Video Game Bashing

1) I thought that if a person cannot distinguish fantasy from reality they are mentally ill, and mental illness is the real problem.

2) I thought the ESRB did a fine job at keeping violent video games out of the hands of kids and providing guidelines for retailers and parents. From there I thought it was the parents job to limit what their children are exposed to.

3) I thought statistics contradict the idea that violent video games cause violence.

4) I thought there was no conclusive research done to substantiate the fact that video games cause violence.

5) I thought there have been studies conducted that actually prove video games can relieve stress.

Am I wrong in any of my thoughts? I would like to hear the opinions of people who believe video games cause violence.

It's not the game, tv, or movie, it's the person. If they were already ****ed up, the entertainment was just an excuse or catalyst that just amplified what was there.

The idiots on the television tell me they do.

Truth be told, there probably is a connection between violent people and violent video games. Namely, violent people like violence, and therefore buy violent video games.

But that's very different from normal people buying violent video games, and said games turning them violent.

If these sociopaths didn't have video games, they would be outside torturing small animals. That's what sociopaths did before violent video games.

Nonsense, no one killed anyone before the invention of video games.

I'm pretty sure I can conclusively tie Spacewar! to the Vietnam war.

You have to consider that there are parents who will buy their children a game, regardless of the rating. I don't think this causes violence, but it could contribute to the sort of desensitization that leads to violence.

tl;dr: its not the games, its the people playing them and the people buying them for an underage audience.

I've been playing video games since I was a kid and not once did I ever get into a fight, not even a shoving match. So no, video games do not cause violence.

No, people just want excuses. Crazy people are just crazy.

I thinking playing video games curb violence, but I some negative gaming cultures can encourage violence.

I find it crazy how the biggest people in our country like the NRA and numerous Republicans believe this.

People just don't want to admit that some kids are just ****ed up or don't want to admit that they or others are bad parents.

Keep the people ignorant and afraid!

Playing Atari as a kid made me very violent.

I think it does vary. The games with the more realistic violence I don't think are appropriate for some, from younger to older because I think there are some people that just can't disassociate real life from fiction or even start to become inspired for some inane reason. Stuff like Halo, I think a 14 year old could probably handle because it's way too stylized.
