I'm not familiar with the stage play. But the feel I got from the trailer is that both musicals Tom Hooper has made are basically about characters with crappy lives.

I guess the closest he got to doing a musical was this one scene in Sucker Punch.

The Phantom of the Opera didn't really have that crappy of a life. Sure half his face looks horrible, but he gets to live in the basement of an opera house and he doesn't pay rent or utilities. That's a win.

Exactly. Everyone who's seen Phantom of Opera always tells themselves, "That guy in the mask totally has it all together."

Man, I wonder sometimes what would have happened if we'd gotten the Phantom movie that they were going to do with Michael Crawford. Oh well.

What gets me about the Cats design is that it would have been so easy to fix. Just make the ears bigger, put 'fur' on the sides of their heads (like the stage wigs) to hide the fact they don't have human ears and tweak the faces a little to look more feline. That's it. Just slapping human faces on the CGI bodies without any changes other than adding some barely visible whiskers just looks lazy and sloppy.

I can't believe they showed the current design to Hooper and he said it looked fine when it's clearly bizarre and disturbing.

they're all CG except the faces. The three minute BTS video showed them all in mocap suits.

CGI

The reason is because of the uncanny valley, not sure if you've ever seen the stage show but everyone is just done up in makeup and bodysuits. So its very obvious its just a dude or a dame in a suit.

Here its folks in a suit with a weird CGI blending of the actors own facial features and added CGI cat features. So when you look at it, it both doesn't look real enough to fool you while still looking somewhat real enough to make it unsettling.

Well, yes and no. It's a CGI blending of human bodies with fur and cat tails and human faces with no alterations on human shaped heads with small cat ears and no human ears.

My big problem is they don't really have any cat facial features beyond some barely visible whiskers. That's it. So of course they look super weird because they're just human heads with cat ears and the human ears removed.

Little girls are going to like this. Comparatively few feature films seem to cater to this market.

This is basically the Frozen/Wicked market. Little girls, moms, lonely single women and pathetically ageing gay men like me.
