We knew that, right danoyse? :woot: Can't wait to hear "Who Am I?" and "Bring Him Home", heck, all of them.....

I'm excited for the whole thing too, though I'm still concerned about Russel Crowe as Javert. I know he's got a band and has been in The Rocky Horror Show, but Les Mis is much more vocally demanding.

If you watched the video to the end, you can see how far away the video person was when he did the video and you could still hear his voice from that far away.

Yes, we did! (and we have the ticket stubs to prove it)

I can't wait to hear him sing "Bring Him Home". That song destroys me every time I've heard it onstage.

I just had a thought. If this is where I think it is (the end of "What Have I Done?"), did they change the key? It sounds lower than other renditions I've heard.

I know absolutely nothing about music, so whatever way it's sung is fine with me, but someone posted this at the Broadway board:

That last note on 'begiiiiiiin' is a G#. This means Hugh is singing Valjean's Soliloquy a half step lower than in the show. I wonder if it's been lowered to match Russell Crowe's suicide song.

***
I refer to the show key that Colm Wilkinson, Gary Morris, and Alfie Boe sang it in. I don't know how many times the key has been changed for official productions, but Hugh is singing it a half step lower than it's been most famously sung.

Maybe Hugh couldn't hit the actual note? If that's the case, I worry for "Bring Him Home". That song's in A.

Jackman's a fantastic singer. I noticed the different note, too. The actual note is a bit higher, but it doesn't always sound great coming from everyone. I've always found that song a tad awkward as a piece of music, especially toward the end.

Damn. Jackman can belt it.

Yes he can. And everyone will know it soon.

He's been wanting to do a movie musical for so long - he's had the rights to "Carousel" for years but he can't get a studio to finance it. If it couldn't be that, I'm so glad it's the number one musical in the world with all those gorgeous songs and character changes.

Are they going to age him up as the story progresses? It's been a while since I've read Les Mis, but isn't Valjean an old man at some point?

Yes. The story starts in 1815 and ends in 1832-33ish.

Les Mis and Phantom are two of my favorite musicals, so I'm very happy to see both being made into movies. However, I have a feeling that Les Mis is going to be better than Phantom's adaptation and probably all other movie adaptations in recent years as well. If Chicago can win the Oscar for Best Picture, I don't why Les Mis won't have a chance to win it.

Les Miz will kick the Phantom's ass, because for Les Miz they chose a male lead who can actually sing. If you haven't seen the Phantom yet, don't buy the DVD, buy the DVD of the Royal Albert Hall performance instead.

That's exactly what I did.

Agreed (and I actually really like the Phantom movie - though the 25th Anniversary has now taken over my 'watchlist' for when I need a visual 'Phan' fix *lol*). If only for the reason that Schumacher is no where near Les Mis. (I didn't mind Gerard too much as Phantom, he fit what they were going for... I blame more Schumacher for wanting to go that direction and for making everything so bright (especially for the time period - that lair was way to well lit) and colorful - except for Masquerade which was supposed to be colorful and was instead more monochromatic - for a story that's supposed to be this kind of dark tale).

Anywho... I digress. I wonder what type of soundtrack they'll release. Whether they'll do a full soundtrack with every song, or just selections.

It's too bad a lot of the good "old-timey" musicals are basically considered box office kryptonite and may never be seen on film. It makes me angry that I likely will never get the original good cut of The Fantasticks on DVD (not the butchered one currently available).

Agreed. I would love to see a new movie version of Man of La Mancha (one of my favorite musicals) or Kiss Me Kate. But they won't happen.

I do love that some shows are now being filmed for Fathom Events and being released on DVD. The final performance of Rent is so much better than the movie, and I enjoyed seeing Memphis again on PBS a few weeks ago.

Of course that was also the same London trip when I could have seen Hugh in Oklahoma and didn't go. Still kicking myself for that one.

I can top that: Wicked came to Toronto for a limited engagement in 2005, WITH THE ORIGINAL CAST. I chose not to go because money was tight; shortly after the show ended I got a great job and would have been able to easily afford it if I had paid on my credit card. Arrgh!
