Tiny terrier saved kids from pit bulls

POSTED: 11:37 a.m. EDT, May 2, 2007

Story Highlights

• Jack Russell terrier was playing with kids when pit bulls attacked
• Terrier fought off pit bulls until adults could intervene
• Terrier mauled too badly in fight, had to be put down

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- A plucky Jack Russell terrier named George saved five children from two marauding pit bulls, but was so severely mauled in the fight that it had to be put down, its owner said Wednesday.

George was playing with the group of children as they returned home from buying sweets at a neighborhood shop in the small North Island town of Manaia last Sunday when the two pit bulls appeared and lunged toward them, Allan Gay said.

"George was brave -- he took them on and he's not even a foot high," Gay told The Associated Press. "He jumped in on them, he tried to keep them off.

"If it wasn't for George, those kids would have copped it."

One of the children, Richard Rosewarne, 11, was quoted in the Taranaki Daily News on Wednesday as saying George fought with the pit bulls to keep them off his 4-year-old brother, Darryl.

"George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him -- one on the head and the other on the back," Rosewarne said. "We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George."

But George was so badly mauled that a veterinarian had to put him down, Gay said.

South Taranaki District Council official Graham Young said the two pit bulls had been impounded, and likely would be put down because of the attack.

In New Zealand , owners of dogs judged to be too aggressive can be required to have them neutered and dogs involved in attacks are destroyed.

That dog is a true hero.

I think people who teach their dogs to be aggressive or attack people or other animals should be neutered and put down.

You don't need to "teach" pit bulls to be aggressive, they are so by nature. However, there should be some kind of (strict) test to make sure you can handle a pit bull (and similar, aggressive dogs). This kind of stuff happens way too often.

That's a fallacy. I have friends with pitbulls and those dogs are the most docile, sweet animals because that's how they were raised. You get out of animals what you put into them in terms of training and environment, and pitbulls are no exception.

sad story. poor terrier...the world is truly unfair.

as far as pit bulls are concerned...aggressiveness is a stereotypical trait for pit bulls, but it really depends on how they're raised. it really depends on how ANY dog is raised. my friend has a pit bull that's one of the most loving dogs i've known because he's had the dog since it was born and disciplined it to not be aggressive/violent. dogs are just like us because we don't become violent until we learn to be violent.

As sad as it is, in a way Im kinda glad.
I hate those yapping little f***ers anyways lol

My old Golden Retriever tore his ACL defending my little brother form 2 Saint Bernards around 6 years ago. Dogs are truely mans best friend.

I have the feeling that my spaniel would have done the same when I was a kid. Dogs are frighteningly loyal.

I thought the terrier had stopped the pit bulls by getting stuck in their throats.:o

All jokin aside I have a golden retriever and he the best mof***in dawg on Gods green earth. If anything happened to him Id be gutted.

See, I do have feelings lol.

More people are killed every year by labradors, dalmatians and retrievers than pit bulls- fact.

Actually Pit Bulls and Rottweilers account for about 60% of all dog related deaths in the US.

i read this earlier, it's sad that the dog had to be put down

i really hate when ppl train animals to fight and be aggressive. and a lot of ppl think rottweilers(for example), are mean violent dogs, when every rott i've seen has been nothing but a big kind lovable dog. it's the owners and they way they treat the dogs that makes a dog mean and aggressive.

anyone ever see the documentary on HBO where a guy went in as a spy in an illegal dog kennel or something? that was so sad and horrible

87.4% of all statistics are made up and don't have any factual basis, including this one. :hyper:

I hope the owner for the dogs who attacked gets fined heavily for this incident.

Bingo. I don't understand why pit bulls are stereotyped as "the most dangerous of dogs" despite studies showing that pitbulls, from pug to terrier (yes, terriers are pit bulls too), although they are bred for their aggressiveness, they are no more dangerous than golden retrivers. It's ill-treatment and bad owners who should be blamed.

I have no doubt that your friends have pit bulls that are nice animals, due to how they were raised no less. What I'm saying is you don't have to try to train them to be aggressive, it's enough not to train them at all.

Or do you contend that the people who raised the dogs in the article were actively trying to lure out aggressive behavior?

Sorry, I don't buy that. Animals aren't mean and aggressive just because. I have friends who raise WOLVES and they're sweet, gentle animals. Animals get mean because they are taught to be that way.

It's well known that there are a lot of people who buy pitbulls and rottweillers with the intent of making them aggressive and mean. They do it with those dogs because they have such a powerful, damaging bite. I've also seen it done with German Shepards and dobermans. I grew up around German Shepards. They aren't mean and aggressive (unless someone is trespassing and that's a territorial issue) in the least....unless they are TAUGHT to be that way. In fact, I grew up in a ranch environment surrounded by animals (many kinds of dogs, cats, horses, cattle, goats, sheep, etc.). I've only seen one animal in all my life that was just a mean and aggressive animal for no damn reason and he was an Arabian stallion. Are you going to now tell me that Arabians are just aggressive and mean by nature? I've spent a lot of time around a lot of different breeds of dogs, including pit bulls and rotties, and they're no more aggressive than any other breed, much less in many instances. I know of more people who have been bitten by golden retrievers than I do pit bulls. Don't believe all the media hype about pit bulls being naturally mean and aggressive.
