in all fairness, depending on the size of the stores, sometimes it's not the employee's fault. we carry thousands of line items, and with resets happening usually at least once a month, sometimes it's hard enough just to find an item's new home. we have vendors and reps coming in at least once a week, adding, deleting, moving products

That's true, and of course I don't expect them to know everything about everything in the store, but I'm referring to the employees that respond with an, "Uhh... I don't know" or don't respond at all when you ask them where the produce section is, for example.

lol, ^no offence Darkness Falls, but i have always found that term to be a little funny, like these kids who use the term talk as if it is some type of kung-fu skill, and they are part of a kung-fu gang who go out on the edge, but they can survive it because 'We are straight edge! not wobbly! we're no drunk, we are straight edge!' It does have that sound of trying to sound tough but sounding quite sweet instead, like a Priest who does boxing or something, no way is he gonna punch anything other than a punchbag.
