Van Halen to Tour Like It's 1984 by Natalie Finn
After a bumpy ride, Van Halen is finally jumping back out on the road. Just don't say the oft squabbling members are reuniting.
"This is not a reunion—this is a new band," original frontman David Lee Roth, rejoining the ranks for the first time in 22 years, proclaimed Monday at a press conference.
"I've done more rehearsal in the last four months than I've done in the past 20 summers," the high-kicking rocker said. "The whole sound is better than it has ever been...
"We decided to do everything you’d expect but make it high speed, low drag. Everything that got me fired from radio," he added, joking about his brief stint as Howard Stern's East Coast replacement after the shock jock left for satellite.
The recently minted Rock and Roll Hall of Famers kick off the North American leg of their comeback Sept. 27 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and will be touring in this hemisphere for the rest of the year, sticking largely to a set of greatest hits handpicked by Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang. The 16-year-old will be replacing the ousted Michael Anthony on bass. Eddie's brother, Alex Van Halen, will, as usual, wield the drumsticks.
"It's the s--t, that's all I can say," Eddie said, when asked how it feels to be "back together" with Roth, after the two had shared a hug for the cameras. "It's better than it's ever been."
Roth hasn't performed with Van Halen since the group hit the road in support of 1984, which went on to sell more than 10 million copies and earn, in recording industry lingo, Diamond Award status. Tensions flared, to put it mildly, and Roth left the group in 1985.
Apparently, all that's behind them now. Despite the fact that they're touring without their original bassist, that is.
"Michael Anthony is part of this band's history...Meet us in the future, not the pasture," Roth said of Anthony's absence. "I'm shocked that any of us are still vertical" after all these years. But as for the band's current sound, he said, "it's young, it's skinny and it's f--king amazing."
The revamped quartet had originally planned to start touring earlier this summer, but all was put on hold when Eddie Van Halen entered rehab in March to be treated for alcohol abuse. His decision to get clean coincided with the band's induction into the Hall of Fame, so with Alex Van Halen choosing to stay on the West Coast with his bro and Roth opting not to show because he wasn't going to be able to sing, only Anthony and lead vocalist number two, Sammy Hagar, were on hand in New York to accept the honor.
Asked if sobriety had affected his guitar playing, Eddie said, "It's always changing…All I know is I'm playing my ass off."
Tickets for the upcoming tour go on sale Aug. 18.

The long-standing rumor of this finally came true. Personally, I think they suck ass for leaving Anthony out of the mix even though he's probably one of the most remedial bassists in all of rock and roll history. I'll be interesting to see if they can still make their magic happen after so many years.

If they were coming near here I'd see em again. Eddie was orgasmic the first time I saw him...

Yeah I'm pissed at what they did to Anthony, but man I still want to see them. Is that wrong?

Hmmm, I'm not sure about going to see them.
I guess everyone has been keeping on schedule with their meds.

I saw them on the 1984 tour. Not sure I want to have that blissful experience tainted by what potentially could be lackluster in comparison.

I hope they stay together and complete the tour. These guys got into a fight presenting an award. I hope they worked out their reality show **** during rehearsals. I can't wait to see this. Doing anything this weekend Wolfgang? Aww man, I gotta go work for my dad!

I respect what The Van Halen bro. did for rock, but they have treated their front men like sh**. As far as I am concerned they can lick my taint.

I've seen both versions in the 80's so I'm glad I don't have to pay money to see 3 guys who haven't cared about ROCK -N- ROLL in a decade. That's OK, 'cause when a band starts caring more about their careers, ROCK-N-ROLL stops caring about them.... (can't sell an album.... ARE YA LISTENING, METALLICA?)

I'd pay to see Sammy play any time. He's all about the fans instead of expecting it to be the other way around, like Eddie does.

Mike is probably happy, too. He's masochistic enough to down a fifth of JD, but not to tour with Roth... makes sense.

David Lee Roth is so ****ing annoying but still I'm happy they're finally getting back together.

Yeah, this is exactly what I was thinking when I made the thread annoucing Wolfie's addition to the band in the first place.

didnt this 'news'' break days ago?

and good luck getting to date 50. hell good luck getting to date 20. eddie is what i call.. crazy.

What a low blow. :(

I know. Especially since Wolfie kind of a chub. :o

And Ahab, they've been talking about this as a rumor for awhile. The official announcement from the band came today.

I loathe Van Halen, their sound is just so annoying

They've been talking about doing this for months. They wanted to do it earlier this year but Ed went into rehab and killed that ideal.

I loved VH when Sammy was with them but they lost me with VH3. I can't stand Dave and them leaving Mike out is just dumb.:whatever:

yeah at this point they need to put VH out of it's misery, They had a great thing with DL Roth and then had some mild success with Hagar, but now they're just embarrassing themselves. As much as I enjoy Eddie's guitar playing the guy from all accounts is an ******* and is impossible to get along with. He's pissed off everyone in that band he's not related to. They've just become a running soap opera, and havent done anything relevant in years. I cant think of a VH album I've bought since For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge and that was like 1991

EDIT: I bought Balance in 1995 which pretty much sucked arse

I was lucky to see the final show of the last tour, and I have to say, Anthony made the show with his love of Jack Daniels and kickass solo, so I'll pass on this one. When Eddie's son came out, it was the low point of the show. :down

Is it just me or is Wolfie a bit of a charisma vacuum? Everything I've ever seen about the kid on TV or in photos just screams "boring" to me. He seems like a nice kid and all, but he just does not give off that rock star vibe whatsoever. If he's really as talented as his dad says he is, why isn't he putting together his own band and starting a new chapter in the Van Halen family legacy instead of rehashing remedial bass parts with a bunch of over-50 guys?

isnt he classically trained? I thought I read somewhere that he was put into special music schools or something. That would make sense because he would've never developed that "edge" or desire to rock nor would he know the failures you experience along the way, his Dad probably put him up to playing. Kid probably wants to be a dentist or something :D

Yeah, I get a bit of that "Son, you're going to be a rock star and you're going to like it!" kind of vibe out of the whole thing, to be honest.

Exactly what I've been saying. Exactly why I'm pissed about Mike not being there. Exactly why I think Eddie basically fired Mike in the first place.

For Led Zeppelin, I know Plant used Bonham's son for an 88 Concert but didn't Plant also go on to say when people asked why don't you reunite and tour using Bonham's son and essentially say he's not as good?

That just makes me think of Wolfgang replacing Anthony.

only Bonham was dead and they had no choice, whereas Anthony isnt there solely because Eddie is a strap

I was talking in terms of talent.
