Guardians of the Galaxy This one needs her own thread - Pom Klementieff IS Mantis

"If I touch someone"............I? Why the heck is Mantis referring herself as I? EPIC FAIL!!
Yeah, I noticed that too. Seems that this Mantis won't refer to herself in the third person, which is a little disappointing, but oh well. Not a deal breaker by any means.

Wouldn't most critics and the fanbase like her more because she's humorous and people mostly like funny characters?

Pretty much what others here have said; critics have been conditioned to believe every female hero character has to behave like Batman to be considered empowering.

I don't like this Mantis that much. It's a personal thing but I prefer Abnett/Lanning Mantis design much more than this one. I know Gamora is green too but I don't care, people have same skin color too and they can coexist in the same film.

But I think Pom will be great in the role.

I am really impressed with her design. It looks very cool.

Don't really know about critics so I'll take your word for it.

Such big beautiful eyes. They're hypnotising honestly

Ha ha, I loves Gunn's attention to detail. After watching the trailer for the 1000th time, I noticed that the way the tails of Mantis's tunic spread out when she sits makes it look kind of like she has insect wings.

Stick with me, kid, and you'll go places (prison, forced labour camps, the back of a cargo ship heading to Phuket, etc.).

All of them or do I have to pick one?

Anyway, I have never read any story with Mantis. My knowledge of her is pretty much that significant amount of fans really dislike her appearances in 70's, lol. But I liked the small bit that we saw.

And she is cute.

Back in the day readers would get steamed when Mantis knocked the snot out of Thor, which she did on multiple occasions. I don't think the Pom version is at that level, but it would be fun to see this waifish empath one timing a heavy hitter.

The comics basically gave her the powers of Karnak and maybe Shang-Chi regarding that.

Basically what Vartha said, that some critics won't think she's serious enough. Especially as a female character, there seems to be the mindset that every female hero as to be like "grrrrr, I am so serious and empowered, because I am fighting gender stereotypes, grrrr." This Mantis is like a kooky, dippy starchild, and I think it's wonderful. I want to see her in the Avengers so she can interact with characters like the Hulk, Widow and Hawkeye. The insulting nickname Tony Stark will come up for her will be next level.

Yeah that's a good point, I must admit, I'm almost as bored with the warrior woman archetype as I am of the screaming waif one.

I like mantis though. She reminds me of Soso from orange is the new black. All sweet natured and new agey

From what I've seen/heard, the opposite is true. People are kind of tired of every female character looking/sounding/acting the same (especially since there seems to be no problem making male characters have distinct looks/personalities). So I could see her being embraced by many people. Provided, of course, that she's genuinely amusing and likeable.

I'm happy that she'll be more comedic than serious, that spot is already filled by Gamora. I doubt many will have a problem with Mantis when the entire film rolls around. No point in adding in new characters if they're going to be the same as other pre-established characters but with different designs.

And I also don't find it to be a big deal that she doesn't refer to herself in third person. I'm actually incredibly glad she doesn't. Less an epic fail and more of good decision making, imo.

For all we know this scene takes place after the Guardians have been constantly telling Mantis that referring to herself as "this one" is incorrect. It's too early to assume much. We've barely seen and heard her.

I doesn't even look like she's "comedic" as in constantly telling jokes or making quips. It looks like her, oh what's a good way to describe it, social awkwardness (that'll work well-enough) is what's being played for comedy.

Like when she revealed that Quill is in love with Gamora, she didn't seem like she was trying to be funny there. It seemed like she said it, because she thought that it was right to do. And she also seemed surprised/confused when the others reacted to it like they did. So it could be a scenario where she just doesn't know social etiquette like that. "You're not supposed to reveal something that private/intimate to everyone, unless you have the persons permission to do so first" and all that.

They have said that meeting the Guardians is her first real interaction with others, so her lack of knowledge of social norms would make sense.

I could actually see her and Drax bonding over that to a degree.

Oh you, internet.

And Black Widow... and Maria Hill... and Lady Sif... and Agent 13... and Scarlet Witch... and Nebula... and Wasp...

Uh. I'm sensing a pattern here. :hehe: The straight women of the MCU, and their sexual orientation is not what I'm talking about.

Yeah this is pretty much what I was trying to say last page. She's humorous in an unintentional way, kind of like Drax and Vision.

Heck I've seen quite a few people complain about Wasp already. Like in the comics, Janet has a more fun and kind of flirtatious personality. But in the movie, they write Janet out, and replace her with Hope, who's more generically "serious" and has daddy issues. Many see it as a wasted opportunity to do something different.

We do! And Captain Marvel, Spider-Woman, America Chavez, Kate Bishop, Ms. Marvel... heck even Monica Rambeau has her moments.

And these are just the ones I'm familiar with, I'm sure there are even more. The comics are certainly not lacking when it comes to endearing and funny ladies, and yet all we've gotten so far from Marvel Studios is one Strong Female Characters™ after another.

But in the movie, they write Janet out, and replace her with Hope, who's more generically "serious" and has daddy issues. Many see it as a wasted opportunity to do something different.
I still haven't forgiven Marvel for what they did to Janet. And the fact that they replaced her with her absolute bore of a daughter only adds insult to the injury.

So yeah, that's why I'm ridiculously happy about the direction they have seemingly taken with Mantis, the character this thread is actually supposed to be about. :hehe:

Widow was kinda funny in the first Avengers. And in Winter Soldier.

Oh please, you don't need contact telepathy to see that. The blind and hermaphroditic Moloids living beneath the Earth could see that. :hehe:

Yeah but she's mostly a serious character, who sometimes shows a funny/humorous side. Whereas you have all these male characters in the MCU who are more overtly and often played up for comedy. Including their poster boy Tony Stark.
