Tom Hooper to take on Les Miserables

It breaks my heart to think of one single note of music being cut. :csad: What I wish/hope is that they film absolutely everything, make some cuts for time as needed, and then release an extended edition on DVD and Blu-Ray at some point in the future.

The Thénardier Waltz Of Treachery, Dog Eats Dog, Drink With Me... And to a lessor extent, Castle On A Cloud...

Of course, all those will make it into the film. :/

They really need to keep Castle on the Cloud. That's probably one of the most thematically important songs in the show (remember whose picture that is on the poster).

Dog Eat Dog, Turning, the Waltz of Treachery and one of the "Valjean self-torture" songs they can cut. Lovely Ladies can just be truncated (like what they did to Little People). The Look Down reprise can be cut down to just instrumental music over scenes of poverty in Paris.

As sacreligious as it sounds, if they really HAD to, I feel they could cut the first Do You Hear The People Sing. Think about how powerful that song was if they just used it at the end.

Flaming begins in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...

I think the first "DYHTPS" adds to the power of the finale reprise but that's just me. "Turning" is in, a little girl has been cast for the "Who will wake them? No one ever will..." part of that song. The "Look Down" reprise is in, at least the first verse is in for sure. As for shortening stuff, right now no one knows.

I'm with Dove, the first DYHTPS adds to the power of the finale.

But I agree with the rest.

This is cool - it's from someone who played a convict. There are four sketches, working backwards. That last sketch is great and has a description of what they filmed and how they did it.

http://kiereyles.tumblr.com/post/22772510528/to-start-this-blog-i-decided-to-upload-some

To start this blog i decided to upload some sketches i done on set at Portsmouth dry dock - nothing to do with mythology which this blog is intended.

Sketches on set for the British musical film, Les Miserables starring Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman (2012). The followings drawings are of convict extras waiting to be called to shot (1)

Sketches 2 and 3 don't have descriptions, but here's sketch 4:

In the film, Les Miserables I was a convict in dry dock in Portsmouth with lots of others pulling in (suppose to be a ship) Waist height in cold water, dirted up looking worse for wear and wearing hand and leg shackles, with a wave and wind machine blowing in our faces. Rain pouring down. Ready. Action! Loud depressing music booming over the speakers, with our hands ready on thick, wet, rope. A cold shiver ran down my body - hoping this shot would be brilliant as we all wait silent gripping the rope waiting for our cue. NOW!

PULL. PULL. HAND. HAND. PULL. PULL. HAND. HAND. PULL. PULL. Singing ‘Look down, look down were here until we die.’ ‘Look down, look down there’s twenty years to go.’ And so.

We were not acting - our lives were rubbish and it just consisted of just pulling that rope. The water seemed to raise to chest height for some reason. After 7 takes with big blisters on my hands I crawled up the wet dock steps exhausted.

Welp, sounds like a little fall of rain fell today. RIP Eponine :csad:

Alistair Brammer @alistairbrammer
Amazing wet day on set. There was nothing little about that fall of rain. Sooooaked

Oh, and also

I hope the actors went to their TRAILER after that long tiring day. It IS difficult to film scenes in the rain. It probably seems like I'm going ON and on about this, but YOU wouldn't like it either. Did they use some form of TUBE for the rain, I wonder?

It's not going to stay up too long I bet. Meanwhile:

Russell Crowe ‏ @russellcrowe
tied up, beaten... shoot me now or shoot me later, every schoolboy to his sport, death to each and every traitor... #lesmis

Keep in mind, this is Russell Crowe we're talking about. This likely has nothing to do with Les Miz, and could be just from his real life.

Hugh Jackman sends Mother's Day greetings from the set:

Listening to those first three, I agree with you on how those could be cut and have the film not lose any of its impact.

But, like Pink Ranger said, "Castle on a Cloud" is such an important song to the film that it shouldn't be cut.

I always thought the picture of the young Cosette on Les Miserables' posters and merchandises came from the scene where she sang "Castle on a Cloud", so I can't see why they would ever contemplate cutting it.

I love the heartwrenching love song "On my Own" by Eponine.

I hope it's in the movie. I will be very disappointed if it's cut from the movie.

On My Own won't be cut, no way. That song practically defines Eponine.

Truthfully, I don't think anything is going to be cut. I've been following the progression faithfully and from what I can tell, all the songs are in there. I think all that's left is the Thenardier stuff, some or all of the Cosette/Marius/JVJ stuff, and the stuff with the students and JVJ (next week is the last for the students).

The unofficial anthem of highschool talent shows across the western world? No way they'd cut it.

Here's a spoiler for "Who Am I?" from someone at IMDB:

A friend of mine was an extra for that scene. I don't know where the first section of Who Am I was shot, but she said Hugh enters the church during 'my soul belongs to God I know'. It was filmed at night, and she said there was fake snow outside. It is actually an old church within the historic dockyard converted to a courtroom.

It was sung live, with a piano playback and the note at the end of 24601 was not lowered - apparently he hit the note perfectly. My friend said that she thought an actor from the stage show played the wrongly accused convict.

She said she thinks the convict was Jeff Leyton. Also - Valjean doesn't rip open his shirt. He sings 'and so Your Honour, you see it's true' to the judge.

Reminder: please do not post any bootlegged clips of the Cinemacon trailer.
