Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?

Tyler Perry is annoying. This should be a straight to DVD film like some of his other films.

Also, I didn't know Michael Jai White could actually act... I thought he was just, y'know, like Jean Claude Van Damme... or Steven Segal.
I'm sure the Mike Tyson TV movie and Universal Soldier 2 didn't help. I didn't for a moment think the man could act until I realized it was him doing a decent job of John Stewart in the Justice League Heroes video game.

Mediocre my ass..

I will admit, his name is all over the place. What I don't understand is how is it harming anyone that he's putting his stamp on his own films? I mean, he creates and writes all of his material within his plays and the film adaptations. Why shouldn't he make sure that the credit is due?

Its waaay beyond 'stamping' your product. It's egotism at its worst. Like I said, there are plenty of other, much more talented filmmakers out there and yes you do see their name, but not 50 times on a marquee or ad material like Perry's. Do we see George Lucas's Star Wars? I mean, Perry's name is part of the title for chrrisakes!

He just hasn't been around long enough or come out with worthy material enough to justify his overindulgent self name-dropping.

Oh, and what does posting his wikipedia article prove? :woot:

"50 times" eh? Yeah, emphasize your opinion through blatant over exaggeration. Yeah, his name appears on the advertisements, but the official titles never have his name on them. It's like when you hear, "From Producer Steven Spielberg", or "Quentin Tarantino presents"...and sure, those are heavy hitters to compare to, but people that know QT or Spielberg, also know who Tyler Perry is.

And I don't think it's up to you or me to decide if his name is or is not worth stamping on his own material. Nonetheless and believe it or not, he's a household name now.

My only exposure to Tyler Perry is House of Payne...which kinda sucks. So I probably won't see this.

don't judge his work from that peice of crap TV show.

I dont understand why people like that.
its WORSE than those chittlin circuit stage plays.

I must admit, I HATE stage plays like "Momma, I wanna sing but my arms are too short to box with God cause my husband is cheating on me" but i saw Madea Goes to Jail and I have to say it was NOT what i was expecting.

then again, I am a vocalist.

Well, QT is awesome sometimes, but I don't really care to know that Death Proof is his 5th film or whatever. That's almost as ridiculous as Perry's excessive name placement (and yeah, the 50 times thing was an exaggeration, but not by much. Like I said earlier, I counted and his name appears NINE TIMES on the soundtrack over).

And I don't think it's up to you or me to decide if his name is or is not worth stamping on his own material. Nonetheless and believe it or not, he's a household name now.

Well, do they know his name because of what he actually does? All most people probably know is that he dresses up like an old, angry woman and goes around acting like a bloody fool. I don't think he's a household name either, not at least with a lot of people although I am not speaking for the black demographic he aims at.

A lot of my movie buff friends agree with me about his name and how he attaches it to everything. And the people that have seen his movies, I haven't heard them say much positive about them.

I can certainly decide about the legitimacy of him overdoing his name placement on things. NO ONE should do that. To me, the guy appears to be an egomaniac. I am sure he doesn't hate seeing his name everywhere on adverts and the like.

funny how black comedies dont seem to have any white people in them , what world are they living in

The same world in which many movies don't seem to have any black people in them.

its not rocket science.

Yeah, I gotta say I do feel like he's been forced down my throat. I've yet to submit until now. I'm kind of interested in this one, I don't know why.

Not trying to take sides in this argument between you and SolidSnakeMGS but a good exageration would be calling him a household name. That might be very well true with African American households but to say it outright for all house holds...........

On another note, I haven't seen any of his films. Are they really that bad, to the people trashing them in this thread? It also doesn't bother me in the least that there are no white people in it since what others have said is true. That black people usually get the shaft a lot in most predominantly(sp?) white films.

Ok, maybe not an over exaggeration on my part, but perhaps more of a "misconception". I will admit that. But, when I said that, notice that I didn't specify any race. I think a lot of people know of him, despite never watching his films for....whatever reason...

and I'm sure you know where you can find out how received his films have been. ;)

Ok, I just came back from the film.

I give it a solid 3/5 stars. I gotta tell ya, it was slightly better than I thought it would be (and I was expecting the worst). So, maybe my low expectations has altered my perceptions (but we've all seen how having high expectations can do the opposite).

Pros:
-Solid acting and a "real-life" directing style.
-Better script than Tyler Perry's other films.
-Interesting characters and clever dialogue.

Cons:
-The various spiritual messages are heavy-handed (preachy).
-The dramatic moments were occasionally over-the-top.
-Some classic cliches and stereotypes come through.

Not much of this movie is racially motivated except for a few scenes and characters, so again, don't feel like you won't be able to connect to the situations just because you're not dark-skinned. Everyone should be able to watch this film and get the same thing out of it.

I will warn you though, if you're not into religion, I'd pass up on it because like I said, one of its biggest downfalls is the heavy-handed Christian themes. There's a lot of crying in this movie after the first hour, too. A LOT of crying. The acting is all good (even the improvisations) and everything, but after a while, it just becomes too repetitive and it really hurts the movie in the long run. What saves this movie, again, is the solid acting, the humor, and the
"real-life" style.

So, even though I couldn't POSSIBLY give this movie less than a 6/10, I'm sure that some IMDb users will attempt burn it down to the Bottom 100.

So, if you go into this movie (which I'm sure 88% of you will NOT), go in with low expectations and just TRY to enjoy yourself.

But it seems evident that he's started branching away from that character. I assume she wasn't in Daddy's Little Girls, and it doesn't like like she's in Why Did I Get Married. If she were, that'd have been a major selling point in the marketing.

hey, i didnt know you were over here too,

whats up man?

Hmmm...I dunno, KenK. Perry's movies have never really had a very huge advertising game.

At least this movie has a semi-secret weapon with Janet Jackson in the mix, who was hit and miss in the movie in terms of acting, BTW, but she did okay. I just don't like her voice all too much.

With only 11 reviews, the movie has a 36% on rottentomatoes, which makes sense to me because I gave The Heartbreak Kid a 6.5/10 and it has 29%, so... O_o

So, based on rottentomatoes, as of right now, this is Tyler's best film so far, and I agree, but apparently, not many critics have been asked or even volunteered to actually watch the movie (shifts eyes suspiciously). So, maybe the score will fluctuate around during the next few days.

Perry movies are geared towards black woman, who are looking for any and every reason to bash black men. Which is whty i will never pay, therefore contribute any money, by paying to see his films. Hate what little i've seen of any of the other anyway.

Can't hate though. The male bashing market is untapped territory in Hollywood.:o

I won't be seeing this movie(well at least not in theaters) but it's cool to see a review that doesn't just write it off and call it a load just because it's a black movie. For that, props to you.

I don't think so. I think he doesn't like rich people. Their always the villians in his works.

lol. You talk as if you've actually SEEN this one. It covers both the male and female territories, dude. Give it a try.

and be different and actually be SEEN buying a ticket to see this movie. No one is going to look at you like you're weird or something. This is 2007!
