Twilight of Asgard: the SURTUR thread

For the first time we see Surtur i would love to have the same feeling as i had when Balrog appeared in LOTR. That was just an amazing introduction and insane realization of what type of absolute evil they we're dealing with.

I would't mind at all him looking also like Balrog. And i would love to see Odin being the Gandalf in their scene. Like... "Run you fools!" type of warning only to sacrifice himself for the cause. Imagine that... it would be absolutely epic.

This screams Surtur vs Odin.

I think it would be smart of Marvel to have a taste of Surtur in each trailer they release.
Gradually gaining more importance as the release of the movie comes close. If they could catch that magic from the comics in each trailer it would be surely something that would make the fans got nuts and would build a lot of conversation and hype everywhere about what that meant.

I mean of course the "DOOM" moment from the comics. The anticipation and feeling of something massive and evil coming for your characters.

In the first trailer i would like to just have a "DOOM" sound effect. Just a small taste but something that would make everyone wonder what the hell that was all about.

Then on the second trailer they could give more "meat" to that momentum by adding the sound again and a small taste of what was behind it...

And for the third and final trailer we could have a good look at what we had been anticipating for so long and with that capture a bit of the comics magic.

While that sounds awesome, I am inclined to think Surtur will be the final big monster opposed to the impeding evil

Honestly, I suspect Surtur won't be *that* important in the movie. He'll be one of the apocalypse beasts Hela unleashes. Probably the biggest most powerful one, and certainly an intelligent being. . . but not the driver of the plot. He'll be sort of like Dormammu, important, but more a natural disaster than a character.

I am pretty much certain that this is Surtur's realm. Muspelheim.
You can see the fire, the lava even the fiery faces embedded into the surface of the planet.

I think this is also Muspelheim. However he still has his long hair here. So this in the fist act of the movie.

This looks like Surtur's doing.

Could Sam Neil be voicing Surtur? He could certainly fit the type of actor with gravitas you would expect for that kind of role. That is if Surtur is a full blown character.

There's a foreign youtube channel who has analyzed in detail the scene shown at Comic - Con featuring Surtur. I translated it because i thought it just sounds epic in so many ways.

- Surtur looks very similar to the Balrog but he is about "10 times bigger". He has a face of fire with eyes, horns… he’s almost like a “sea of fire with a lava face”. Surtur is a giant of a beast and Hulk is very small in comparison (“the proportion between both is scary”). Hulk holding a axe with both hands jumps from above at Surtur which is screaming looking up at Hulk. The angle of the shot is identical to this one. The difference is that there’s way more fire/flames everywhere.

I personally am very happy to hear about the similarities with the Balrog which was absolutely perfect in LOTR. I can't wait to see Surtur and i do think we are gonna see that scene described above in one of the next trailers.

so so a youtube channel do you have a link to that ?

I can not wait to see Surtur! Probably the Thor villain that I want to see the most in a movie after the Enchantress.

Hopefully Thor gets to fight Surtur, and he and Odin deliver the defeating blow instead of Hulk finishing off another thor villain.

Man this mobile site is aweful. Kept making my Keyboard lock up. 15 minutes to write tgis damn post lo

I'll post this here for posterity.
Because i just don't see Kevin Feige missing the chance of having this happening in Thor Ragnarok.

Doesnt fit in the MCU. It will probably happen, but it will be a loose adaption

It's happening.

You're right, I'm sure, that it won't be a literal adaptation of the panel, but I'm confident we will see some kind of cinematic interpretation of that basic concept.

Can't wait!

How, exactly, does "Thor, Loki, and Odin, fighting side by side against an apocalyptic foe" 'not fit in the MCU'?

Is it just me or this looks like a giant fire demon walking on Asgard. Check the camera movement and how the "shot" shakes like something big is stomping around. I feel they are trying to convey that and i am "sure" Surtur is the one causing that destruction.

....WAIT the friggin TWILIGHT SWORD!!!!
What if it not only has the power to END all things but CREATE!?

I think that the Twilight Sword will play a role in the movie for sure. But i wouldn't go so far as saying that it's the weapon Thor is looking for... It's Surtur main weapon and the Eternal Flame is in Odin's vault...

Mystical flame that cannot be extinguished. It was stolen from Surtur by Odin, Vili, and Ve Borson at the dawn of time so that Surtur could not light his sword and bring about Ragnarok.

latest

Could be. It doesn't really look like an explosion, for one.
It's most likely Surtur going to get or even lighting up the sword with the Eternal Flame. I would guess that if Surtur does indeed lights the sword on fire then all hell breaks loose.

That fire looks a little small for the eternal flame.
Dimensional thing, one of those objects that can't be physically explained in size in OUR dimension. It's more of a representation.

Here he is. The first look at Surtur.
