Really? Whedon actually said that? I thought it was only reporters that reported/speculated on War Machine's role. Do you have a link to Whedon's quote?

Whedon never said that. I think it might have been one of the early sites but right after Don Cheadle spilled that he was in the movie I do remember at least one or two sites saying he had a "key" role. Which to me sounds like misinformation or speculation masked as fact.

I always assumed the IP suit in IM3 was the War Machine Mark II armour repainted. I wouldn't be mad if Rhodey uses that but the War Machine Mark I was better imo. This one is just more sleeker but it doesn't scream 'War Machine' to me. Now this on the other hand looks badass..

The War Machine Mark 1 is the best of the two. But I highly doubt that we won't see any other new design for him. Maybe they will make him look more as Mark 1 than Mark 2. An IronBull.

War Machine Mark 2, looks more like a public friendly design. More like Iron Man, less like a bipedal tank. With Ultron on the loose, he'll hopefully again install every piece of weaponry he can find.

I agree with you guys. The Iron Patriot design is cool, but I like the rough and grungy look of the original War Machine armor from IM2. I just hope the armor in Avengers 2 will have the traditional minigun/gatling gun with missile pods on both shoulders.

I loved IM3, but my being underwhelmed by IM2 had nothing to do with War Machine. He was fine, and has earned inclusion in the Avengers, imo.

I can't be the only one who wasn't blown away by Iron Man 2 and IM3.

I mean none of them blew me away, but all of them had great moments. Iron Man and War Machine, to me, is one of the most fulfilling and awesome action scenes in the MCU. I had precisely one third of the feeling I got years later when the Avengers circled up. It's like 'okay, we fought a couple times, we settled our differences, we're on the same page, we're friends, now lets lay the smack down' and then they do. It was a really good moment, that paid off the subplot in the film that was actually handled well, and the actors nailed the banter. The movie could have been tons better... that scene, not really. Maybe a little bit. Maybe.

And while his role in IM3 was largely supportive, he was still funny during the restaurant discussion and in the final battle.

I get the feeling that Tony brings in Rhodey to augment the team a bit since he's probably not on full-time duty after his promise to Pepper. Also, with Ultron able to hack computers, I think we may see him take over some suits, maybe even Rhodey's WM/IP suit, and mess with the team. The Mk43 armor will likely be a suit Stark creates to combat Ultron's hacking prowess by having some type of computer that functions like JARVIS but in a more closed off, secure manner.

Im pretty sure they said IRON PATRIOT armor was spotted on set at Avengers Academy/School whatever. They didnt mention War Machine. Also it would make sense since Avengers/Cap is a red/white/blue color scheme.
