Why a Tyler Perry thread? Because both his films & his plays deal out entertainment & serious messages in equal measure. They have a spiritual basis without being overly preachy. They are comedic without being too silly. And they are street-relevent without being stereotypical. And I think it's high time he was recognized for it.

I always liked the plays better then I like the films. But he does deserve some recognition.

The plays ARE better than the films in a lot of ways. Largely b/c he has complete autonomy over the plays & can improvise w/o having to worry about reshoots & editing.

I've only seen the covers, and the trailer for that last one, and they look stupid as hell. Also, one of the things said "as seen on oprah" so I have no respect for them at all.

That, truth be told, was my initial reaction. But there's a lot more substance there.

Those plays be mad funny

I admit I do sometimes fear that. like w/Boondocks, the humor of Tyler's work might overshadow the message it's intended to send out.

Have you see his House of Payne show? Pretty similar to the plays, only with a laugh track. I did go see Family Reunion, only because I saw the play, and I have a thing for Lynn Whitfield(MILF to the extreme, I tells you). I think some just immediately dismiss it because it gives off the vibe of a "black comedy" when it's deeper than that.

Never caught House of Payne. I fully agree that Tyler's work is too easily dismissed due to its surface content. I dismissed him for that reason. He is, IMO, the opposite of what I was talking about on the "touchy subject" thread. A sign of hope.

I liked the scene in the trailer where Madea says "God just saved you, hallelujer."

I'm laughing just thinking about that scene. Although it's kind of a shame that a man who stands-what, 6'8" has to put on a dress to get people to listen to what he has to say.

I remember a discussion my parents and relatives were having about black movies, and I had to let my dad know about the Tyler Perry movies, as he tried to say he hadn't seen any black movies that weren't rated-R recently, and were successful commercially. 'Cause I'm sure everyone was shcoked with Diary of A Mad Black Woman did as well as it did it's first weekend, and continued to do. It's always something when a movie that only cost like 3 to 5 million to make, makes over 30 million its opening weekend. Put that into perspective, the current number one movie in the country only managed to make 9 million its opening weekend, and probably had a much bigger budget.

The idea with movies is to make a profit, something the low budget makers seem to have in spades. You have to spend money to make money, but your ROI should always be at least triple what you put into it.

So because someone you don't respect endorses something you write it off? Sorry but that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. It's like that Penn & Teller show. If you ever watch it, they seem to poll the dumbest people they can find who believe in whatever it is they're trying to de-bunk, thereby discrediting the idea as a whole. Once I realized that I stopped buynig into their bull$h!t.

you gotta have an acquired taste for Tyler Perry's work. Madea's Family Reunion was funny stuff even in the unintentional stuff

Unless you're a white dude that grew up in the south, the scene discussing hot grits would only resonate with a black audience.

"I left some grits cookin' on the stove.....they HOT."

Or another way to put that, if you don't know about Al Green's story, or have never stood over the stove while some grits were cooking & had it pop on you, you can't appreciate the mind-numbing pain that Blair's character was in whtn those grits hit his face.

I will admit that on the surface they look like "Big Momma's House 3". But there's a method to his madness & a reason to his rhyme.

Not really, I tried watching it and turned it off after five minutes. Hes not funny nor is that fat woman he plays.

May have to do w/your taste in humor. Who DO you find funny?

Ive always wanted to watch Family Reunion.

*adds to Netflix queue*
