As Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator, he fought in many a gruesome battle.
Now Russell Crowe has taken to the battlefield once more to film the June Rebellion in Les Misérables, yesterday afternoon.
The 48-year-old was in amongst the crowds as Greenwich, London, became transformed into a distressed corner of Paris, France.
The Australian star was sporting a grey stubble as he got down to filming the big scene where the lower classes finally fought back against the ruling authority.
Crowe can be seen running through the streets as riots break out across the city and disorder and mayhem turn the area into a dangerous place.
The actor stars as villainous Inspector Jarvert who is on a mission to imprison convict Jean Valjean, played by Hugh Jackman.
Wearing a black cap and a long coat with a waist coat and trousers, Crowe runs through the streets as guns are fired and swords are swung around him.
British actor Eddie Redmayne was also on set and he plays the role of young rebel fighter Marius Pontmercy.
The 30-year-old managed to look rather dashing despite doing a lot of grimacing on set as he shot at the enemy from a safe distance.
The Birdsong actor was dressed in blue trousers with a matching waistcoat and also wore a long dark purple jacket. In between filming Redmayne was seen adjusting the collar of his stiff period drama costume.
While the majority of extras did their best to act scared and confused during the pivotal scene, one or two of them can be seen smiling perhaps at the fact they get to be chased by Russell Crowe.
Hugh Jackman was not spotted during filming yesterday but he is a central figure to the story.
The Wolverine star is playing Jean Valjean, a poor man on the run from the police after he was released from prison after a 19 year stretch for stealing bread for his family.
He is being pursued by Crowe's Inspector Javert, who released Valjean on parole, but then later decided to dedicate his life to imprisoning him again.
The two Australian men may be enemies onscreen but they have been getting on famously off camera.
According to reports, Hugh keeps asking to re-shoot fight scenes with the Gladiator star because he likes hitting him.
A source told The Sun newspaper: 'The crew find it hilarious as Crowe would obviously sweep the floor with Jackman in real life.
'Hugh keeps ribbing Russell and winding him up but he's been getting his own back by calling Hugh a twirlie, which is showbiz speak for a singer/dancer.'
Jackman was also going down well with the crew after he reportedly bought every single worker a lottery ticket.
The popular star showed just how generous he was by spending over £250 on scratchcards after the rain stopped filming last weekend.
A crew member told the Sun: 'Hugh said he needed to go to the shops then came back with a wad of scratch cards and handed them out to everyone.'
It isn't the first time Jackman has splashed out on lottery tickets, as he did the same thing every week while filming blockbuster Real Steel, last year.
He said at the time: 'It's my way of paying taxes. The very first film I did in America, I was embarrassed to say two months in that I didn't know half of the crew's names.
'So I thought that on a Friday afternoon I'll whip by and buy lottery tickets for everyone and hand them out. I say it's an Australian tradition, but it's not.'
