Tom Hooper to direct movie of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Cats'

I just can't wait till tonight's Golden Globes. Rick Gervais is going to skewer this movie.

This is probably the most bizarre movie I've seen ever. Like literally nothing made sense. But I'm glad I still watched it despite the reviews because of how bizarre it is. The slapstick comedy got me but there are a lot of unintentionally hilarious moments in this movie.

Judi Dench telling the audience that a cat is not a dog is so... At first I was like ???? But now I thought about this, this is like the best what the f movie I've seen in a long time. Its soo bad, its good. I don't know what a Jellybean cat is. The street lights are all open and there wasn't a glimpse of human except in the beginning. The two cats have magic for some reason. I don't know why they sent Jennifer Hudson into the heaven? At first maybe to fill her nine lives, but she just disappeared and the cats including Catneto were like auditioning to Judi Dench to be send into the heavens? And they sang every minute of the film.

The songs were nice though.

VFX Society Slams Oscar Jokes About ‘Cats,’ Says CGI ‘Will Not Compensate for a Story Told Badly’

Frankly it's kind of really insulting of James Corden and Rebel Wilson and The Academy to do that given how much over time and unpaid work went into the movie by the grunts of the VFX team because the movie had to be pushed out in time for The Oscars knowing damn well it wasn't getting a single one.

It's one thing for internet Randos to do it, it's another to parade around on stage at an event meant to celebrate the art of film in front of thousands of their peers and make jokes about them. These artists weren't paid the hundreds of thousands of dollars Rebel Wilson & James Corden were to do this film to take it on the chin and they sure as crap did much more work than them.

Just this year the company who did the VFX for Lion King & Sonic was literally forced to close when the bills they racked up paying people to do the work the studios wanted them to do outspent the money they were paid to do the work and you've got studios who don't give a crap about that.

I'm sorry, it's impossible for me to take seriously the VFX people having a cow over that joke. Are they the only people in Hollywood unable to take a joke at their own expense? You don't see any actors complaining when Ricky Gervais roasts them. Or, you know, the entire existence of the Razzies.

It's like me saying that the writing in Suicide Squad was terrible, and the writer's union flaming me for saying that all writers are bad.

I mean their CGI wasn't very good...

‘Cats’ Sweeps Razzie Awards With Six Wins Including Worst Picture – Deadline

As a result of the coronavirus crisis, the Razzies were, like just about every other event, forced to cancel their big weekend plans for a live Los Angles ceremony (originally it was to have been streamed), so instead winners were just announced Monday via press release.

Universal’s widely derided musical Cats (full disclosure: I kinda liked it, so sue me) swept the “honors” with six wins including Worst Picture, Worst Supporting Actor and Actress (James Corden and Rebel Wilson, respectively), Worst On Screen Combo, Worst Screenplay and Worst Director for Tom Hooper.

Rambo: Last Blood took two including Worst Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel. John Travolta took Worst Actor for a combo of two films, The Fanatic & Trading Paint. Hilary Duff won Worst Actress for The Haunting of Sharon Tate. Eddie Murphy , a frequent Razzie target, returned to good graces winning the Razzie Redeemer Award for Dolemite Is My Name.

I thought they were hilarious

Lack.
Of.
Vision.
That about sums up what went wrong. When you've got a director who lacks a certain kind of imagination needed to bring singing antropomorphic characters to the big screen, that's what happens. Tom Hooper was a wrong choice for the material.
You can not go into such a project by just putting on green leotards on actors and dancers, and thinking that you'll somehow figure it out in post.
Which is what's wrong with many modern movies.

Should've approached it more like how you might approach a Thundercats movie.

The characters in this musical are not really cats as such. They're an anthropomorphic cat-like race of people like Thundercats. So their faces shouldn't just be pasted onto cat bodies etc. I think the actual musical does it a lot better with people dressed like cats and in makeup, and it looks more realistic. Do they look like real cats? No. But you understand that they're cat people.

Even looking at Beast in various X-Men films would've been the way to go.

From what I've seen of it, it's not the content of the songs and dancing that's the problem as much as the overall design. I think it would have worked so much better if they'd just stuck to the general stage design of the cats and simply adjusted it so they didn't look like costumes. Keep the large wigs and facial cat makeup that made them actually look like cats. I think the big problem with the movie design is the heads are just human heads with the ears removed and cat ears put on top, which is never going to look right.

Talk about leaving money on the table.

I hope this is a lesson for anyone who comes to adapt a Starlight Express movie. Don't stick human faces on trains. Keep them like the musical where they look like armoured superheroes on roller skates.

Even comic costumes are mostly inspired by things in nature or inanimate objects. Ant Man doesn't look like an actual ant but wears a costume with an ant motif and accessories. Same with Batman.

If Hooper wasn’t compromised in his vision, the film would’ve been 10% better.

I'm honestly surprised the studio even let them show butholes in the first place. Especially with Taylor Swift slinking around all sexy. Even if Hooper intended it to only be a play on the joke about cats always sticking their butts in people's face. You cant have Taylor Swift as a sexualized furry slinking around and dancing and showing her butthole. That's one weird step too far.

And considering Hooper's sensibilities, that crazy ****er probay had the actors real buttholes digitally scanned and put on the cats.

What's Hooper known for? What else has he made?
