Upcoming Movies You Just Aren't Looking Forward to...

I didn't like Dawn of the Dead and I haven't watched 300 in years. That one I loved at first but looking back on it it seems over done.

Even with Dawn of the Dead,300, and Watchmen - movies I like, each for different reasons - none of those movies indicate that Zack Snyder's a really good choice for a Superman movie. Not the kind of Superman movie I think most of us want to see anyway; we do need a villain who can pose more of a physical threat to our hero, an exciting action movie, and Snyder can surely give us that. But what about the heart? What about the optimism and adventure inherent in the Superman character and story? He made a good translation of the cynical deconstruction that is Watchmen, that anti-superhero movie superhero movie, but I know I don't want to see a Superman movie that feels like that, or like any of Snyder's other films. Snyder does not lack ambition, and hey, Richard Donner's pre-Superman films didn't scream, "This guy should be making the Superman movie," and look how well that movie turned out. So I'm really skeptical, but I'm not totally dismissing Snyder.

Would it make you feel better if I told you, in my opinion, Snyder's vision will be overwhelmed by Nolan's and Goyer's writing/ideas? Don't get me wrong, Goyer is far from exceptional, but he's a solid idea-man.

Snyder will still be directing and calling the shots but WB didn't send The Nolans to the franchise for minimal support. Zack has awesome visuals and his action scenes are top-tier (he's similar to Michael Bay) but he has his glaring flaws. I expect this collaboration to be identical to Bay's/Bruckhiemer's.

The Expendables 2 was one of my most anticipated for this year besides The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers, until the news it was PG-13 broke out I still have hope it might get changed to an R before the release, though.

I know what you mean about horror disappointments. I'm a fan of the genre myself and have felt distinctly uncatered for these past few years. But still, there's something about this one I think looks pretty cool... but I might be wrong!

In regards to The Expendables... meh. I wasnt terribly interested in the last one and Im just as nonplussed over this one. I remember hearing it described once as "The Sex and The City Movie for Middle-aged men" and I'm incliined to agree.

I sort of agree.

When I went to go see it in theaters, there was alot of 35-49 year olds in the crowd, and only a few teens and 20 year olds.

Sidenote: The last horror movie I truly enjoyed (and that startled me) was The Descent. Great horror flicks are so hard to come by nowadays.

Definitely, but the flick had so much potential. If only Stallone hadn't helped written the script, and directed, the film would have been so much more.

The sequel was looking to be an improvement over the original until the PG-13 rating was confirmed. Evidently Stallone and co. haven't learned their lesson from RoboCop 3 and Alien Vs. Predator, the mistake of taking a violent R-rated series and churning out a PG-13 sequel.

TBH I'm really not looking forward to Tim Burton's Dark Shadows. His shtick really just doesn't do it for me anymore, except when he's doing that whole 'retro horror/sci-fi' aesthetic he did for ed wood, sleepy hollow and mars attacks! and seems to be doing with Frankenweenie.

I agree with that. To me, Burton's a man that ran out of ideas a long time ago.
The last movie of his I really enjoyed was Sleepy Hollow... and that came out 12 years ago!

yeah, he really needs to do something different before he completely ruins his reputation. maybe he should take a crack at science fiction again, granted POTA sucked, but I'm thinking that was just a paycheck to him anyway, maybe if he actually put his heart and creativity into it a sci fi could be just what his career needs, either that or another drama like big fish or ed wood (ed wood is actually my favorite burton film).

Although not ideal casting, I love Cusack and I love Poe so I think it might just be crazy enough to work...

Indiana Jones 5 - Didn't think Crystal Skull was any good at all, it's like this franchise's version of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.

Die Hard 5 - Frankly, I wouldn't give any of the sequels more than a 7/10. The original Die Hard was the most awesome of them all, by far.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 - Same here, none of the sequels really do the first one justice, despite the hundreds of millions they spent on special effects and everything.

Transformers 4 - Wasn't Dark of the Moon always supposed to be the last one? And there's talk of rebooting the franchise already?

Resident Evil 5 & 6 - All of them have gotten 6.5/10 or less on IMDb. Does anyone honestly think they're that good?

I agree about Hunger Games too. The tv spots keep referring to it as "The Movie Event of The Year" and I'm like, 'Er... no, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit, Prometheus... ****, even The Amazing Spider-Man has more right to call itself that...'

You should watch Legend of the Guardians.

That film really helped me to understand that while Synder most definitely has a visual style that is recognisable (with way too much slo mo ), his movies aren't always cynical or gritty.

LOTG is exactly 'optimism and adventure'

I'm staying quietly and hopefully optimistic in regards to Man Of Steel.

On one hand, I really, REALLY want a great Superman movie but on the other I dislike Zach Snyder's movies, hate the new costume and felt vaguely sick when I saw the dark, moody and desaturated photo they released last year...

Still. We'll see.
