Hmmm, well, I liked SR but I was disappointed since it could have been sooo much better than it was. And I like Singer, so I wouldn't give him the boot just yet. But I'd sure like him to learn from this experience.
I was just explaining on BOF why I trust Nolan with the BB franchise so much, and part of it is that he was able to make the transition from small-budget indie movies to a big-production blockbuster without a hitch. Sure, it didn't make HUGE bucks (it wasn't a family movie, so huge bucks are a pretty far-fetched notion to begin with) but he was able to pull in a pretty sweet profit for WB, while pleasing hordes of fanboys/girls at the same time.
My opinion is that Singer was in waaay over his head on SR. He was given LOADS of money and he ran with it, even asking for more when he wanted last-minute CGI. He spent most of it on the effects when he should have looked closely at the story, the characters, and the conflict.
Since the film is good but it has yet to pull a profit for WB (let's face it folks, studios are in it for the $$$), he should find a way to minimize the wasting of money. Like, look over the script carefully so you shoot only what you really want. We were even given production stills of Brandon in the ship, and Brandon as Supes wearing Clark's glasses being conflicted, etc, but none of it was seen in the movie. Dreadful waste.
Don't try to sacrifice story for eye candy. It works for movies like POTC2, since it's all eye candy really, but Supes isn't meant to be ridiculous and campy like that. I want to feel invested in the characters before the conflict hits them. I'm not familiar with Superman's history at all, so I can't speak for the different kinds of villains and whatnot, but even I can tell that the Lex Luthor storyline was weak. I want to feel the gravity of Supes' conflict.
I think Singer can do it, if he can rein himself in. One of my favorite movies is Usual Suspects, and not because the explosions and violence are cool. It's because of the acting, the characters, and the story. I think Singer can do that kind of thing again.
...although I'm not sure if I want him to try it with the plotlines they took with SR.
