They could've made it Goose's daughter, unless they established in the original that he had a baby son. I can't remember.

Or they could've had Meg Ryan decide to become a pilot.

It would've been a very different dynamic for sure. Not only would she need to deal with probably being the oldest recruit and with all these youngsters, but also being the wife of someone who was Maverick's buddy back in the day.

But then having Meg Ryan as a rookie pilot almost seems like a main plot for a film in itself and the focus would've shifted to her. It would've become almost like "Private Benjamin".

After Mitchell was honored for killing her husband she stole his F-14 manuals and defected only to see the plane retired before any Naval aviators were lost in combat feeling her wrath. So they've started filming over a month ago, and only now they're casting son of Goose? It only seems to have been finalised just now as well. It's not like they're only announcing now. Why aren't we hearing any other cast announcements? What kind of three-person cast is this?

I was hoping to hear news of Meg Ryan (who should be a shoe in), Kelly McGillis and Tom Skerritt, and then all the other young pilots.

Now how did Meg Ryan and Anthony Edwards produce someone like Miles Teller, who looks like neither of them?

Glen Powell, Nicholas Hoult, or maybe Ansel Elgort (yes I know Elgort wasn't a contender as far as we know) would look more plausibly like their son. And I think especially Powell or Elgort could still pull off the cocky protege bit.

Then they could get Kelly McGillis as Charlie Blackwood's mother instead. Maverick could be paying her a visit because her daughter Charlie died some years earlier, and out of respect, and because he had a close relationship with her daughter, Maverick still helps her out. Pete can remark at the family resemblance when he sees photos of the younger Charlie Blackwood and looks at the older Mrs Blackwood.

Meg Ryan can just put her altered features down to aging and poor diet.

She might be more believable as Charlie's mom now though, because people might not see much of the original character when they look at Kelly McGillis now. Unless she wore a curly wig.

I’m not a big fan of Teller but I’m sure he’ll do fine. However I just saw Hereditary and if I can suspend disbelief to the point where I can accept that somehow Toni Collette and Gabriel Byrne had Alex Wolff for a son, then I suppose Anthony Edwards and Meg Ryan could have had Miles Teller.

By "Hollywood" do we mean Cruise as a love interest/wife or ex for Maverick? Baby Goose would get the hot girl or maybe more likely a guy, if it was basic cable TV production, as a romantic partner if this was a Hollywood decision. Being a potential global cinema blockbuster I would expect Baby Goose to be in a woman in the cutaway love scene.

No, I'm saying Hollywood would rather come up with some contrived reasoning rather than have a 'normal' looking 60 year old woman as a love interest for Cruise.

As for Babygoose, if it was me I'd be tempted to make him gay.

Haha, thought that was funny too. Cruise is the freak in this particular comparison, not McGillis. She just looks her age whereas Tom sustains his youth through sucking the blood of the innocent and performing cool rituals to Beelzebub.

Cruise's films don't like to acknowledge that he's in his 50s. And yeah he looks great for his age, but it's just a thing. His junior Russell Crowe calling him a young man in The Mummy.

Let's see if Top Gun 2 will actually acknowledge it.
