that he will be able to continue working as a cabbie. The sense of entitlement amongst software pirates sickens me. So many of them honestly believe that no harm is being done by their actions, and that it is not only their right to continue taking things they haven't paid for but also that content makers are for some reason obligated to continue making things for them to pirate, and improving the quality of them. How people can be smart enough to understand computers and yet stupid enough not to understand basic economics infuriates me.

Poor analogy, if you stiff a cab driver you're not stealing the cab but you are stealing the money he should have been paid since that's what changes hands.

I'm not advocating piracy, but that's a poor analogy to me.

Video games and other software are a service, and you pay for a license to access them. Saying "if I pirate this, it's not like it's disappearing from a store" is ******ed because you are not reimbursing the people who provide the service, but you are taking advantage of it anyway. Another example would be ducking under the turn-style at a subway station, or running out of a barber shop without paying for your hair cut. Technically you did not physically change anything, but you took advantage of a service that you did not pay for the right to use, and you are ensuring that in the future there will be less money to improve and / or maintain the service which you are abusing.

I don't think piracy is a problem. People who pirate don't buy. It's as simple as that. If there was no piracy then all people would do is physically borrow something from their friend and make their own copy. They wouldn't purchase those products at all, so it's not doing anything but wasting the money of companies trying to fight it. You aren't going to get rid of it so you just have to accept it instead of scapegoating it. When I see all these record companies blaming the problems of the industry on piracy it makes me laugh. It's not piracy's fault but rather the record company's fault. Instead of saying that people don't like singles enough to buy albums it's all piracy's fault.

Piracy decreases legitimate sales, thus hurting the manufacturer.

-8 American Degrees (Which i'm betting is what the temp was for you) is -13 Celcius. By Candian standards this is pretty good for early february. Wimp :cmad:

:argh:

:cwink:

I typically love the winter. Just ready to put the snowblower and winter coats away

Then you have the people in the industry who try to be all hip and cool that advocate piracy saying "it's not about the money, it's about the fans". I'm sure.

Why bother trying to make it seem like what you're doing isn't stealing? Be proud to be a pirate. If only you could totally kill a guy while downloading a song illegally. It would be a pirates life for me. :o

The problem is that the culture of piracy is spreading. It's the simple idea that "Oh, Fred over there is pretty smart, he knows how to get games for free. Let's ask him to get us a copy!" that spreads around beyond just the hackers and contributes to the growth of piracy overall. I also don't think it's fair that I, as a consumer paid and supported a business venture, and then someone else steals it and does not pay for it. Indirectly, pirates are stealing from ME, because they are benefiting from a service that only exists because I PAID FOR IT.

Also, that's not even adressing the rampant problem of hacking in video games, which usually goes hand-in-hand with software piracy. If someone did not obtain a game legitimately, they have no incentive to play it legitimately either, so all of us who play fairly end up having to put up with people cheating their way to the top and corrupting our profiles just because they have no moral conviction not to.

So this is about you getting your ass kicked in Street Fighter?
