Ratner reveals Superman conflict
Director Brett Ratner has revealed he quit the new 'Superman' film because he didn't want a well-known star like Tom Cruise in the lead role. Ratner claims he wanted an unknown actor to play Superman in the new film and clashed with studio bosses who wanted a well-known star to make sure the film was a box-office success.
"I couldn't see Tom Cruise as Superman ... or any movie star playing that, so I wanted an unknown," he said.
Ratner said he wanted to spend the film's budget on expensive special effects, so the studio turned to 'X-Men' director Bryan Singer instead.
He added: "Bryan figured out a way how to do the movie for much less money and that's why it was deserving of getting an unknown to play it."
Ratner added he thought he'd blown his chances of helming a super hero movie when he walked away from 'Superman'.
But when Singer, director of the first two X-Men' films, moved to the 'Superman' project, Ratner was offered the chance to make 'X-Men: The Last Stand'.
And Ratner says he couldn't turn the chance down because he regarded 'X-Men', 'Superman' and 'Batman' as the three "ultimate super-hero" franchises.
