Universal Monsters

I believe that Alan Cumming bears a very strong resemblance to the pictures of Vlad Tsepes that have been painted - THOSE EYES!

Cumming is also a phenomenal suggestion.

A little bit of news that seems to have been missed yesterday. The guy who wrote Prisoners is writing The Wolfman.

Aaron Guzikowski is in negotiations to write the next installment in the “Friday the 13th” franchise for Paramount and Platinum Dunes, sources tell Variety.

Guzikowski’s thriller “Prisoners,” starring Hugh Jackman, garnered widespread critical acclaim after its release in 2013. He is currently attached to pen a remake of the Steve McQueen pic “Papillon” and is also penning the reboot of “The Wolf Man” for Universal.

Johnny Depp to star in ‘The Invisible Man’ at @UniversalPics http://ow.ly/Y91Qu

Johnny Depp has been set to star in The Invisible Man for Universal Pictures, part of the studio’s new production initiative to reestablish the classic movie monsters that is a cornerstone legacy for the studio.

That effort is being led by Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, who’ll produce. Universal’s first foray into the character was a 1933 adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel that starred Claude Rains as a scientist who finds a way to become invisible. The price is his sanity. The film was directed by James Whale, the immortal who also helmed Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, and it was produced by Carl Laemmle Jr, whose name, I’m pretty sure, is emblazoned on a building on the Universal lot. I could not get details on who is writing the script, or what the timing is on this picture. Kurtzman and Morgan have been hashing out the monsters universe in a writers room, but you cannot argue with the studio’s wisdom in putting those classic franchises on the slab and reanimating them.

This has been a big priority for Donna Langley, who has so far gotten going on two movies. They’ve managed a feat that Marvel Studios might envy: with Depp, they’ve now landed two of the biggest global stars in the world, after Tom Cruise was set to star in The Mummy, which Kurtzman will direct for June 9, 2017 release. The Invisible Man character is an intriguing choice with depth and franchise potential for Depp, who’s coming off a lauded performance as Whitey Bulger in Black Mass and who will next star in his other major franchises Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, coming in May, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Executive Vice President Jon Mone and Vice President Jay Polidoro will oversee production on behalf of Universal. Depp is represented by UTA and Bloom Hergott Diemer Rosenthal LaViolette Feldman Schenkman & Goodman.

Eh it's interesting but depends on which Depp we are getting.

That is a nice get. Just watch him slow burn psychotic.

No I am not a hater. I went from loving him to being completely indifferent. I'm a fan of the Invisible Man book and Claude Raines film but Depp in the lead role does not excite me.

Let me know when Depp gets out of his Jack Sparrow phase.

Even in his failed Oscar bait movie last year Depp made himself look cartoonish. I'm like can't he act without the hats and make-up anymore? He just bores me now.

Depp was far from the weak point of that film. The direction was the issue. If Scorsese had directed Black Mass instead of the "Scorsese wannabe" style it had, he'd have gotten his nomination with the exact same performance.

Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp together for the first time as The Mummy and The Invisible Man is worth all the effort Universal is putting into this. I'm 100% sold. I hope they get big names like Tim Burton or Guillermo Del Toro to direct some of these monsterverse films. And I hope they get big actors for Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Bride of Frankenstein, Phantom of the Opera, and Van Helsing.

Here are my picks:

The Mummy - Tom Cruise
Invisible Man - Johnny Depp
Van Helsing - Michael Keaton
Dracula - Paul Bettany
Wolfman - Guy Pearce
Frankenstein's Monster - Dave Bautista
Creature from the Black Lagoon - Andy Serkis
Bride of Frankenstein - Angelina Jolie
Phantom of the Opera - Tom Hiddleston

What happened to Tom Cruise and Van Helsing?

Well, now that we know about Invisible Man and The Mummy, what other characters are there?
Let me see... Dracula, The Werewolf, Frankenstein and his monster etc.
I wish we get as interesting and big names as Cruise and Depp.
What about Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio?

Do any of the horror characters suit them? Or will it be best to cast more half-known guys (but still talented), like Jason Isaacs, Jeremy Northam, David Wenham, Eric Bana?

Tom Cruise isn't Van Helsing that was different project and no tie in to this universe. He's apparently playing a Navy SEAL in The Mummy reboot.

This is the initial movies they're looking at so far.

The Mummy
Dracula (?)
Van Helsing
Invisible Man
Bride of Frankenstein
Wolfman

-Sofia Butella is The Mummy, Tom Cruise is playing a navy seal.
-Luke Evans is Dracula, they launched the monster universe with Dracula Untold.
-Johnny Depp is The Invisible Man
-Bride of Frankenstein: they're courting Angelina Jolie
-Van Helsing/The Wolfman: I think Hugh Jackman, Matt Damon, Mark Walberg, Vin Diesel are all top picks for the studio.
-Creature from the Black Lagoon- I remember reading that they wanted Scarlett Johansson.

Damon as Wolfman!!!

Then my own picks: Dicaprio for mad scientist Frankenstein and Brad Pitt for Van helsing
