Honestly, I'm disappointed by this. I was expecting the Kents to be around for a while. Heck, for the duration of this hopefully new series of films. When they cast Costner, I was pretty sure of that. But then again, someone on these boards said he doesn't do sequels so I guess the writing was on the wall...Well, as long as it differs from what came before in the long run...

Yes. The Tornado is in the past, apparently in 1997, when Clark is a Kansas university student.
Jonathan's death MIGHT be in the present, caused by Zod wanting revenge on Superman. We dont know for sure. Also, the super-cry people have been talking about is young Clark, like around 5 years old. Unrelated to Pa Kent's death since he was in the hospital with him.

where are we getting the 1997 date??

also......Lois being at the funeral and that suggesting Pa Kent dies in the present is interesting. didn't know that about Lois being there.

Zod potentially being responsible for Pa Kent's death would make it more interesting. Since that would prob occur in the final act, Clark would already have been Superman by then. So, he wouldn't need his dad's death to motivate him to become Superman. Instead, his dad's death inspires him to CONTINUE on as Superman.

maybe the funeral scene occurs near the end. Clark gives a eulogy similar to the All Star Superman one, and that basically sums up all the values that make Clark Superman......a reaffirmation, if you will.

so, the final shot is of Superman standing/flying tall and proud, carrying on his father's legacy of courage and kindness......

Yes, this 1997 date seems like a long time ago considering Clark would be in his late 20s (?) and he would have to have graduated in his early 20s.

Yep, rather disappointing news since having both Kents around would make for some great present-day scenes in contrast to the Metropolis-scenes.
It's also a bit uninspiring, but maybe they'll add a new take on it.

And like others suggested I really HOPE Clark isnt solely motivated by this incident.

I think the 1997 date is something that first appeared in the facebook page. Someone who is an extra and from Plano or its surroundings said it.

But, yeah, thats what I think how its going to happen based on all the information that has come out. Clark will be motivated by the Tornado to become Superman and Pa Kent will die in the present, later in the movie, probably caused by Zod.

As someone who was dead set against JK dying, here is me trying to reason with myself:

1. I'm trying to see it from a non Superman fans perspective. Just somone who want's to see a good movie. And I guess if JK dying helps add some emotional depth to the film, I can be okay with it. I mean i'm sure it'll be an incredible moment, i'm sure the acting will be great, and i'm sure i'll be blubbing like a baby!

2. It might be AFTER he's Superman that JK dies. Which i'm much, much more comfortable with. Not happy (because if he dies by Zod's hand, there's still the element of guilt because Zod would likely have killed him in the midst of their feud), but better....

...because I just can't see how they can include JK's death by any means, and not have it be the driving factor behind him becoming Superman.... which I HATE!

You know, a couple more revelations like this, which are the exact opposite to my 'tastes' as a Superman fan, and i'm gonna have to just stick my head in the sand until it comes out and then just deal with it as it is.

If it is Zod, it's gonna make for one heckuva revenge battle. Mad Supes beats the crap out of Zod and is about to kill him...until he hears Jonathan Kent's voice......

Superman: My name is Clark Kent, you killed both of my fathers, now you must die.

I think this is a good thread to avoid now, with entire pages just filled with spoiler tags. I don't trust myself to have the willpower to avoid giving in to temptation and clicking for much longer.

I just hope that
they don't give Clark a Peter Parker/Bruce Wayne Guilt/Traumatic inspired reason as to why he eventually becomes Superman.

Clark should become Superman not because out of guilt or the death of a loved one, but simply because he wanted to help people. Just like Steve Rogers, Clark helps people because that's how he already is.

I don't think it will.

Remember that the death of his father was used in a different way. Not as motivation but as point of humility. Even with all of his great power he is not a god. He has limits and those limitations were made very evident when he was powerless to save the person he loved most from the inevitable grasp of death.

Can't see video, what is it?
It's a shot of a tombstone..camera zooms in on it until you can barely make out that it says jonathan kent, then the name is highlited in black.

if Lois is at the funeral would she know that Clark is Superman

nvm wrong thread.

Lol I know, lost that battle yesterday....

I love spoilers. Eat 'em up. And it never seems to actually spoil the movie for me. Just like reading a book before seeing the movie based on the book. As long as the story telling is good, knowing the plot doesn't ruin it. Not everyone has to rely on M. Night style surprises.

Oh man I read some of the spoiler tags and I hope that they are just guesses at the plot. I think I have to avoid this thread for awhile.

Not sure if these words belong in the same sentence anymore. What a letdown he has become. Post Sixth Sense>downhill.

Better look at The Shield
