Villains who haven't appeared in a while or have not done anything of note recently

I loved seeing the Wrecking Crew in Omega Flight but other than that they have sucked recently. That and the U-Foes, I have always loved these guys and don't think they have ever been used to their potential.
I still love the Wrecking Crew. I don't mind that they always get their asses kicked. That's kind of what they're there for. Someone's gotta be the solid, unambitious bank-robbing supervillains who constantly fail, and the Wrecking Crew do it well.

The problem is if the Wrecking Crew always fail no matter who they battle, then they lose any sort of drama or suspense. We're at the point where May Parker with a mop could defeat them. Them being tougher in OMEGA FLIGHT was cool, but we need to see some better showings for them. In SIEGE: YOUNG AVENGERS, they nearly ripped Hulkling a new one before Wiccan zapped them. Maybe they need to take on lower powered heroes. All of the Crew have Class 10 strength, and only two have "enchanted" weapons (Wrecker and Thunderball). That's way too weak to really challenge Thor unless they have surprise, or the Odinson's having an off day. On the other hand, they could be a fair challenge to Spider-Man (especially without his spider-sense currently), or some of the younger teams, or even Daredevil. The thing is they can lose so long as it's a fair challenge, but when they go down in a 5 page intro, they look like jobbers. The same can be said for Rhino or Mr. Hyde.

I never did think enough was done with Piledriver's son, besides his appearance in the first relaunch of RUNAWAYS. Sure, Molly broke his "enchanted" shovel, but it could have reformed. One would think he could be a fun member of the Young Masters or the Bastards Of Evil or something.

I may as well use this chance to note that what Bendis did to Morrison's Noh-Varr is a travesty. Here was a character who was set up to be an amusing foil for the Fantastic Four or space heroes; a Kree from another dimension (not "our" Kree) intent on taking over the world with his wonky powers and arrogance. Instead, Bendis decided to make him a legacy of Mar-Vell in spirit despite having nothing to do with him, and made him into the very generic hero Protector.

When did they drop down to class 10 strength? I thought they all had like class 50, except the Wrecker, who was even stronger.

Most Marvel Handbooks that actually say what Wrecker's strength level is, either recently or in the past, state it at around 40-50 tons. When he has the rest of the Crew with him, this is split evenly. Thus, they'd only be able to lift 10-12.5 tons each as the Crew, but alone, Wrecker would be stronger. That was actually why it made sense once when Bendis had most of the then New Avengers (Spidey, Wolverine, Cage, and Spider-Woman/Veranke) fight Wrecker and have a hard time of it because he was alone and thus at full strength (as in able to overpower even Luke Cage easily).

In RUNAWAYS (vol. 2) #1 when Piledriver's son is with them, Wrecker even gripes that splitting his power 5 ways instead of 4 makes them all weaker and is a pain.

Supposedly, Wrecker gained training from Ulik regarding retaining his full strength while empowering the Crew, but this wouldn't make the Crew themselves any stronger. So even if Wrecker can always lift 40-50 tons with or without the Crew, they (Bulldozer, Piledriver, and Thunderball) all can only lift about 10-12 tons each. Which against Thor isn't worth much, since all standard Asgardian males can supposedly lift about 30 tons. So when the Wrecking Crew attack Thor, it's akin to fighting one really strong Asgardian demigod and his three kids. His crowbar has some magical mojo, but, again, nothing that should really challenge Thor these days unless he's off his game.

This doesn't mean the Wrecking Crew can't be formidable opponents; writers just need to choose them better and make a better show of it. I can imagine the new Thunderstrike (Kevin Masterson) and "Grunny" having trouble putting them away. Hell, even the Rhino managed to defeat Kevin in his first power outing, and the Rhino hasn't won a fight since I've been alive.

Of course, what Handbooks state and what is often written is often different. For a long time Colossus could only lift about 70 tons and that's increased these days. For a long time Thing could lift 85 tons and that's been boosted (finally) as well. Supposedly, Luke Cage can lift 30 tons, but I've seen him man-handle the vastly stronger Orca in the 90's H4H, so he's usually written as stronger (unless it's just when he gets mad). Heck, Handbooks STILL claim Wolverine is 5' 3'', yet not a single Marvel artist since 1980 has drawn him any shorter than about 5' 7'' or 5' 8'' at best, especially not within the past 20 years.

It's a difficult thing, being a B-List "grunt" villain. The masterminds and the psychos get the most attention, which leaves others like Rhino or the Wrecking Crew to just be pawns or named henchmen. Still, I do think some attempt can be made to show how dangerous some of them can be even if they're only there to provide a Bond-intro action sequence for a story.

People said the same thing about Mysterio before Gaurdian Devil come along - Spot just needs a writer who cares.

The Spot will be appearing in the relaunch of DAREDEVIL #1, by Mark Waid and Marcos Martin. I imagine Martin will have a field day artistically with him.

The Spot I see as one of quite a few villains who has a power that is so potent, that the only way the writer could figure out a way to have him lose was to make the villain either a putz or a moron. Otherwise, it might take more effort figuring out how the hero would win, and writers have deadlines too, after all. Hydro-Man falls in similar categories; his power could be incredibly destructive, but because he's a moron he can usually be thwarted with cement or sand or whatever. Sandman is the same way.

Did you read Guardian Devil? He was a putz in that. He couldn't beat Spider-Man, so he went after DD, and still lost. Even ripped off Kraven's last Hunt, only he went or more b***h like.

He didnt go after Spidey because Spidey wasnt around (Clone Saga). He screwed DD over pretty damn well in the book...and the point WAS to loose. He wanted to die. It was DD's verbal beating that basically brought his failed life into context - hence the suicide. 'Ripping off Kraven' as Beck mentioned was the irony of the whole situation.

Gaurdian Devil did leaps and bounds for a character that had been basically 'left for dead' by the writers for years. I look forward to the reveal of who exactly the current Mysterio is - he's been coy about if he IS Beck back from the dead or not...perhaps Berkhart?

Either way, I would just love to see Spot get his due.

I shouldn't have used the term "sucked" I still get excited when I see the wrecking crew in a comic, I just which they could catch a break. Your right though I so like seeing some guys that don't have any huge grand schemes they just want money.
