do we even know that female soldier line/scene is in the final film?
At least we know it exists, which is arguably better than freaking over the suit's function that MIGHT be flight. :funny:

good lord, its one line by a random character who official title is prolly "female soldier #5". really dont see how this is a big deal

because it's a demeaning depiction of women which is highlighted nationwide in a high profile commercial for a big blockbuster movie.

Since when did this become the gender issues thread?

by all means show me my post where i require EVERYONE (or anyone, for that matter) to be offended. i've merely stated my personal offense to it, and have stated that women have every right to be offended by it.
Your choice of words. I do expect you would be more intelligent than actually saying it so specifically. :cwink: There's a "problem with the scene" and you continue to describe in very broad strokes as to why it's offensive on a factual level.

But again, this is my personal interpretation of your writing about your personal opinion. :cwink:

On another level, I can argue just as readily that it doesn't harm the outlook of professional women at all. In my experience, career women are thought of as cold b**ches who care about nothing except for the work. They have no hobbies or personalities. They're just there for the kill, and think that hobnobbing and joking around (which is predominant in many male-heavy fields) is an utter waste of time and beneath them. So, to show a woman in a male-heavy field joking around is a breathe of fresh air, and shows that a woman CAN make it in a male-heavy job and still have her humanity. :oldrazz:

@Motown

Maybe I'm always looking at the wrong posts at the wrong time, but I always get the impression that you're a bit negative in general. Civil and smart but negative.

I think it is downright idiotic, to be brutally honest. Just because a woman finds some guy hot does not in any way imply her to be professionally less capable, just as how a guy finding a woman hot doesn't make him so either. You can't help being attracted to someone, and even if you verbally express it, unless that attraction actually translates into an impediment to her performing her duties, there is absolutely no reason to be offended. And even if it does end up as an impediment, how is that insulting to women? Unless of course, you believe that men are immune to such "failures"...now that would be sexist.

how is it demeaning? she thinks hes hot, why is that considered demeaning towards women? wouldnt that be demeaning towards men, since they are focusing on his looks rather than what he represents. If the roles were reversed and that was a man, and he called Supergirl hot would you say the same thing about the soldier, or would u suddenly reverse ur stance.

Hah, there you go!

You're projecting. :oldrazz:

That's just how most people talk/write though. Very few actually say "in my opinion" or "from my perspective" all the time. In fact, I'm the only person I know who does that. :yay:

It likely is, but I'm sure there is much more to the scene than question and answer.

Likely, CO saw a smirk. Asked her what she was smiling about. She corrects herself and says "Nothing". He presses. She gets embarassed (she clearly is in the spots) and says "He's kind of hot". CO is shakes his head and moves on.

Its like how in Iron Man, when Tony tells the gay joke in front of Rhodes' command and they snicker and act like bros instead of professional soldiers.

He could have used a more passive tone of voice. "People can find it demeaning" instead of "IT IS DEMEANING." :oldrazz:

But why we as women don't feel it is demeaning of our genre?

nothing i've said has been stated as anything other than my opinion. for you to take it as a projection of any one else's opinion, or that im mandating others to feel the same, is a problem of yer own which im not responsible for.

as for the rest of yer statement: the problem wasnt her lack of humanity, rather her being depicted completely unprofessional in a demeaning manner.

Avoid accidental spoilers and build up the last bit of hype (reviews) at the right time. Reviews come too soon, no one remembers them.

So she was wrong, its not about the movie being terrible. :oldrazz:

But from your posts, you're saying that EVERYONE should find that offensive (including women, which you are not) because you personally find it offensive. I find Big Bang Theory to be offensive in its nerd portrayal, but I don't think everyone SHOULD find it offensive. It's just me.

I can see how some can find it offensive, but most don't try to project it onto everybody.

That show is incredibly offensive in my opinion. It perpetuates a 30 year stereotype of nerds.

However, to be honest, I find the line unnatural, but moreso in terms of military discipline. It is different from simple professionalism. At least, that is the way it seems with my friends who are in the Navy. Unless a member of his personal staff, I doubt that a captain like Ferris would allow herself to break composure like she did in the presence of a general like Stanwick. That is a huge divide in terms of ranks.

The point is:
If a man said "she's kinda hot" people would say it's demeaning to the woman he is referring to.
If a woman said "he's kinda hot" people would say it's demeaning to the woman. NOT the man she is referring to. I'm not saying you're like that, I'm just saying that's how complaints about sexism usually go.
That is not equality.

Read my last post. You could have used a more passive tone of voice. "People can find it demeaning" instead of "IT IS DEMEANING." :oldrazz:

How else am I supposed to interpret that sentence of yours, if it's not you believing that everyone should find it offensive just as you do?

It's not always interpretation. If you can't communicate exactly how you feel, don't be surprised when people interpret it differently from what you really mean.

He could have used a more passive tone of voice. "People can find it demeaning" instead of "IT IS DEMEANING." :oldrazz:

His heart seems to be in the right place though. A woman once told me that sexism towards women is still so prevalent today because most guys don't give a damn. It only works when everyone cares.

That said, I don't agree with his personal point of view on this particular subject, but he's entitled to it.
