Infinity War War Machine/Rhodey... Like or Don't Like?

They really didn't make him a BADASS yet in the way that literally everyone else has had.

I'm really hoping Infinity War delivers him something. Like I enjoyed him in Civil War despite him coming off so roughly toward those who were anti-Accords.

I really don't care about Don Cheadle's character in the films and I don't care for Don Cheadle in the role. He's not the Rhodey I'm familiar with. He doesn't have that take charge persona. He's just Downey's upstaged buddy. He doesn't do much for me.

Initially i disliked the switch to Cheadle, from Howard, but after IM 2-3, and seeing him in avengers 2, he as WM grew on me..

Cheadle has definitely brought a calm life to the role. But I can see why people would say his version of the character didn't stick. He's charismatic sure but he doesn't have the feel of Rhodey. I feel like Howard and Cheadle both didn't quite nail the role. the only reason people have come to accept Cheadle is because he's still playing the character. If they kill him off no one would bat an eye. I certainly wouldn't.

If Stark dies in A3 or A4, you can expect Rhodes to fill in - at least for a little bit as the man in the iron suit, so if RDJ is out, Cheadle has an opening.

I agree, War Machine is such a badass character, Cheadle simply doesn’t suit the role physically or characteristically, IMO Idris Elba would’ve been a better fit in that role.

I think Cheadle fits the role better than Howard did. I like Cheadle as Rhodey.

I liked Howard but I like Cheadle too. I'm kind of glad we got both.

Cheadle is good. But he needs to pump some iron. Or he should have.

Also, they should have done more for his character to be more than a sidekick. Play up his military service.

The character is...fine. I forget he exists literally the second he’s out of my direct line of sight.

And I’ll say this: Howard was a better Rhodey, but Cheadle is a better War Machine.

Not sure that's a fair comparison, as Howard never got the chance to suit up as WM (although I do have a hard time seeing his face up close or hearing that voice from inside the suit :D).

I don't buy either one as Rhodey per se, but I did buy into the notion that Howard and Downey could've been longtime friends more than RDJ and Cheadle.

Idris Elba, or even Blair Underwood, would've KILLED it.

That's been one of my biggest nitpicks as well. Cheadle is just too much of a pencil neck to be believable as Rhodey. When he's inside the suit? Sure.....he's War Machine.

Maybe if they had more scenes of him kicking butt outside of the armor. Or maybe yelling at his subordinates. Or something detailing of his military career or what life he has when he's outside of the uniform.

I'm not sure if they cared at all or maybe WM really is just a sidekick.

There were a few scenes (IIRC) in Ironman 3 which displayed him (out of suit) taking on some muscle at Trevor's place.

Howard imo was alot more believable than Cheadle. Howard had more of an intimidating presence to him, where you could believe that he has had extensive military service. Whereas Cheadle just comes off as a sarcastic friend of Starks.

Also, he should have been in the first Avengers. Even if it was a cameo.

It would have been cool if he flew to in to save Tony after he fell out of the wormhole, but Hulk saving him works better anyway. According to the official canon, Rhodey was on a mission during the events of The Avengers anyway, but he got there in just in time to see them eating shawarma.

A wasted opportunity. They really seem to treat WM like the black sheep of the Avengers family. Even Falcon seemed to join and get a major seat at the table right off the bat.

That's true, Falcon we saw get imo MORE air time in TWS, than we saw Rhodie get in IM2.

Idk when the last time you guys saw Iron Man but Howard was a dick the whole movie. Very annoying Rhodes

^THIS. Though I wish we got more of Falcon in Age of Ultron, his cameo in Ant-Man def seemed to add to his appeal. His dialogue and action in CW confirmed him as a legit Avenger.

WM still seems to be waiting on such moments.

In fairness, there was a lot more room in the story for Falcon in TWS than there was for Rhodey in IM2 with all the plotlines that movie had going on. Rhodey had more of an unexcused absence in IM3. I feel like he was gone for the first two acts of that movie. At least he got to jump into action with the team at the end of AOU.

Billed 7th. Not too shabby considering I'm sure he probably has less screentime than he did in Civil War.
