So, my wife is a therapist and I had a pretty in depth discussion with her about Trump's behavior and what it all meant. To put it in a nutshell, she says he's developmentally challenged and engages in "Magical Thinking". This is common among children who are still trying to make sense of a world in which things like right, wrong, and what is and isn't real is still being worked out. Basically very young people will just say things that they want to be true and later work out rather it's the case or not. They are essentially testing the world to make sense of it.

She says that for a grown man to engage in this kind of behavior is unusual. This is something that most people have grown out of for many years. Further, this kind of thinking and speaking in adults is often accompanied by self centeredness as experienced by a child and sociopathic behavior.

Kinda makes sense when I think of it in those terms.
