Has the gradual yellow tint on the s been revealed or commented on officially yet? I think it has something to do with Kal's exposure to the sun's rays -- it glows from faint yellow to bright like we've seen elsewhere, so at the end of the film we have our classic superman "S" colours or something?

I think that's overthinking it. Much like the rest of the suit, due to the construction and materials used, the yellow backing of the shield appears different in almost every image, due to how it's lit, how it's photographed or filmed, and also how it's presented. Photoshop is a hell of a drug, and Warners might intentionally be downplaying any overtly bright depictions of the character to play to the general public's desire for a less happy-go-lucky Superman. I really don't think the variations in the yellow's appearance has anything to do with his power level, sunlight absorption, or anything like that.
