Infinity War War Machine/Rhodey... Like or Don't Like?

I think it was the character itself. Cheadle and Howard are comparable in measures of clout...it's just that War Machine is significantly less interesting to the general audience in comparison to Iron Man.

Fury, Widow, Hawkeye and Falcon are in the same boat. Great supporting characters but you wouldn't get the attention of the general audience without major support from other characters (which is why my pitch, even in my dreams, would definitely include Iron Man and another Avenger at the very least.)

Yeah, they've been designed from the word go as supporting characters.

For me, Cheadle is too good for simply a supporting role. Hasn't really had a scene to shine. Though he did very well in the airport scenes.

And I think someone posted that he was filming the sequel so perhaps he does make it through Infinity War, which is good for me. :woot:

In a film like this nearly everyone will have a supporting role. Even if you are the world's no.1 actor you're gonna struggle to get a starring role unless you're cast as Iron Man or Cap. Otherwise it negatively impacts the film like J Law does in X-films because she hasn't been cast as a leading character but they are artificially giving that character a leading role just because she's playing that character.

For Cheadle to have a lead role, we would have had to have a War Machine film instead of someone else. My vote would have been Iron Man 3 in that situation.

I've been puzzled by predictions that he would die during Infinity War. It would just be odd to me if he has a "death scene" in both Civil War and the immediate followup.

He's already filming Avengers 4 anyway.

Unless that was the whole intent to fool us.

I'm pretty sure to bet on him dying in IW. I just hope it's memorable rather than a simple shock.

I wish they would have beefed up his role in Iron Man 3. A War Machine could have been possible or a bigger role for him in the Avengers if he was written in a particular way. Make audiences attract to him.

People said the exact same thing about Civil War, lol. When it was (correctly) pointed out that Rhodey probably wasn't gonna die because Marvel wouldn't spoil their big death in a trailer, people said maybe it was a double fakeout to lull viewers into a false sense of security.

They could have a scene in IW where Vision zaps him by accident in mid-air and then he hurtles to the ground with IM and Falcon trying to get to him in time but failing. And then Stark blasts Falcon away in anger. This scene could also be repeated in Avengers 4. :yay:

well we know he'll definitely be in Wakanda with the rest of the Gang. So no hard feelings and all.

I just hope we get a scene mentioning his recovery.

Clearly Rhodey dying would have worked better for some of you, but for me, I didn't care about him until they let him live.

Until this point, I have expected side characters like him to die for whatever plot moment the writers need. That's how these sort of characters have been treated in superhero films traditionally. But Rhodey surviving showed me that the writers don't consider any character expendable. That really added to the weight of previous character deaths like Coulson and totally changed how I viewed Rhodey on a rewatch of Iron Man 2. So for me, it was a great choice to have him survive.
While I often disagree with Neal, I must admit that letting Rhodes live was a great choice

I love Cheadle but I'd be far, far more interested in the character if Terrence Howard was still portraying him.

Rhodes certainly added something to that final trailer shot. :hmr:

Pretty cool that War Machine will be helping out separately at Wakanda while Iron Man is elsewhere,

It will be interesting to see if Rhodey is still a paraplegic by then or if he will have the use of his legs back

How so?

It wouldnt change any of the material for the character so what would be the difference for you?

We've never really seen WM go all out.

I hope we get to see it this time.

He was playing nice in CW.

Exactly. I did like the part where Ant Man swung that truck at him and he used his firepower to totally destroy it before it reached him. Hopefully we get longer scenes with feats like that incorporated with some good flying moves.

I personally wouldn't be fussed if any of widow, rhodey, vision, get the can.
