The release of the new Ninja Turtles movie has sparked a debate I never thought I would have in my life. I consider both TMNT and the Power Rangers two big shows of my childhood. Yet, there's apparently a Ninja Turtles generation and a MMPR generation. To begin with, what exactly qualifies you to be either of these or both?

TMNT was very popular from `87/88 till about 1992. So, a lot of kids from various ages got a chance to enjoy those characters in their prime! The Power Rangers had a really strong first season, but in the following season when they got rid of Jason, Zack, & Trini and Tommy was turned into the White Ranger the show began to slowly go downhill. Which is perhaps why the movie in `95 didn't make as much money as everyone expected. The first TMNT movie in 1990 was like the third highest grossing film of the year. The MMPR movie was like #15.

Ratings-wise, Power Rangers, was HUGE during season one. It did pretty good during its 2nd, then decently during its 3rd and Zeo. Then in `97 both the Turbo movie and show pretty much killed the Power Rangers. The Ninja Turtles on the other hand were HUGE for about 5 straight years! So, there's definitely a TMNT generation and many kids are part of that generation. Yet, its debatable whether there really is a MMPR generation and who exactly qualifies as one!

I remember digging the rangers through the whole green ranger thing, but then lost complete interest.

This is a really well thought out post that sums up the history of the two franchises pretty accurately. The fact that such an intelligent post is about two kids shows when other posts about world issues sometimes read like they were written by Patrick Starfish is funny to me.

That being said, TMNT counts more like 80s to me whereas MMPR is undeniably 90s. So I'll lay claim to TMNT as part of my 80s cartoons.

Pretty much my point. The show was only HUGE for about a season and a half. So, is there really a MMPR generation? If so, who is supposed to be labeled as one?

i loved power rangers until turbo. zeo and ninja were great! gold ranger!!!!

That goes hand in hand with shorter attention spans for newer generations.

TMNT actually teamed up with the powerrangers at one point so it's kinda moot I guess.

Im the TMNT gen dunno why but i never really got into power rangers...

Yeah, the Power Rangers In Space teamed up with TMNT: The Next Mutation. It was a horrible episode. But, anyway, the argument that Ninja Turtles belong only to `80s kids is a bit unfair. The `90s kids enjoyed both the show AND movies as well. I think TMNT belongs to kids of both decades.

I'd have to agree. The 80s and early 90s were all about TMNT. Then TMNT was pwned by Powerangers after that aired during the last few seasons of the old turtle cartoon.

So the people behind tmnt decided "If you can't beat them, join them."

The 90s gen is a fair mix of both fanbases. TMNT overall, I'd say was the larger success, spawning several different toons, specials, movies, and now this new one. Rangers is still on tv, I guess, maybe some cable channel. Therefore, I'd say TMNT's generation spans from the 80s to this very day.

Not really `80s. Its more like late `80s. TMNT premiered as a mini-series in 1987. Then in the 1988-1989 television season they had their own full fleshed TV series.

Yeah, in 1993 every kids in school was like, "Ninja what?" lol.

Worst decision they ever made. In fact, Peter Laird and Kevin something both regret that Next Mutation show.

Power Rangers is on Toon Disney now. Since Turbo they've only had TWO good seasons. The In Space one and the Dino Thunder which brought back Tommy. For the most part the show sucks. They should just cancel it. And, yes, TMNT is better because the people in charge of the show take it seriously! The people in charge of PR just want to sell toys. They don't care about the show or its fans. They just care about selling toys. Which is a shame because although TMNT is better I've always felt that Power Rangers had the best mythology!

zeo was garbage, and I hated that kid in Turbo.:o

Late 80s for the cartoon but the comic came out in 84...it just took a while to catch on.

Lucky for me I was born in '85, so I was able to enjoy both. However, TMNT was a late 80s to early 90s trend, whereas Power Rangers ruled all from '93. Although, I lost interest once Jason, Zack and Trini left but stopped watching it altogether after Zeo.

On another note, does anybody remember VR troopers and big bad beetleborgs? Those shows sucked hard.

I was into PR for a short time as a kid, but TMNT were my childhood heroes and I still love them now(TMNT will end up being one of the best movies of the year, animated or live action).

I'm definitely closer to the TMNT generation, and they've shown much, much better legs.

Strange. I'm a part of the MMPR generation, but i remember enjoying the turtles much more.

MMPR SUCKS!!! I hated that show since the first time i saw it on tv. I love TMNT. Anyway i dont think that MMPR is big enough to qualify as a generation. It wasn´t that succesful was it?

I liked both of them, but I liked TMNT more by a huge margin.

I'm the TMNT generation and I too remember VR Troopers and Big Bad Beetleborgs even though I barely watched an episode.

Ah, how true. Both the comic and show were before my time. I caught them in re-runs over the summer holidays, much like I did tranformers.

Yeah, in 1993 every kids in school was like, "Ninja what?" lol.

Yeah. By that time, I think the power rangers was like "cool" because it was more mature and action packed than the in retrospect rather tame TMNT cartoon. I say mature because Powerrangers actually had more continuity. It was a soap opera for kids, a style other shows would soon copy.

Worst decision they ever made. In fact, Peter Laird and Kevin something both regret that Next Mutation show.

They should be! :cmad: How could they go from TMNT 3 to THAT? Come on!

Very true. I've had dreams of what a serious take on power rangers would be like. That first power ranger movie comes closest to that vague ideal power ranger series, because it for one thing, had all the coolest rangers in it, and the costumes were much better... the story's kinda interesting too. What'd be cool is if they'd make a completely American Power Rangers show instead of using footage from the japanese version and splicing it together with the cheesy American actors.

I hated PR cuz as a kid I thought they were the reason TMNT stopped airing so I held a grudge lol

I'm a TMNT generation since I was in 6th grade when PR debut! I regret watching Power Rangers now, but at the time I thought it was a really fun and silly show. Plus, the Green Ranger kicked ass!

But, anyway, both generation thing are nonsense! I see it this way:
1930s - Mickey Mouse Generation
1940s - Looney Tunes/Tex Avery Generation
50s, 60s, & `70s - Hanna & Barbera Generation
1980s - Regan Era/Anything that blows up/lets sell toys Generation
1990 through 1998 - Steven Spielberg Presents Generation with a little Power Rangers thrown in!
1998 through 2005 - Pokemon/Spongebob Generation
2006 through Present - High School Musical Generation

zeo was garbage

Hater! :cmad:

the comic came out in 84

Pleeeassse! No one here read the comics in 1984. We all discovered the Turtles through the original cartoon.

On another note, does anybody remember VR troopers and big bad beetleborgs? Those shows sucked hard.

Beetleborgs had that Jay Leno/Elvis character who was like a ghost or something. Hated that guy!

MMPR was HUGE in 1993-1994.

MMPR owned my childhood - even when I was absolutely tired of it, it still haunted me in my sleep - calling for me to don my Red Ranger costume and kill Ivan Ooze.
