You can read all about it here: http://www.ign.com/top/avengers

Be warned though, the list is horrible. Spiderman, Wolverine and Hulk are WAY too close to the top. Surprised to see Thor #1. Cap A seemed like the most obvious choice. Storm's been an Avenger for 2 minutes yet is higher than longtime members like Quicksilver and Black Widow

I've said before that the Avengers are a different team when Thor's not there. He leaves a major void that can't be filled by any of the other powerhouses that the franchise has had in the past. You can make the same argument for Cap I guess but they were able to find solid leaders in any of Cap's absences, like Jan or Captain Marvel/Photon. My point is they are basically interchangeable at 1 or 2 in any of these "lists".

Spidey, Wolverine, Hulk and Bucky have no business being in the top 10. Pym, Jan and Wanda not being there in the top 10 is a massive FAIL by IGN. Panther is a little too high at number 10, he's more top 20 material.

Eh, f**k these lists anyway. IGN's credibility lost me a long time ago anyway.

I like modern Thor, but he was a pretty Hollow character in the Avengers books for a LONG time.

That list is the biggest piece of garbage ever..really...Vision that low? Vision is the first character i think of in Avengers...he was the only guy in the character box for like the whole 70s, he has no real validity outside the Avengers. Even less so than hawkeye.

it's like 3rd graders made this list.

IGN almost never makes good lists, so I'm not surprised that they screwed this one up too.

IGN does make bad lists.

And I'm usually one to put my personal preferences aside for the popular choice, but even looking at it as objectively as possible, they're usually way off.

1. Captain America
2. Iron Man
3. Thor
4. Hawkeye
5. Ant-Man
6. Wasp
7. Quicksilver
8. Scarlet Witch
9. Vision
10. Luke Cage

Something like that would have to be the Top 10. And Cage is just to be nice to Bendis. :o

9. Wonder man
10. Widow

See, you can rearrange it a little but the Top 10 is pretty much universal.

The 1990's really was a killer for the Avengers...it was not a super priority for marvel during the x-book craze. Even still the low sales surprise me.

I can't really get much from those #'s though.

I know comics are a lot more to produce nowadays, but at 2.99-3.99 range , thats a lot of bread Bendis has made marvel.

You'd have to figure inflation into it. Comics were about $2 - $2.25 during Busiek's run. Plus Marvel did those 100 page Monster issues that were around $3. Back in the 90's they were a buck even.

When I think Avengers I think:
Captiain America
Thor
Iron Man
Vision
Scarlet Witch
Wasp
Pym
Hawkeye
Wonder Man
Those are the core Avengers in any series for me. Sure there are characters like Black Panther, Black Knight Sersi, She-Hulk Black Widow and Beast that are cool But without those core characters it ain't an Avengers book. Hulk, Wolverine and Spidey aren't known for being Avengers. They're solo heroes.

I think Wolverine is more known for being an X-man than a solo hero.

This wasn't an IGN list, this was an IGN readers list. Which doesn't make it any better.

I get what they're doing, but I would've left out all of the one or two issue members. Reed Richards or any of the Fantastic Four (except maybe the Thing now) shouldn't be considered for this list.

Then the list starts off alright with people like Moon Knight, Mockingbird and the second Spider-Woman. Red Hulk over Black Widow is quite a surprise though, as her placement at #42 is anyway. Seeing Storm at #37 just acknowledges the fact that this was voted on the basis of the characters, rather than their relation to the Avengers.

Yay, Quasar. Ugh, Bullseye. Venom!? Twice!?

Hurray for the X-Men!!!
5. Wolverine
7. Beast
37. Ororo Munroe aka Storm

What? Why are Spider-Man (the most useless Avenger) and Wolverine high up there? And what's with all those poor choices?

Top 15 Avengers as I'd arrange them:
1. Iron Man
2. Captain America (1 & 2 swap at times)
3. Thor
4. Ant-Man/Pym
5. Wasp/Van Dyne
6. Hawkeye/Barton
7. Black Widow/Romanoffa
8. Vision
9. Scarlet Wicth
10. Ms. Marvel/Danvers

And I would put Jarvis much higher than Spider-Man, even Sentry could be listed higher
This wasn't an IGN list, this was an IGN readers list.
At least it clears the staff there

Lists are, by and large, usually subjective, especially ones that are left up to the voting public. Thus everyone is entitled to their opinion. That being said...

What the hell is this crap?!

Seriously, I like a lot of these characters on the list, but many, many characters should not be this high on the list compared to other characters. I mean, Spidey and Wolverine, great characters they may be (with Spidey being one of my favorite superheroes of all time), should NOT be in the top 10 Avengers, especially over the likes of Hank Pym, Vision, Wasp, and Scarlet Witch who have had FAR more impact that resulted in fundamental ramifications. And with all due respect, the Dark Avengers shouldn't even be on the list since those guys are VILLAINS. And we have Flash Thompson/Venom, who while I like, making the list over more classic characters, even though he just joined Secret Avengers, and even Mac Gargan/Venom, who, IMO, was an absolute flop as Venom, ranking even higher? And while they at least got the top 3 of Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor right, Cap should be #1 on the list, if only because when you think of the Avengers, he's the first guy who pops into your head. Good grief.

I'm not gonna get worked up by it and neither should anybody else. Like Harlekin said earlier, it's based off of votes from IGN readers. They're probably the same crew of 7th graders that eat up the monthly s**t sandwich Bendis has been feeding them since 2004.

Yeah, I think it's more silly than anything, really. Cause it's pretty evident this list was more or less a list of fans personal favorite Marvel superheroes who, at one time or another, were Avengers as opposed to the best Avengers. Besides, it could have been worse...Sentry could have made the list. :oldrazz:

Nova was pretty high on the list for appearing in 4 issues of Secret Avengers...love my nova and all , but Sentry should rank higher than nova.

Guys, I think you're forgetting a crucial aspect. This list is obviously a quality over quantity deal, judging the heroes by their accomplishments while on the team, and not simply how long their tenure was.

Compared to the others, Spidey and Logan have contributed more than enough to make up for the decades they weren't on the team, easily topping members like Vision and Witch and Silver, and giving others like Cap, Thor, and Iron a good run for their money.

And the fact that I'm not listing these outstanding achievements and contributions doesn't mean they don't exist or that they're few in number and merit, but that there are simply so many that the character limit for this post would be broken, and sent into a drunken depression for not being able to match their greatness.

Think back these last ten years and I think you'll find that my assessment is correct.

Honestly.

That is the wrong Captain Marvel, also where is Tigra? I can't belive Venom of any sort is considered part of the team, what a joke and to put Bullseye there. The person who edited the article should be slapped. There should have been a criteria instead of people conected to the team. Nick Fury? not on the team no matter what the stupid mini said. Also Mar-Vel was an honorary member and that should count. Monica was a great member. She was a decent leader (when Druid wasn't dogging her) and was the heart for the team for a while. Logan and Spiderman are just popularity winners not team value along with Storm. What about Swordsman? He died to keep the Celestial Madonna out of Kang's hand or a nod towards Jocasta. Most likely done by a bunch of newbies.

Beast would always be in my top ten. He was so awesome as an Avenger, and he and Wonder Man are the best buddy duo ever.

Wow. Even I wouldn't rank Thor as the #1 Avenger. Yeah, he's definitely got his own niche on the team, but the team can and has thrived quite well without him for years at a time.

Personally, I'd put Vision as my top Avenger. The team just doesn't seem to have as much of a heart and soul without the Vision there.

Hank Pym's pretty near the top too, in part because of how much the Avengers mean to him. He's not just a character who is on the team a lot; the Avengers are a huge, dominant part of his entire life. The Avengers have made him a better human being, among other things.

I do think Viz should be in consideration...and like I said he has no real exposure outside avengers. (save for the Viz and scarlet witch series ages ago)
