Columbus? Oh no! Please, not this one! Though his visual style kicked ass, characters were not developed well and the whole movie was like Home Alone 4! He is the worst Potter director and I hope he will never come back.

I believe you have said you haven't read the books, so keep in mind it wasn't really Columbus' fault. The first two books were written strictly as children books. Then when the popularity built and as Harry grew with his audience, Rowling took the books to the next level with POA. I believe Columbus could've done one of the later movies really well. Like you said, his visual style is awesome and he was really loyal to the source material.

I started reading from the Champber of Secrets, which actually was very dark for children book. The problem was his thoughts about how faithful should the adaptation be. From what I saw in Harry Potter 2, he didn't explain some storylines, which were clearly described in the book. And, visual style isn't the first thing in the movie, it's all about storytelling how much do you care about your storylines. Columbus just tries to use his Home Alone formula, he even changed the look of Potter making him look like another Macaulay Culkin (especially i hated his haircut, in the book it was said that Harry had some kind of hair stood on end). Maybe it's me, but I was very disappointed with his version of wizard's world.

Matt is right. The first two movies are the best ADAPTATIONS, but at the same time, the worst movies of the series because they are also the worst books.
