As a New Yorker...I can tell you that for a stranger to say a single word to you on the streets...it is ****ing weird. I think I can't stress that enough. It's such a strange thing for someone you don't know to say anything to you while you're walking. New Yorkers don't say "hello" like this is a sitcom show, this city isn't like that. This is a city where people pretty much mind their own business because everyone is going from their own point A to B. People barely even make eye contact in this city with strangers, much less just try and talk to someone they don't know. To me, as a New Yorker, it would be really weird to have someone just say "hello" to me. I feel like alot of people who aren't from New York might not get that.
So, a stranger on the streets of New York saying "hello" to you is weird enough. But, a stranger complimenting you, even in a comedian-type manner like "Goddamn!", that's insane to me. I would think that this person is crazy.
Now, 180 people in a day? In New York? I'm kinda amazed by it.
And, they weren't all saying "hello". One dude just yelled "SMILE! SMILE" like a ****ing psycho. Another followed her around for five minutes without saying a word (which would have prompted me to confront him with violence or a threat). Another guy yelled that she needs to "say thank you" because of his compliments, all because she did the right thing and did not engage.
I was a little more amazed by hearing that this is the norm for most women in New York. This is a weird city, with a lot of crazy people. I'd say this is a great PSA for any woman who might consider moving to New York and is uncomfortable with what she saw.
Also, carrying a weapon would be a great idea too.
