EXCLUSIVE: Newcomer George Blagden joins Tom Hooper’s “Les Miserables” as Grantaire
by Linda Ge

Casting is quickly firming up on Tom Hooper’s adaptation of international blockbuster musical “Les Miserables”, but while some of the major roles are still being negotiated, a strong supporting character has been finalized. Little known stage and screen actor George Blagden has been cast as student revolutionary Grantaire, the actor’s reps confirmed to us today.

Blagden will share the screen with the likes of Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried.

Blagden will share most of his screentime with Eddie Redmayne and Aaron Tveit, whose Marius and Enjolras are close friends and fellow revolutionaries alongside Grantaire, who Valjean encounters in the second act of the story. It was also revealed recently that “Les Mis” original London cast members Colm Wilkinson (Valjean) and Frances Ruffelle (Eponine) will have small roles in the film. Wilkinson will play a Bishop Valjean meets in the beginning of his journey who sets him on the right path with his kindness, and Ruffelle will play a “fabulous ****e” during one of Fantine’s ensemble musical numbers, “Lovely Ladies.” Meanwhile, Taylor Swift, Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter still remain in negotiations for the roles of Eponine, Thenardier and Mme Thenardier, respectively. Those deals better come together fast, with rehearsals beginning this week and filming set for March, all towards a release date of December 7, 2012.

Blagden is a neophyte to the big screen, with his first credits set for release this year, in “Clash of the Titans” sequel “Wrath of the Titans” with Sam Worthington and Liam Neeson, and indie “The Philosophers”, starring some of the hottest rising talent including Rhys Wakefield, Sophie Lowe, “Harry Potter”‘s Bonnie Wright and “W.E.”‘s James D’Arcy. “Les Miserabls” should be a nice breakout for Blagden, a tenor who has also appeared on stage in “Kiss Me Kate”, “The Blue Room” and more.

Best news of the day! :awesome:

The Taylor Swift bullet has officially been dodged. Samantha Barks is playing Eponine.

Much better.

That must have been something if it was a surprise to her!

So Taylor visited Mackintosh's office last week - either she backed out because of her schedule (she's touring in March) or he told her she wasn't going to be in it. Wonder if we'll ever get the whole story.

Amazing news. She was perfect in the 25th Anniversary Concert. :inlove:

How awesome was that for her to get the news like that?

I doubt we'll ever really know what that was all about.

But I love this news.

Thank goodness! Best news I've heard all day.

I gotta say as well, other than Enjolras, this is the best casting the movie has thus far.

:applaud

However, I'm surprised at this news since it pretty much came out of left field. I also had assumed that if Swift is somehow not available, then Lea Michele would get the part because she had auditioned for the role aggressively and played Eponine at one time. I've never heard of Samantha Barks so I'll assume that she's a Broadway vet who's also a newcomer in Hollywood. At any rate, this is terrific news. I now look forward to this movie even more.

I almost got into a fistfight at an ATM today, but this totally makes up for it.

This is exactly what the role of Eponine is supposed to do: introduce the movie going audience to an actress not too many people are familiar with, and giving her a big career boost.:up::up::up::up::up::up:

barks....perfect. loved her in the 25th, going to love her in the movie. cast is super stacked now. just give em best ensemble.

Maybe this role can propell Elizabeth Bark to become a new star, much like what POTO did for Emmy Rossum.

If that really was a surprise announcement to her, that was a boss move.

And they got to publicize it and take the focus completely off of the whole Taylor Swift debacle.

I do want to know what exactly happened that went from offering the role to Swift, to this sudden announcement of casting a relative unknown to act alongside such big stars as Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and Amanda Seyfried.

Honestly that Swift rumor might've originated from her camp to give her buzz or pressure them to give her the role but it backfired since the rumor was met with negativity rather than positivity. Publicists do that all the time to raise their client's profile or to give them leverage.

It won't surprise me if it does. Eponine is the baitiest female role. She's a scene stealer. If she lives to the expectations, I see a Best Supporting Actress mod coming her way next year.

What an awesome way to find out that you just got chosen for a career-changing role!

I agree with kvc5 - Swift may never have actually gotten an offer for Les Miz. That was always just a strong rumor that never got confirmed. Seems like she was definitely one of the candidates being looked at, but we may never know how close she actually came to the role.

Either way, this choice is leagues better, and I feel like this completes a damn near perfect cast (still worried about Crowe's voice, but I AM super excited to see him as an antagonist to Jackman).

Well, I doubt Crowe would do a worse job as Javier than what Gerald Butler did as Phantom; I'm still perplexed on why ALW picked him and his rather average voice to play such an important role in the movie. Patrick Wilson was alot better by comparison.

Here's a video of the onstage announcement and an interview with Barks.

Definitely, I got chills just from the crowd applauding her. :hrt:

Considering the backlash the Swift rumor got and the positive reviews that Barks has been getting for playing the role, especially in the 25th Anniversary concert, which pulled in a lot of money at the box-office(it was shown live at movie theaters world-wide), she's a wise gamble. And it's not like it's a main character, it's a supporting character. Most studios while hesitant are more open to casting unknowns in supporting rather than starring roles.

What I think happened is Swift *did* get an offer - she was seen at Mackintosh's offices last week. However, I think scheduling couldn't be worked out because she has a tour in March to do and is presenting at the Grammy Awards in a few weeks, among other things. I think she had the "scheduling conflict" reason and had to drop out. In an article interviewing Samantha's family, it was revealed that she had also auditioned many times, and once Taylor dropped out and rehearsals are now under way and filming starts in a month, they had to cast someone and the audition process had to end.

That's my scenario anyway!

I misread this threa'ds title. Knowing fully there was Les Miserable film in production but I thought the title of this thread read:

Tobe Hooper to take on Les Miserables.

And let's just say that'd, that'd be a very different movie.
