Plot Summary: Following the success of his previous films "Diary of a Mad Black Woman," "Madea's Family Reunion" and "Daddy's Little Girls," Tyler Perry returns with his fourth feature film, "Why Did I Get Married?" Stepping in front of the camera for the first time since "Madea's Family Reunion," Perry stars alongside a talented ensemble cast that includes Janet Jackson, Malik Yoba, Jill Scott, Sharon Leal, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Denise Boutte and Lamann Rucker.

A big-screen adaptation of Perry's hit stage play of the same title, "Why Did I Get Married?" is an intimate story about the difficulty of maintaining a solid love relationship in modern times. During a trip to the picturesque snowcapped mountains of Colorado, eight married college friends have gathered for their annual seven-day reunion. But the cozy mood is shattered when the group comes face-to-face with one pair's infidelity. As secrets are revealed, each couple begins questioning the validity of their own marriage. Over the course of the weekend, husbands and wives take a hard look at their lives, wrestling with issues of commitment, betrayal and forgiveness as they seek a way forward.

"Why Did I Get Married?" is written and directed by Tyler Perry, and is produced by Reuben Cannon.

Trailer:

Now, I'm figuring that most people will just opt to see We Own The Night this weekend, but I'm curious about people's thoughts on this film.

It looks as generic as all the other guys vs girl romance comedies.

funny how black comedies dont seem to have any white people in them , what world are they living in

I think a more fitting title would have been "Why Do They Keep Letting Tyler Perry Make Horrible Movies?"

Ok, I see where this thread is going and I should've half-expected it.

So, by logic, you must've seen all of his other movies. Why stop now? :p ;)

I probably wont see it in theaters cause it's not the type of thing I want to see on the big screen, but I'll rent it when it comes out. I like Tyler Perry's movies for what they are, there's some generic elements in them, but they have a little spin to them that I like. I think the only thing I didn't like that he was involved with was his TV show, which was just to bland for me to keep interest in.

Honestly I tried watching one of his movies and I had to turn it off after ten minutes and I usually can sit through anything.

What are you talking about?? First of all, this movie is about a group of black couples and secondly there are white people in this movie and thirdly, you act as though only black films are guilty of this, when there are many films and v shows that take place in NY of all places where all we see is white people. Tell me, how many black people did you see in superman returns?? Check yourself.:o

That's because Superman killed all the black people...it's what he does...Superman- Ethnic Cleansing, Done Right

I saw the staged play on DVD last year when I worked at a video store. It wasn't that bad but God Almighty, Tyler Perry is a preachy son of a *****! Some days I think he's really a woman who goes around made up like a man doing impressions of an old woman. His movies aren't even comedies; they're "dramadies" with little actual humor, lots of disturbing character development and so much Christian overtones shoved down your throat, you'll be coughing up rosary beads for a week.

That said, his staged plays were pretty decent and he donated lots of the proceeds to Katrina victims so I have nothing against the man personally. But "House of Payne" was payneful to watch.

For some reason, I cannot stand Tyler Perry. Has he really earned the right to have his name so dominant on adverts, DVD covers, posters above the title? I mean its like novels for chrissakes, where the author's name is larger font size than the damn title! He isn't like Carpenter that has earned that right. He even gives himself top billing. Just for laughs, I counted how many times his name appears on the soundtrack cover to Daddy's Little Girl, a movie in which he doesn't even appear in (AFAIK) and his name appears 9 TIMES!!

He just seems to lack humility and/or be obsessed with seeing his name on stuff. I hate that quality in people. Admittedly I haven't seen much of him "movies", but what I have, they are not funny in the least.

Can't wait for Tyler Perry's Tyler Perry the Movie, Starring Tyler Perry as Tyler Perry.

My only exposure to Tyler Perry is House of Payne...which kinda sucks. So I probably won't see this.

Actually, he kinda has earned that right...he writes, produces, directs, and sometimes stars in all of his own films, which have been extremely profitable at the box office. The first Medea movie only cost $5 million to make, but earned $60 million at the box office. :wow:

That's kind of what happened with Carpenter and the original Halloween, small budget movie that went on to make so much at the box office that it gave him the right to his name over the title.

All of the things he does are completely his, he created these characters, stage plays, DVDs and books, which are enormously popular have made tons of money. His name is part of the product, which is why it's as visible as a best-selling author's name over a book.

I've never seen the movies...but I give the guy credit, he's enormously successful.

A lot of directors can claim the same but you don't see their name plastered all over ads and posters and things like that.

Also, his movies do cater to a certain demographic, and the lack of representation to that demographic is the reason for his success, not necessarily his questionable skill or talent.

And it isn't like he has a whole variety of creativity. Its mostly disfunctional family stuff with his Madea character in the center. Hardly imaginative stuff there.

HAHAHAHAHA :woot: :woot: :woot:
Man oh man did i laugh hard when i read this

ANyways i blame his success on Oprah

i think they made this move as mediocre as possible. much like tyler perrys career.

Mediocre my ass..

I will admit, his name is all over the place. What I don't understand is how is it harming anyone that he's putting his stamp on his own films? I mean, he creates and writes all of his material within his plays and the film adaptations. Why shouldn't he make sure that the credit is due?

and I also think House of Payne is trash.... :p But I actually did give the show multiple attempts to prove me wrong.

A lot of the themes in his plays and movies are entirely generic and non-racial, so whether you like the material or not, don't feel so isolated or inhibited to actually go out to a movie theater to see a movie like this if you're not of dark-complexion.

With that said, I still have VERY LOW expectations for this movie, but I might attend an employee screening tomorrow night and I'll let you guys know how it was when I get back.

HA!!! But yeah, calling out a black film on not having any white people in the cast? Please!

This reminds me of how there were no black people or mexicans in Ghost Rider which took place in Texas.

This doesn't look like a bad movie, but I am just not into Tyler Perry's work. My grandma can't get enough of him, though. I'll have to buy her the DVD when it comes out.

Wait... Malik Yoba is still alive????

So yeah, I saw the preview, funny, it was almost back to back with ANOTHER black family christmas comedy, so, yeah... it supports my 'movie premises come in twos' theory. That said, Tyler Perry is heartwarming and that's more than can be said for a dozen other family comedies I've seen of late.

Also, I didn't know Michael Jai White could actually act... I thought he was just, y'know, like Jean Claude Van Damme... or Steven Segal.

But it's interesting how easy it is for people to dislike something just cuz it's "too black"
